Today we started our day with a 9Km walk in the 'wilderness'! We did nearly die- 7am and 9Km do not go together- at least not in my world! But the views were amazing and we saw some great wildlife. These included Kangaroos, a Goana, some black swans, parrots and some very large ants! We walked up high in the hills so could see far into the distance- check out the pics. We eventually came across a river and then followed that to end up at the beach- the most beautiful beach on our entire trip to KI. We got to paddle for a bit and then headed back to the farm for lunch and got our bags packed ready to leave. After lunch we went on a koala hunt (only to see them of ... read more

Hula dancing is the essence and spirit of Hawaii. Initially it was treated as a sacred ritual, but it slowly it has became a form of social entertainment. The dance is not without meaning. In fact, the heart of hula dancing is poetic text, which is referred to as Mele. All movements are interpreted and performed on the basis of the text. In hula dancing, hand and arm gestures are combined with rhythmic twisting and swirling. Each movement has a particular meaning and this coupled with the expressive hand gestures have even greater significance. While dancing, the movements that the dancers make may represent any facet of nature or life. Plants, trees, war, wind fire and water. All the elements are adequately represented and the viewer has no doubt in his mind as to the ... read more

Flinders Chase National Park: Seals and Seascapes A Long Drive that was Well Worth It After a quick stop by Kingscote for breakfast, we took the long drive to the exact opposite side of the island from where we were staying in Penneshaw. On the far end of the island is Flinders Chase National Park which is one of the must see sights on Kangaroo Island. The only unfortunate part of this story is that Flinders Chase is more than 2 hours from our origin point in Penneshaw. I know this is a sob story…poor Mikey had to drive two hours in Australia on a Tuesday morning. No more griping, I promise. With food in our stomachs, we arrived at Flinders Chase at about 11:30am which is a couple of hours before the tour buses tend ... read more

Day two on the great KI (short for Kangaroo Island obviously!). We had to get up early but the bacon and eggs were a good incentive! We started the day by going to see the Remarkable Rocks. They were very funny shapes and remarkable because they were so huge yet only had a few points actually balancing them on the cliff. As you may be able to see in some of the pics. Our next stop was Admirals Arch New Zealand Fur Seal Colony. The views as we walked around the bay were breathtaking and it was fun trying to spot all the seals as they were well camouflaged against the rocks. After that we went to Flinders Chase National Park for a platypus walk. We had to follow a trail and came across lots ... read more

Today we started our Kangaroo Island tour. Our first stop was Victor Harbor, a famous spot in South Australia for surfing and partying! We went to Middleton beach and got changed into our wetsuits- always exciting! However not always flattering! We then got given our surf boards and went for a warm up jog and stretches on the sand. We had some training on how to surf and practised the technique on our boards on the sand. We also learnt a bit about rips so that we could recognise them and what to do if we got caught in one. Then it was time to hit the water- we were so excited. Me and Laura tried to stay together but after she winded me with her surf board we thought it best to spread out ... read more

He kokkasivat meille australialaisia ruokia kuten periaustralialaista BBQ ruokaa ja paahdettua lammasta. Namnam! Tulihan sielta sitten pari hankintaakin tehtya. ... read more

Still in Adelaide... Australasia » Australia » South Australia » Adelaide By ChasanaskiApril 2nd 2007Ana & Chas Fisher Dear Friends and Family We are still in Adelaide, as many of you would know, because we were waiting on visas for Ana to work in England. Sadly, we were told on Friday that this was not to happen (despite us being told to apply and costing us $1000 in fees) so now we are ready to leave... if we had our passports. Hopefully the British High Commission can see fit to send us our passports before we are due to fly out on Good Friday. But an... read more

Introduction It was back to the bush for the Hikers this wekend and we treated ourselves to the Barossa. Just outside of Tanunda we picked up the Heysen trail as it traverses the Kaiser Stuhl Conservation Park. The last time we went to this park was July 2005 and the contrast between the two visits were striking. There were only a few, thin kangaroos this time when there were many breeding kangaroos 20 months ago. The recent rain has produced a fine green tinge to the land as it slowly starts to recover from the drought. The park has only gentle slopes and is suitable for family walks. There are a few trees which have tags on them so you can identify the different species of plants. We spent about three hours in the Park yesterday ... read more
