Yeah, Still in Wollongong, but about to leave, I've been in this area since the start of June but it feels so much longer. Staying at the Kieraleigh Backpackers has had it's ups and downs, but it's been great. It's a nice area.
After checking out most of the area, I wanted to check out more of what the South Coast had to offer, although this blog only includes a little bit.
Work plodded along nicely and I enjoyed the silent school grounds and empty classrooms for the two splendid weeks that are the school holidays. Luckily I only had to endure one day after school resumed before I found myself on the plane to Melbourne for the week to come.
I flew to Melbourne for a much needed break, to surprise a friend on his birthday, to catchup with friends and to wish another goodbye for a change of life.
It was a great week that was non stop and action packed.
I went to Healesville for a little going away retreat for a good friend. A huge house full of modern furniture, a 12 man spa and views that make you forget about the concrete slab that is the city.
For the
day we went and visited the Victorian country town of Marysville which was completely wiped out from the fires of last year. The regrowth is only visible on the Eucalypt trees, a strange colour mixture of black and green, but looks kind of cool.
The Next weekend saw me driving up to Sydney to see the old folks. I hadn't seen them since leaving for NSW after my India trip which was over 4 months. They were finishing their last week as what Dad describes it as their "Worldwide tour of Australia". Their trip saw them heading up the west coast of Australia to Darwin, down the center to Adelaide and across NSW to Sydney in a 4WD Camper.
We stayed at the Savoy Hotel in the glamorous shopping suburb of Double Bay. Our days in Sydney included the usual city tourist attractions, a lunch included boat cruise of the harbor and a trip up the Northern beaches. It was a great few days and the memories would have to last till the next time I see my parents for Christmas in New Zealand.
I have been saying to myself that I want a digital SLR camera for Europe, I enjoy photography and
finally got around to getting one. Trying to work out all it's functionss though takes time, so I took a day trip down the coast to the white sands of Jervis Bay.
I've heard a lot of people say it's a really nice area with some of the whitest sand in the world.
It was a short 2 hour drive south when I arrived to the small town of Huskisson. A wide open bay, surronded my national parks and small townships. I found a nice little beach and sat for a while and enjoyed the sun.
I moved around the bay and got to the park entrance gate which included a fee, but I wasn't interested in going in, so I hugged the shoreline of the St Georges Basin and stopped for some rather dismal fish and chips.
I made my way back via Nowra and sampled the local skate park.
Two guys here at the hostel have been here for at least 1.5 years each and enjoy the surfing lifestyle that Wollongong, or the South Coast, has to offer. I took my camera with me and joined Dan and Dave on a surfing shoot. The waves weren't that great on the day,
but the weather made for some interesting photo opportunities.
So my next blogs will be from the other side of the world, France and England. I can't wait to do those.
