World Famous Toad Race on Magnetic Island
Published: October 11th 2012Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Airlie BeachWell we have now been to the world famous toad race on Magnetic Island - I know you are probably saying world famous? That is what I thought but what a fun night we had. They auction off 8 toads and place them in a clear container and there is a large circle on the floor. Unlike the horse racing in Ascot, Dubai etc where the horse that passes the line first by a nose wins the race. In the world famous toad races it is the first toad whose bum is over the line that wins. There are 3 races and I managed to get a toad in the first race and he/she was called Kentucky Sue and it cost me $55 which seems a lot but I thought I was onto a winner and ... read more
Airlie beach, Great Barrier Reef
Published: September 23rd 2012Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Airlie BeachNorth of Mackay we stayed in a free camp site, way off the highway along a 7k dirt road, which was really pretty and very quiet with only 2 other lots of people staying there. Met two really nice young English guys who were working on the local sugar cane farm and Pete had a good chat to them (I think he misses his chats with males sometimes.) Today we moved on to Shute Haven near Airlie Beach, gate way to the Great Barrier Reef for many tourists. There are so many many day trips to choose from but we have opted for a sail on a tall ship , the Derwent Hunter built in 1946 to take us around a few of the islands along with a bit of snorkelling and as an added bonus, ... read more
Airlie beach and whitsundays
Published: September 18th 2012Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Airlie BeachWe arrived at Airlie Beach at the beginning of August, with the idea of spending a couple of days sailing the islands of Whitsunday, one of the “must do”s of the Australian east coast. We first spent some nights in an organic farm inland, which was run by a couple with two daughters and two dogs and two horses and two..no three cows (but actually two giving milk and one calf). We stayed there through the helpX system, helping with some works 4-5 hours a day. We did some fencing, weeding with a really hot sun. They were quite into organic food, have their veggie garden and doing their own cheese, butter and yogourt from their own fresh milk. Baking as well their bred. That is to say that we filled our stomachs quite a lot ... read more
Grandpa here is the password Austrailia or austrailia2012 The letters should not because sensitive We are iairlines beach until the 23rd it is a spectacular location and so so tropical it is hard for us to believe that it is winter here! The weather is quite perfect but it does get chilly quickly when the sun goes down at 6 pm each night. Quite amazing actually as it disappears in about two minutes! We spent the day on Camira yesterday - an 80 ft catamaran snorkeling and spending time at the famous whitehaven beach on Whitsunday island. The sand is pure white silicA that cleans jewel really well and feels like baby powder. It is a protected park so you can't bar.ing sand back so you will just have to trust us with how amazing it ... read more

The Rodeo, Long wait in Rockhampton and overnight bus to Airlie Beach..
Published: June 11th 2012Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Airlie BeachSo we headed off to the "bullzeye" Rodeo in the "Great Western" hotel on Saturday night. There was a mini bus going from our hostel in Emu Park, carrying about 10 people. We were all given a can of beer and a cowboy hat before we left. Full of excitement, we undertook the 40 minute journey nto Rockhampton. So we arrived and whet an experience it was! It was like walking on to a set of a country and western movie. Real cowboys standing at the bar- check shirts, wrangler jeans and leather chaps. Along with this they had that country accent, the walk and general demeanour of real life cowboys! It was surreal, really it was! There were real, famous bull heads on the wall, taking pride of place. These were champion bulls in ther time ... read more
14th May ’12 Leaving Sydney and the start of the Motorhead Motor Home Adventure! Howard and Matty set off to fetch the Motor Home while the rest of us packed up and got the gear down to the road to wait for them. We weren’t sure how long it would take them but knew when they pulled up we would just have to jump in and not hang around. Once they arrived we had a mad scramble to put the bags in and then we shot straight off. Well this was our first introduction to the motor home and it was bigger than I had expected but with 4 of us plus bags everywhere it wasn’t long before we realised that we had to get the gear stowed away. As we flew round corners the stuff ... read more
Had an 11 hour journey to Airlie Beach and Wednesday! We stopped in Sarina and did lawn bowling which was pretty random and I got perved on by some of the old men there! I'm even worse at lawn bowling than I am at 10 pin bowling and I came to the conclusion that I pretty much suck at all activities! I keep trying and hey its the taking part that counts! :P Arrive in Airlie quite late in the evening and feeling pretty stressed! Had a lot to sort out this evening to get ready for our Whitsundays trip tomorrow. Had to do laundry as I have run out of clean clothes, as well as meet our bus group for food. Had an amazing pizza at the Downunder bar, possibly the best pizza I have ... read more
Hello again! Well I arrived safely in Cairns early on Tuesday morning and got a transfer to my hostel, Gilligans. I was sharing a room with 7 other people but this was more than made up for by the fact that the hostel was right in the centre of town, had it's own swimming pool, bar and club and the people in my room were really friendly. I went out for lunch with Andy, someone I met on the Cambodia tour and then sunbathed for most of the afternoon (fortunately I managed not to burn this time which was rather nice). I had dinner in the hostel and then went out for the night. On the Wednesday, I had booked myself on a boat trip out to the Barrier Reef to do some snorkelling which was ... read more
