Introduction This was a drive that we did while we visited Quorn. Ken was keen to try out some Four-wheel driving so we joined him for some rough roads, high excitement and amazing scenery and wild life. You pay some money at the Austral Hotel in the main street of Quorn and access the Arden Hills from within Warren Gorge. A magnificent experience with stunning views to the East and West. Dan says... The drive was beautiful and stomach churning - a strange combination. Everywhere you saw nature, amazing views and lots of wildlife - it was so beautiful that you feel proud having Australian blood in you. It was stomach-churning as it went up and down, side to side and jiggle jiggle. I think I need an alka-selsa. ... read more

We made another trip to Hale with weekend. If you would like to know how to get there - I have included a route map. It was delightful to see water flowing in the creek and waterfall again after the last time we visited when it was bone dry. You might remember our previous blog about Hale: - but this was when it was bright and sunny - today's snaps are from a cool windy day that threatened (but didn't) shower. In other words, pretty good for walking. I took along Peter's golf umbrella in case it did rain - and it made a pretty good walking stick, so I might make 'taking an umbrella along' a bit of a habit. The only problem with this walk is that it is short - only 2 hours ... read more

Sorry it's been so long. Had a great dinner at Taj Mahal restaurant in budapest as farewell to Andrew and Monika, friends Gabor and Kriszti collected me next day and took me walking in the hills above Budapest, leafy and green with limestone rocks and great views of the city and surrounds. Next day they drove me to- Vienna! where we toured the summer palace of the Hapsburgs, huge and opulent, too many rooms to dust! Friends I have stood in the room where Mozart gave his first concert aged 6 to the queen, and viewed the latest new toilet from England, used by no less than emperor Franz Josef himself ( although he was not enthroned at the time.) We picnicked in the formal gardens which were superb of course. We walked through Vienna Downtown ... read more

Well, it's been a long couple of days. What with the family from hell and their three little ones who rostered themselves to squeal, cry, demand, fight and run down the aisle throughout the night, it just made me realise how lucky I was. We were at least seated on the other side of the aircraft, and I had kept my earplugs supplied by the Hotel in Heidelberg. In any case I resorted to watching another movie at around 5am. Considering that we left the hotel Saturday morning at 8:45am and finally cleared customs etc at Adelaide on Monday morning about 8:30am, it's been a long time since we saw a bed. However thanks to the facilities they provide at Changi airport, such as the pool and spa on the the 3rd level, as well ... read more

What happened One of Quorn's attraction is the Pitchi Ritchi Railway. Our day's adventure started when we were having our delicious Miller's breakfast at the Old Mill motel in Quorn - served by our gracious host, Concepta - with a loud toot-toot; indicating that the steam train was all steamed up and ready to go. The kids were very excited! We walked down to the station and paid for our pre-reserved tickets in the Wandana carriage. It was a delightful journey to Woolshed flat over several bridges, up hills, and followed by many on-lookers intent on waving and photographing the train. We kicked the footy while they changed the engine to the other end. We were also allowed into the engine and who should we meet but Walter - an old work colleague, who was ... read more

Introduction The hikers ventured to Quorn for some holidays with friends. About 10 minutes out of Quorn is a walking trail that takes you to the top of Dutchman's stern - a rocky hill that affords views to Wilpena Pound in one direction, and Spencer Gulf and Port Augusta in the other. The Information centre in the Main street in Quorn had free walking maps (and lots of not-so-helpful advice). How to get there Quorn is the gateway to the Flinders and is located about 3.5 hours drive North of Adelaide. The route map linked to this blog shows you the way. What happened The 5 of us started out late in the afternoon allowing about 2.5 hours for the walk. The start of the walk was part of the Heysen trail and followed around the ... read more

The outback crept up on us quicker than we had expected. The drive between the last settlements of civilisation, Adelaide and Port Augusta, are seperated by open, sparse land, just like in the centre. The roads are so straight all you see in the distance is a mirage of the sun on the bitumen. You can see cars coming from 10km's away, making overtaking road trains (lorries with 3 or 4 tankers in tow) which take around 1km to pass safely, easy. The landscape varies wildly, and we have been surprised at just how much foliage can survive in such a dry climate. The earth changes from a dusty yellow-orange to a harsh cracked reddy-brown, and in some lights looks black, almost as if the sun itself has burnt the very floor of the desert. ... read more

My 9000km in three weeks Australian road trip with my two friends Anne and Alex has begun! Melbourne (Victoria state) to Adelaide, through the outback to Cooper Pedy (both in South Australia), to Uluru, The Olgas, Alice Springs, up to Kakadu National Park, Litchfield National Park and Darwin (all Northern Territory) then down the West Coast passing Broome, Shark Bay, Ningaloo Reef (equal or better to Great Barrier Reef), down to Perth....so passing through 4 states, diverse territories and varied climates....yes, all in 21 days...! On Thursday 5th I left sunny, hot Brisbane (with a hideous post-Fraser Island camping cold) to fly to very cold and wet Melbourne. It has been great to catch up with Anne and Alex; not only to spend time with close friends but also to start a whole new phase ... read more

By second day we were beginning to consider everyone a new friend....packed in a bus, sharing meals and kitchen duties, and using neccessities of life together tends to do that. A couple from Sweden, nurse from Holland, guy and girl from Germany, a girl from Maine, an asian girl who grew up in Melbourne, (all twenty something)and a Kiwi, Les, the old guy on the trip, celebrating his 60th birthday by retracing his single days in Alice. Erica was our leader, she's got a great playlist (read Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler/ and more) on her MP3 player, so we know we're going to like her....not to mention we are always headed north and right into the sun...glad she's driving. Up at 5:30am for breakfast and headed to Wilpena Pound for a good hike. A really interesting ... read more
