Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Panoramic View: Bay Of Islands, Great Ocean Road More Climbing & The Great Ocean Road Coast Despite the late night of fun and games, we were all up bright eyed and bushy tailed at 6.30am for another action packed day ahead. What better a way to cure a hangover than climb the Pinnacles, well thats what Dave our tour guide assured us. He couldn't have been far from the truth, and to be honest I think he was talking from experience. The climb to the top was around an hour, some of which required some careful planning and precision as I [View Full Entry]

Panoramic View: Grampians From Atop Mount Hollow Back On The Road With a day break, we were back to our travelling antics and were picked up early by our new driver to take us out of Adelaide. The new driver's name was Dave, and he conclusively proved to be the best guide we were to have in our time in Australia. He really knew his stuff but was also very funny and put some great tunes on to boot. It's a fact that a good guide can make a trip as this was probably the most fun we'd had here. Another chapter, another adventure, this time in the shape of my very own "Australian Road Trip". And a road trip here is like no other. Being the largest Island in the world and largely developed since the invention of the automobile roads here are BIG, very smooth and for the most part completely empty! So that means endless hours of nothing but yourself and the ipod for company. Good job I rather like Hannah! So I finally made it out of Sydney and headed West through the Blue Mountains National Park, before being spat out on the other side into what [View Full Entry]

a lot of roads were never-ending!
Drove 2800km in 9 days with Mark from Adelaide to Sydney through mountains, towns, ghost villages, outback, rainforest, beaches, snow-capped mountains etc etc....!!! Went to the Grampians mountains National Park, one night in Melbourne at his brother's house, Wilson's Promontory National Park, Snowy Mountains (which had early snow on the top!), half a day in Canberra, then a few places along the coast up to Sydney. Had a really good week although it was pretty cold a lot of the time until we got to the coast, saw so much though, kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, emus, possums, no koalas though : [View Full Entry]

Stayed in the Grampians for 2 nights, getting use for the cold weather. The 2 nights stay revolved around watching the champions league semi finals, getting up at 4.30am in the morning. Walked through the National park to some great look outs. [View Full Entry]

Once we deceided we were done with Warrnambool and were definetly not ready to work yet we needed some adventure so we got out the Lonely planet. Just a bit away was The Grampians, mountain area, no beaches. This was our first big camping adventure. What a night! The drive was great the scenery was a nice change from the coast more of a rugged/desert look. We went to the over populated Halls Gap with 300 people within the grampians to camp. Apparently we picked the best time to visit because at the same time these wonderful huge green cricket looking [View Full Entry]

All the roos

After breakfast we departed first of all for a walk in part of the rain forest called Maits Rest, a lovely 30 minute stroll through cool temperate rain forest - myrtle beech, tree ferns lots of birds and carnivorous black snails the latter sadly we did not manage to see! We then drove down to the Otway light station looking out all the way down the 12 k road for koala’s, which we were assured we would see but did’nt. We parked and hiked 500 m to the loo’s and lo and behold there were a couple of koala’s asleep very [View Full Entry]

A walk through the Grampians National Park
We left the Great Ocean Road and moved further inland. Travelling through brown barren farmland, we came to some extinct volcanoes covered in tall eucalyptus trees. The Grampians National Park is looked after mainly by Aboriginals. There was a strong eerie and wild atmosphere as we entered the forest. The trees were black, marked by a recent bushfire. Hall's Gate was a very touristic town in the middle of the National Park. Apparently it was quieter than usual because of the bushfire that had happened not so long ago. However, people come here not only to see the striking views and [View Full Entry]

Heiß, aber schön

 Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Grampians
