Someone once said “be careful what you wish for”…if only I had taken heed!!! Having complained incessantly for the last few months about having to wear thermals, jumpers and wet weather gear (“why oh why didn’t we go north” was mentioned more than a few times!) we are now cowering in the shade of a gum tree at Hancocks lookout near the Flinders Ranges trying to see the funny side of the Australian climate! After leaving Adelaide our plan was to travel northwards to the Flinders Ranges National Park, across the Oodnadatta track and to visit Coober Pedy while the temperatures were still cool enough to do it comfortably and to be back in Adelaide well before summer hit on the 1st Dec. Unbeknown to us, nature obviously had other ideas of when summer was to ... read more

This morning it was time to say goodbye and jump on a bus to Alice Springs. I'll have to say nothing really happened allday. We stoped at a couple of roadhouses, checked out the salt lake's, before finally arriving in Coober pedy, late afternoon. Coober pedy is a famous opal mining town, 'Priscilla, queen of the desert' was also filmed here, if you haven't seen it, I recomend you do. Before we had time to relax we had a tour into one of the mine's to find out about opal mining. Another interesting thing a Coober Pedy is that most of the town live underground in dug outs. The reason is that the dug outs remain at a constant temperature of about 23 degrees. So there is no need for air conditioning. Which is why we ... read more

Leaving Adelaide the real road trip begins......................................................... Today I saw soooo many more interesting things- we were in the real outback!! For starters the weather was amazing- desert like......its amzing how the weather can be so different...................... Experienced real Australian colours- burnt oranges............desert land with sparce greenery- great photo opportunities which of course I took full advantage of as always! People's houses were in the absolute middle of no where!!!! Miles apart from their neighbours!!! How do they get food or milk for their brews- they must not see others for days or leave the house for days!!!!!!! I just find it crazy!!! I would pull my hair out!!! Poor Sylvia would be well used!!!!!! The roads were same same the whole way with little highlights thrown in there every now and again!!! A ... read more

Saturday started with another amazing sunrise over cloudy sky in Williams Creek. Today we drove less than 200 km (but still on dirt roads) to the miners town Coober Pedy. I had big expectations from this visit - I heard it’s an underground town, built underground because of the very high temperatures in summer. So there are underground house (in fact the name means in Aboriginal “white man burrow”…), but there’s a lot of ugliness above ground. It looks like a Bedouin town in the Negev - all dusty, no sidewalks, no green. But we did have a good pizza for lunch and a good Greek dinner (many immigrants came there dreaming to become reach in the Opal mines), so how can I complain? And we slept in our own burrow - underground hostel! The highlight ... read more

Bill Bryson says in Down Under that "the great virtue about driving through emptiness is that when you come to anything - anything at all - that might be called a diversion you get disproportionately excited." In my opinion, truer words have never been written. Jesse and I and our new English friend Paul (our third English friend named Paul actually) embarked on a four day drive through the Outback from Alice Springs to Adelaide today. Anytime we saw ANYTHING, including a passing car, a bird, a tree, and especially any and all roadsigns, we almost crapped ourselves with excitement. Some highlights include a cow crossing the road, a pile of tires and a series of roadsigns stating "Caution Cattle" to which someone had helpfully added creative verbs. The first was "Caution Cattle Jumping" then "Caution ... read more

From Adelade we headed North. Yay warmer! We started by stopping for a 10am wine tasting. The wine was really good too... So all buzzed up on Sav Blanc and a Rose Dessert wine we headed north through the Flinders Ranges. Lunch was a tasty Kangaroo Pie, which might be my favourate red meat. Who needs cows when you can have roos. From there we went to Alligator gorge... hiked through the river and gorge. We spent the night in the bustling metroplis of Quorin. In all seroiusness it is almost a real town. It had a decent pub. you've gotta love the Aussies, they build the worlds longest fence as a deterent to keep the dingos away from the sheep and cattle. now any dingo that wanted too could get through this fence, but it ... read more
