We arrived in Melbourne after a 12 hour coach journey to rain and cold...something we are not accustomed too! We previously had decided that as we were going to be in Melbourne for around 3 weeks we would ditch the hostels and find ourselves a flat...which was more stressful than we thought!! After hours of searching on the internet for flats, we managed to get 2 flat viewings so we headed to the first with great optimissum with no sleep! The optimissum soon disappeared! What can only be described as an unwashed tramp answered the door to the flat which stunk of the 18 year old cat which lived there! After a few minutes of making small talk (while holding our breath) and been asked if we were ok with the weed addiction we made our ... read more

So its been quite a while since we've wrote and we've been very busy! Our train journey down to Da Nang was long, cold and not very comfy at all but as soon as we were there we made it easily to nearby Hoi An (although our taxi driver stopped at marble mountains on the way and we refused to get out the car) and found a cheap little hostel for 8 us dollars a room... however we were out on the roof in a little shack and the bathroom was 6 floors down, not great when you wake up needing the loo in the middle of the night! We wandered the old town, which is all lit up at night, with music playing and little shops and resturants all along the river and had dresses ... read more

Ellie and I are leaving Melbourne on Saturday and are really looking forward to traveling around New Zealand for three weeks. We fly into Auckland, pick up our Jucy campervan from there (see the van we will be traveling around in here: http://www.jucy.co.nz/vehicles/Jucy-Crib.aspx) and will be staying in Orewa (about an hour north of Auckland) for a couple of nights with my Great Aunt and her husband. From there, we will trying to cover as much ground as possible/seeing as much as possible and will probably split our three weeks evenly between the North and South Island. Plan-wise (roughly), we will traveling from Orewa up to the Bay of Islands (extremely striking scenic area with a few historic towns to visit), down to Roturua a.k.a. 'Sulphur City' (where there are lots of natural geothermal spas and ... read more

With the success of yesterday’s walk, we decided to keep up with the healthy approach and walk to the St Kilda Festival, which is just less than 8km from the flat and took us nearly 1.5 hours along Chapel St. We arrived to a sea of kids in skinny jeans and quirky hats, as well as what seemed to be an endless number of food stalls selling a huge range of international cuisine. With the long walk behind us we needed some energy, so we grabbed a couple of Souvalki’s which were pretty damn tasty! After walking around we watched a couple of bands on the main stage, one of which was a girl rock band called Stonefield, which the MC informed us had played Glastonbury and supported Foo Fighters, which was all quite impressive given ... read more

Again been solo busy On Wednesday and Thursday we ventured off to a little town called ballarat where Australia made many rich millionaires through gold panning. Chlo and I tried our hand at it but only found a few small flecks which we were later told had been put in the river to give people a sense of achievement haha never mind a few gold flecks richer none the less :) The evening before we had been to see a sound and light show of the story of how ballarat became to be ballarat as you might guess it all began with a drunk Irish man in a pub ha and the story was quite interesting on how Australia came to have democracy, pretty brutal but Australia wouldn have been the country it is today without ... read more

After Christmas, I had been in Auckland a whole two weeks, so obviously it was time for a break. Luckily I had Kirsty coming over to visit from Australia for her first ever trip to NZ. After chatting to her so much and not seeing her since June last year, it was great to finally see her again. We started off with a bit of a tiki tour of Auckland, but unfortunately the weather didn't play its part and she didn't get the best view of what can be a truly beautiful city when it wants to be. After New Years, I had planned a road trip for us and we headed down country - thankfully in much better weather, and had our first stop in Thames. We wandered the town but generally kept it fairly ... read more

There's no room at the inn in my hostel tonight so I'm having to head down to St Kilda, one of Melbourne's beach locations, tonight. St Kilda has a dodgy past - prostitution and drugs mainly - but in recent years has cleaned up its act without losing some of the edge that made it the place it is. My hostel down there is not great. I've come to realise that Base hostels are just for kids - anyone over 21 should avoid at all costs. My room is tiny, with what appears to be very dirty carpets. Bathroom is clean however so at least that's a good thing. There's a bar downstairs that sells overpriced beer and that no doubt will still be pumping music up into my dorm until the wee small hours. At ... read more

Firstly, Happy New Year to you all! Ellie and I hope that you had a lovely relaxing Festive break and we wish you all the best for 2012. So, it's not long now until we are back in the UK (under three months) and time is flying past extremely fast as usual. We are still in Melbourne and still working hard but have had Ellie's mum, Judith, visiting us for the last 3 weeks or so. We have had a thoroughly enjoyable time with her and seen some spectacular things, however, it is actually her last day in Australia today and we will be sad to see her go back home. Judith arrived in Melbourne on the 19th December and has been staying near us in St Kilda for the last couple of weeks. She has ... read more
