Geo: -34.4259, 150.9Yeah, Still in Wollongong, but about to leave, I've been in this area since the start of June but it feels so much longer. Staying at the Kieraleigh Backpackers has had it's ups and downs, but it's been great. It's a nice area. After checking out most of the area, I wanted to check out more of what the South Coast had to offer, although this blog only includes a little bit.Work plodded along nicely and I enjoyed the silent school grounds and empty classrooms for the two splendid weeks that are the school holidays. Luckily I only had to endure one day after school resumed before I found myself on the plane to Melbourne for the week to come.I flew to Melbourne for a much needed break, to surprise a friend on his birthday, ... read more

Geo: -34.4259, 150.9Well this has to be one of my favorite areas with some amazing lookouts everywhere you look.I don't think this area gets enough credit.I had never been to this area until now and had no idea what the landscape held and I love it.Wollongong, best described as a mini Newcastle, but I guess you have to spend time in and around Newcastle to say that. Both North and South of Sydney seem to be identical, but the south being smaller. After spending another long and extended period in Newcastle, it was time to hit up the next area, Illawarra. It didn't start off the best, sleeping in my car in the parking lot of the visitors centre for the first night, very cold and very uncomfortable! But I put it behind me and enjoyed the fresh highland ... read more

Well I've had a relaxing couple of days. I don't know the last time I've uttered/typed those words. Kim has been in her med school placement for the week so I've been on my own for the days. I decided to explore Wollongong by foot. I did a little shopping. I forgot my camera cord to upload photos. I guess if I forgot anything that's not the worst thing in the world. Bought a tent for future adventures. Found a waffle place that offered real Canadian maple syrup (imported by an Aussie company). I give the waffles an A- and the syrup a B+. Not the high grade stuff, but certainly heaps (I'm adding this to my vocabulary...see previous post) better than Aunt Jemima. Then I went to the beach and just sat and read. I've ... read more

Wollongong & My First Roo I made it out of Sydney feeling satisfied. I saw the major sites and experienced some of what the city has to offer. In other words, I'm not much of a city person. In contrast, Wollongong (~1.5 hour train ride south of Sydney) is a town of about 250,000 right along the coast that is much more to my liking. Still enough to do without the hecticness of a big city. I'm staying with my friend Kim here whom I was a resident adviser with at UVic in my second year. She's in medical school here but it was a long weekend in Australia for the Queen's birthday (we think Elizabeth?) so she had 3 days off. On Saturday afternoon we went up Mount Keira on the edge of town to ... read more

Hi! Well, we finally left Manly and we've headed to Wollongong, about 80km south of Sydney, to stay with some other friends we've met while travelling. We've also bought a car - a 1985 Ford Telstar TX5 - whom we have named Bruce. He's very brown inside but seems to work acceptably well and since as it doesn't have the traditional Aussie V8 we should be able to afford to drive it about! As a quick update - we've generally done very little! We did a walk to Bondi beach on Saturday and on Sunday hired surfboards and gave that a go on Manly Beach with varied success. We both got to our knees/feet but standing proved to be a bit too much for us first time out! We're now preparing for the trip down the ... read more

Since I have given up on job searching, I have been looking for some activities to spend my time while Carlos works. Volunteer will guarantee I get a spot for whatever I choose to do and not having to fight for space, I am sick of interviews. After some research, I've picked Conservative Volunteers. This organization runs various types of environmental programs such as tree planting, national park maintenance, fencing, weeding and other activities to protect the wildlife, etc. The programs are held all across Australia. Overnight program requires a fee of $40 per night, which includes accommodation and food. This is quite popular with the backpackers as it allows them to explore the region from a different perspective and low cost. The program I picked is tree planting / wedding at Duck Creek in Wollongong. ... read more
