13-19 April 2011 We arrived at The Grampian National Park to find that 80% of the park was closed due to widespread flooding and landslides back in January this year. This was a little disappointing but didn't put a downer on our time there at all. The Grampians is something else! Such a special national park - if only these walls could talk! We did a lovely walk to a waterfall where we stopped for a picnic, lots of 4WDriving where we stumbled on some interesting wildlife including emus and saw some sacred Aboriginal Rock Art. The bush camping at Plantation Campground was awesome (gotta love Alex's damper..) The troopy nearly got taken out by a wild deer at one point too which was interesting. Leaving the Grampians we back-tracked to Melbourne where we stayed with ... read more

I woke up pretty early to get out to Collins Street in Melbourne to pick up the tourwhich would take me to the Grampians national park and then on to the Great Ocean Road and then on back to Melbourne. We travelled out to the Grampians and the weather was great, the people on the bus were a varied lot I clicked pretty well with this Dutch guy called Basch and was chatting to him for most of the trip. We had a couple of hikes through the Grampians, both of them were great but one in particular was amazing. You can see on the photos attached to this post. There were guys practicing free climbing and we stopped and watched them for a while. Pretty impressive stuff. After this hike I swapped over to another ... read more

The next day we set off with the intention of heading towards the Grampians National Park in order to do some hiking. Luckily, along thew way we were able to spot a few more of the well known rock formations including the grotto, probably my favourite, the Arch and London Bridge, now partly collapsed so that it no longer resembles the London Bridge. We then headed straight for the Grampians. Unfortunately there had been some quite extensive flooding in the area during January. Whilst the area was now safe, as a result of the flooding some of the roads were closed. This meant that we had to take a detour along the way in order to reach Halls Gap. It was whilst we were taking one of these detours that someone, who shall remain nameless, managed ... read more

Victoria, Australia Jan. 25th Left Southern Australia today and are just across the border in Victoria. We are continuing to follow the coast line as the interior is still flooding. We keep hearing reports of different areas so are following the floods pretty closely. All is still well where we are though. We have finally seen more alive kangaroos than dead ones. Saw a herd of them in Portland, on the coast. They were in a city park area which is part of the grounds of the Portland Aluminum Company. Yup, we found a smelter in this part of the world. However, other than just seeing it, like at home, there are no longer any tours available. This one makes strictly tri-lock ingots. We are spending the night in Warrnambool and then heading for the Great ... read more

Just back in Melbourne after 4 days in the Grampians about 200 miles north west of Melbourne Climbed to the Pinnacle and went to the Aboriginal rock drawings Had a great trip to Sovereign Hill Gold Mine with a trip 60 feet underground into the original mine workings. Very interesting as well as a nice bit of respite from the 32'C on the surface Our last day with Claire tomorrow before we say goodbye until May next year when she comes back to UK for Matthew's wedding. She's got her flight booked and got a good price with Qatar although it's still a lot more to buy a flight from OZ to Uk rather than the other way We are spending the last evening at the night time market at Victoria Markets. They only started last ... read more

Hi Friends and Family We are now on the Great Ocean Rd staying at Princetown, part of the Port Campbell National park. It is a magical place and what can I say fantastic for the mind, body and soul. I dare say we will spend a few days here and then head to Otway National Park (still located along the Great Ocean Rd). We have spent time in the Grampians Nat Park (Gariwerd is the Aboriginal name) and did some kick ass walks, longest one taking 4.5 hrs with a 400mtre ascent. Man our calves were not in the best shape for the next few days. Q Man was walking around like an old man for a few days and I must say I was too (not an old man an old woman)! It was all ... read more

Ahoy there me hearties ….we greet you this time from the Glenelg Highway in Western Victoria where we are making our way towards Mount Gambier on the SA coast. We’ve had a couple of comments from people having to guess where our path will take us next and over the past 3 weeks, our route has kept even us guessing! Our route and timing has been largely determined by the weather and one thing is for sure, we will certainly remember Victoria for its cold wind and rain. I’m told Summer is well and truly on the way in Brisbane with 30 deg temps … down here we’ve barely made it into the teens for most days. The very faint tans that we acquired in outback QLD have long since disappeared. Despite the weather, this little ... read more

Warning this blog entry contains lots of Kangaroos!!!! Our drive from Melbourne to the Grampians took around 4 hours and credit to Jody who did an excellent job of getting us there safe - considering we all had a few drink the night before! We had pre booked a log cabin in a place called Halls Gap which is a village perched in a valley surrounded by huge mountains and vast green landscape. It's quite remote and only a handful people live here, most tourists come for a weekend break and the place has lots of holiday homes and log cabins scattered about. Our cabin was classy. We had a living room with sofa, tv and a gas fire (our saving grace!), two bedrooms with ELECTRIC BLANKETS, a kitchen and a bathroom. The bathroom was a ... read more
