G'day there!

I was mooching off Janice's blog, but I decided to start my own, and try my hand at this diary/newsletter/fun thing.(see footnote) I'm at University of Sydney until November, and then New Zealand til December.

(footnote) A number of you have remarked that blogs are dorky and/or nerdy. Yes, I must agree, so I will try to keep this as "Cool" as possible.

I don't remember quite when this was.. probably the middle of October. Dave, our crazy crazy crazy jolly American friend, invited us to go to Cronulla to visit some of his friends. So Jan, Adam, Andrew and Steph and I took the train out there to meet up with them. We surfed on the beach, and played games, and drank, and played games...including lawn bocce with beer bottles. Then we went back for a delicious barbie at the ozzies' house.. where they had an in-ground trampoline, a hot tub and a pool... living in the house were two pro snowboarder/skater dudes. andrew was a trampoline fiend, and dave also pulled some moves. i worked on being able to..flip. since i never have.. and i'm a nervous trampoline jumper too, because i hear my dad's voice, "lawsuits, ... read more

Don't mess with the King of Thailand.. or any of the royal family, so says the guide books to Thailand. They are right, everyone is crazy obsessed with them in Bangkok. Huge pictures (we're talking 30 feet tall) abound around the city. Speaking of Bangkok, it is a hugely chaotic place...Everyone's out to scam you, trying to sell you suits, tuk-tuk rides, and various other forms of...ahem..entertainment. We would walk to a temple and be pestered with people along the way, "oh the temple? closed, i show you some place else.." NO! we yell, and go on to the temple, which of course, is open. This cycle repeated itself over and over. We met in New World Lodge, a place that was mediocre, but better than anything we would have stayed in elsewise. Met the group, ... read more

it's very weird...classes are almost over.. we are hitting the home stretch so to speak. I'm very excited to come home- I miss you all!!!- but at the same time, i will miss australia when i leave. sydney is a beautiful city- i love sitting by the water and going to the beach- but i will really miss the countryside...The long drive trips I've gotten to do have been amazing. The people I've met have been incredible, and I feel so priveledged to hang out with the people i do. As the famous philosopher Bill once said to Ted, in the late 1980s classic, Bill and Ted's Most Excellent Adventure, "Ted, this has been a most excellent adventure." Don't know why I'm writing this now. Ah well, when in Rome. Australia ho!... read more

A Word on Kangaroos

I have heard that some of you are distressed at my eating of kangaroos. I would just like to clear up the whole story on kangaroos. Kangaroos are equivalent to the deer situation in the northeast (except, kangaroos are of course, way cooler)...they are thriving in the increased cutting down of forests for agriculture and field space, as they feed on grasses. Farmers hate them. Why? Because Kangaroos can be vicious. They can kill a man.. they have also been known to do what these pictures depict. Eating kangaroos provides a market for this meat. The meat of a kangaroo is one of the healthiests ones around. If Australia could farm kangaroos instead of cattle, it would lead to less degredation of the environment, because cattle are rabble rowsers, and kangaroos have evolved in this environment ... read more

I really need to take more pictures. Alas. I will.. probably not. Lately I have been getting ready to go to Thailand and Singapore.. I am so excited to meet up with Jordana again, and I'm going with Jan and Adam, two of my favorite people, and Greg and Josh, who I don't know. So last Monday there was a free barbeque on the lawn in front of the Main Quadrangle (seriously, the school looks like Hogwarts..) for the Evangelical Union. So we went and took advantage of free sausages. Look at pictures, it was fun...At least it was a good break between our Dracula-like lecturer of Aboriginal religions and our tutorial with him. Last night we played Kings with me, Jan, Benny (Jan's Aussie boyfriend), Steph (a nice aussie from Women's), Leslie (this girl is ... read more

So, since Janice and I ended not being able to go skiing because of logistics/money/Budget and AutoEurope, (grr), we needed an adventure. I scoured the web, and found out about a horseback riding place about an hour north of sydney. I got Andrew and Janice interested, so we were going to ride the train up, and then figure out transportation around. We borrowed a tent and some sleeping bags and were fully intent on having a fire and camping out. The day of our departure, last Friday, I found a cheap car rental, which equaled or was cheaper than the amount we would have had to pay on non-car transport. So we got on the train, and an hour later, we had our car from Howard the wry, "I've seen this all before" car rental man. ... read more

Oh, hello there. Didn't see you come in. Today I got sunburnt on my face. Stupid me. I walked from Women's to Darling Harbour, then around Darling Harbour, then up to some random suburbs, then realized I was lost and in a shady part of town and hark, I happened upon Darling Harbour again. I love Darling Harbour..it's so darling.. ha ha.. ha.. It's got parks, the aquarium, the naval museum, the chinese garden of friendship, eateries and drinkeries, etc. After I happened upon it again, I decided to eat my sandwich and read my book that I had purchased at the aboriginal music show I went to. It was free, which is great, and also interesting and informative. The guy played didjeridoos, which actually is irish gaelic for black guy playing a long whistle like ... read more
