There is no puzzle as to why Surfers Paradise, which is part of the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia is such a popular holiday destination. After all, it is the entertainment and glam capital of the island that is ‘Down Under’, and epitomizes that perfect marriage of city and beach lifestyle. But it’s the eclecticism of Surfers (as it is affectionately referred to in Australian vernacular) that attracts people from all walks of life. There are activities and events to cater and appease everyone, from families to backpackers, schoolies (young adults who have just finished high school), singles, surfers, honeymooners and retirees. It is home to a host of theme parks and national parks including, Dreamworld, Wet’n’Wild Water World, Warner Bros Movie World, Adrenalin Park, the Australian Outback Spec... read more

So finally we were our way to Queensland which is also known as the ‘sunshine state’ as it is blessed with over 300 days of sunshine a year. Queensland is such a diverse part of Australia which has the most amazing white sandy beaches, lush tropical rainforests, magnificent mountain ranges that stretch all the way to the very dry and very hot outback and then there of course the most important thing for me, the great barrier reef which is said to be the largest living organize in the world! So as you can understand I was very excited to have arrived in a state that offers so much along with having heard that Queenslanders are a ‘mad as a bunch of hatters’ which suited me fine, I couldn’t wait! Emily and I drove straight ... read more

On May 12th MC and I had our one year anniversay. We woke up to find a bouquet of flowers, a box of chocolates, and a bottle of champaign that my mom had sent to us, a nice way to start the day. We spent most of the day just relaxing around the apartment and hanging out. For dinner that night I suprised MC and took her on a dinner cruise that went through the Gold Coast cannals and out into the Pacifc along the Surfer's Paradise coastline. There was also a look out deck on top of the boat where we went up to to look out over the coast and out onto the ocean. The food on the boat was amazing. It was a Brazilian BBQ style menu, which means that it is ... read more

It’s our first night together after 127 days apart. In early January, Helen went to Mt Isa in the outback of Queensland on a four month contract to work in the town hospital’s intensive care unit while I finished up a two year project with BECA for the Samoan Government helping villages prepare local coastal infrastructure management plans to improve their resilience to natural disasters like cyclones and global warming. It feels magical looking out from our 11th floor apartment in the Oriana, right on the coast at Surfers Paradise. It’s the exact same place we stayed as a family for the Worlds Fair back in 1988. I cannot believe my eyes. Helen is as beautiful as ever. ... read more
