My second day on Kangaroo island saw us heading towards the south west, to Flinders Chase National Park. On the way we saw some black swans with signets on the shore line and pelicans up close and personal, a wedge tailed eagle and the 4th most venomous snake the black backed tiger snakesunning himself on the road! During our coffee stop a superb fairy wren dropped by.....Arriving at Flinders Chase National Park took us to Remarkable Rocks, an incredible rock formation right on the coast our guide Jon thought the name was a bit too British and perhaps a more Oz name should be "Bloo**y Amazing Rocks! I think he is right they are incredible! Then down to Cape du Couedic the far south westand Admiral Arch to see New Zealand Fur Seals on the rugged coastland ... read more

What a fantastic day on Kangaroo Island just a short flight from Adelaide We were picked up at Kingscote, the main town on the island, by our guide Jon, a native of the island. What an interesting and informative guy he is turning out to be. There were just five of us in our group including Jon so we had a great opportunity to see a lot in our 4 x 4 as we travelled over the Island, which is about 100 miles long and 35 miles across (Seven times larger than Singapore Island!) It was not long before we saw our first koala and Kangaroo Island, Kangaroo in the wild as we headed north to Stokes Bay discovering a beautiful unspoilt beach and a stop for coffee and see a pelican drop by! Next heading ... read more

Good flight from Singapore to Adelaide overnight arriving at 6.30am only 6hours this time, a doddle! Nice warm weather here today its about 29 degrees going to rise to about 35 later! A very amusing driver picked me up and kept me entertained during the transfer to my Hotel He said his biggest client was the local undertaker who has 70% of the market in Adelaide I think I might have to set up an office in competition, any offers to staff it?!! I am staying at the Stamford Hotel at Glenelg right on the beach (A pallindrone for those English students amongst you!!) Interestingly the hotel group is named after the English founder of Singapore Sir Stamford Raffles I do like things following a theme........! Its right on the sandy shores of Hodfast Bay and ... read more

It's only me, do you recognise the words from the title? They're from one of my favourite Linkin Park songs, Faint, and you may remember it was also on our wedding reception CD compilation that we did. (Fascinating stuff I know, and don't ask me what else we had as for some reason thats the only one I remember. Probably because those words remind me of me & Ali, with her waffling away, me switching off and her realising a few mins later, then getting my attention again for me to then switch off again and so it goes on ...). Anyway back to the blog as this might be my last one once Ali has read this! So we arrive in Adelaide Monday 15th Oct after our "legandary" Ghan journey knackered from lack of asleep ... read more

A few pictures from last Sunday's Walk for the cure which was organised by the Juvenille Diabetes Research Foundation. A huge thanks to all the blog readers who donated - our team raised over $600 before the walk, which will go towards research into curing Diabetes type 1 (a disease that Dan has had since he was two). It was a lovely day - 22 degrees and bright and sunny. After doing our warm up exercises we set off for the walk - which was so pleasant and colourful along the seaside. The map of the walk is available online. If you would like to donate and you missed out earlier, the web sites stay open during October: Dan's donation web site Diana's donation web site... read more

Peter, Dan and I went to Mt Bryan last weekend to attend Kym's 50th birthday celebrations on the Sunday. On the Saturday, the boys went out on sheep duty with Tom and I decided to make my own walk around the homestead. I was only out for about 2 hours and took a few pictures as I walked near the Razorback at Mt Bryan. There are not many trees in this area and according to the original maps the country has always been grassland. The trees that you can see dotting the horizon in the 'Start' photo were planted by Peter and I on Boundary road. We actually planted a lot of trees in this area (pre-Dan) and it is nice to visit them and see how much they have grown. Thanks to those who helped ... read more

First of all, apologies to anyone trying to log onto the "Piston Workin" blog page...apparently Travelblog have had some sort of data loss and we haven't yet worked out how to restore the pics & text. At this stage it may even be gone for good. Onto brighter news....we have hit the bitumen once again and departed Mt G on the 15th Sept bound for Adelaide. First stop was to Roger's Farm in Coonawarra where there were baby animals galore, a turkey egg hunt, a bit of fence-building and even managed to squeeze in a wine tour with the Coonawarra Vignerons Society. Jeff, Roger & 1 other guy were the only males on the tour of about 40 women, so as you can imagine after a few wines the bus sounded like a touring chicken factory. ... read more

Introduction Today's walk was a new take on the Peters Hill walk described in George Driscoll's "50 real bush walks around Adelaide". The one that George describes as Walk number 1 in his book took ages when we last went in 2005- this is a modification that takes in a little bit more of the Heysen Trail, and we were able to complete in 3.5 hours. we also visited the town of Kapunda in particular map the minor giant sculpture of a Cornish miner, and the Kapunda mines, where we did a 1.5 km walk. How to get there... See the route map - from the GPO head to Gawler and then on to Kapunda. Travel 13 km beyond Kapunda through to Hamilton. After Hamilton we travelled a few more kilometres before turning left on Murray's ... read more
