Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

We are now at Bowen a very nice seaside town just on the mainland from the Whitsunday islands. We are travelling down to airlie beach tomorrow for Christmas. We have booked to go over to the Whitsundays for 23rd. We hope to visit 3 islands and do a spot of snorkelling. Our trip to Dunk island when we were staying at Mission beach was great, only 4 of us on the boat and probably only a few more on the whole island. the snorkelling we did there (in stinger suits!) was a bit dissapointing as the water was a bit murky, [View Full Entry]

Today I left with a rush to the Sunferries Terminal for the Greyhound bus. Fran had forgotten about me! And something came in between she said. So I have been waiting for 1,5 hours on a bench in the shade, which was still warm. I wasn't really awake at the time either, felt a bit weak. Luckily I was completely packed so I could get in Fran's car immediately, otherwise I'd had to take a cab or walk. Australia is an interesting country, you don't see many different people (colors). I feel like I'm the only coloured person walking around, apart [View Full Entry]

The scenery as we have been driving south has blown us away. As we head out of Townsville we are flanked on either side of the road with row after row of banana trees and what looks like sugar cane fields. Every so often we happen across roadside stalls selling the freshest and juiciest fruit imaginable and it would be rude not to try some wouldn’t it? As we arrive at Airlie Beach we are both feeling a little “beached out” and don’t really feel the vibe here. Its a place very much geared to the young, and most are here [View Full Entry]

Bricking it
Point of no return

From Townsville it was a fairly short drive down to Airlie Beach so we arrived with plenty of time to pitch the tent and explore. We chose a central campsite - a strange place which felt like it was a popular site with tourists back in the early seventies but had since been a bit neglected. Airlie itself was a lively strip of cafes and bars mixed in with travel agents and tourist shops and finished off with a large man-made lagoon for visitors to lounge around. We spent some time pottering, lounging and swimming before taking a walk down the [View Full Entry]
