I also attended a protest against a Conference of the world's top 300 CEO's, which was organized by Forbes. This was also quite disappointing. I didn't really get the feeling that the protest was a popular movement, but just a group of a few hundred students, anarchists and other disaffected groups of people. The group of people marched to the Opera House, where the conference was being held. However the Opera House had been completely fenced off, and surrounded with hundreds of cops (who probably out numbered the protesters). Some people started swinging on the fences, and eventually broke through, at which point the police charged in en-masse, including a number of police on horses! It was about then (with the adrenaline pumping from the excitement of it all) that I decided that I didn't want ... read more

We woke up Monday excited to be in Australia and ready to go to the city for orientation. This is where renting the car proves to be a mistake, haha. We find out that Sydney is the 2nd largest city in the world the hard way. MN trying to direct me and me trying to drive in downtown Sydney is quite the disaster. We somehow find where we’re going and then go to the nearest parking garage. It definitely cost $40 for two hours, no good! We went to orientation and found out a ton of great information that will certainly help us down the road. Our first mission when we got out was to get the car, so we weren’t broke, and turn it in a day early. The rest of the day we spent ... read more

Sunday morning came early and we headed to the airport. We were so sad to leave Lynds, but just kept praying that everything would work out the way it was supposed to. MN and I arrived in Sydney at about 12 p.m. to a most beautiful day! We were so excited to be outside, it was awesome! Before we left we had decided to rent a car, because our apartment was a $75 dollar taxi ride away. So after getting all that squared away, he hands us the keys and we put our luggage into our Holden Astra. MN and I were really really nervous because of the left lane and driving in the passenger side. I volunteered to drive and we were on our way. Talk about a scene! MN had about eight maps out ... read more

Over the weekend I attended the Sydney Social Forum. In all honesty I was a bit disappointed. It did provide an interesting insight into how things are in Australia. Their government is WAY worse than ours on things like refugees and the war in Iraq. Most of the sessions just seemed like a bit of a talk-fest, with no real talk of action which could be taken immediately. Many sessions were about plans of how the world could work (grand socialist schemes) which didn't seem to place any focus on the implementation. The turn-out of 300 people seemed a little low for a city of 3 million! The whole forum seemed a bit scattered, there were no events which brought all the people together, and I thought that more could have been done to introduce people ... read more

Has it really been 6 months we've been here? Yeah, well almost, we landed here on March 8th and leave on August 30th for Japan, and although I don't think the time has flown in still find it hard to believe we've been here nearly half a year, we've done so much, seen so much and made many friends and it's hard to believe that we're leaving on Tuesday. Now I personally can't wait to get to Japan, and it's nothing to do with Australia in a negative way, I've loved it here but after 9 months on Easy Street with the language, culture, food and general way of life it will be a great shock to the system to get to Japan, and Asia in general, where out whole worlds will get turned upside down. ... read more

Well I've touched down in Sydney, and was greeted warmly at the airport, by Angela, who I used to work with. The flight was good, Emirates have really good in flight movies, I got to watch "Hotel Rawanda", which was a pretty moving story set in the genocide of Rawanda. Interesting movie for someone setting off to save the world! Leaving my home, I feel somewhat more connected with the wider world. Yesterday was Angela's flatmate's (Anne-Marie) birthday, and afew people came over. So within a couple of hours of arriving I was already drink in hand, having quite a good time being hit on by one on Anne-Marie's friends! I was some-what worried about being abused by the hospitallity! This morning I got up, with jeans on but no top, and was talking on the ... read more

Sunday before last: Adam ran in the City to Surf race, and did a great job. With him running were tons of people in costumes..Our favorites included Men at Work (running, towing a fridge with beer), men dressed in sperm outfits (promoting condoms), gorillas (apparently there was a whole pack of them), and Tricky Dick (a man wearing a Nixon mask and undies, and nothing else.). After Adam finished, Mel, Jan and I sat on the beach for the afternoon and played frisbee (much to the chagrin of our surrounders) and played with the waves. There were people in the water; the water was relatively warm, but there was some wind, so it was too cold outside for my tastes to go in. Soon, surf lesson though. Last Sunday: Andrew, Adam and I set off with ... read more

When I woke up this morning I still didn’t know it would be my last day. I read my book and I had breakfast and at 9AM I called El-Al to check if I can get an earlier flight than next week. The only available one was tomorrow. Then I called Cathay Pacific and after waiting maybe 15 minutes on the line I found out that they have availability as well. So, yes, I booked those two flights and suddenly I realized: this was my last day in Sydney, in Australia and Down Under, in the Southern Hemisphere! So in this special event I finally went to do the Sydney Opera House tour. I postponed it for too long, it’s the last opportunity. The building is really beautiful from inside, even if its glory and fame ... read more
