So its finally hit me... we have made it to Australia... suppose the moment was when we went for a walk past the Sydney Opera house this morning!! Any way i'll rewind a bit to tell you how fantastic Hong Kong was... after the 12 hour flight we couldnt be bothered to try and find our way around the massive city at night but luckily enough for us we jumped on the free hotel shuttle (which was very handy n must have saved us loads on taxis) and we started asking 2 english couples about where to go in Hong Kong. One thing lead to another and before we knew it they were showing us everywhere and the older couple who were celebrating their 47 wedding anniversary were telling us all bout what the harbour looked ... read more

The flight over was a little eventful and the one thing we knew would get us through our 9hrs was the T.V. Would you beleive it both of ours were broken, we were devestated!! and to top it off we had possibly the worse turbulance we've ever experienced. It was quite comical watching Sarah and the lad next to us trying to drink their tea whilst riding a roller coaster. Back to the T.V's the air stewards had tried on a number of occassions to get them working but it was just not happening. As one was trying we hit bad turbulance and to our shock he said "I dont think it really matters coz it looks like we're all going to die anyway"!!! We couldnt believe he said it and burst out laughing. Needless ... read more

This morning was admin morning, and our mission was to try and arrange 2 complicated bank transfers to Russia and Bhutan for later trips on our travels. However as we predicted this proved more difficult than the tour arrangers planned. We were laughed at, expectedly so, when we asked an Australian bank to transfer money from a UK bank account to a Russian or Bhutanese bank account. Hmmm, thinking caps have to be put back on. Once we had worked out the Sydney train system - without maps (not sure whose bright idea it was to have stations without any maps of the train system!). Anyway we made it to the stop we wanted, and followed the internet ‘how to get to our Wicked Van depot’ instructions. After walking for 25 minutes and getting anxious of ... read more

Today’s plan was a day at and around Bondi beach, but astonishingly we had to make alternative plans - the sky was overcast and it rained most of the day. Call this summer!? So we went to the Australian Museum, thinking it would be okay, but it turned out to be brilliant. The best bit was an exhibition on skeletons. So simple but so effective and very interesting. Have you ever seen a hedgehog’s skeleton? Probably not, but it’s worth looking out for… Or a python’s? Other things of interest included a large room containing specimens of all the birds found in Australia (“Your Dad would fill a whole memory card in here” said Ed to Gemma), the BBC’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition and an Abo, or rather Indigenous Australian, exhibition. After the excitement ... read more

Well today, actually. One of the Aussie girls on our African trip, Laura, used to work at Sydney’s Taronga Zoo, and she’d encouraged us to go and have a look. We caught a ferry from Circle Point across the harbour to the zoo, with amazing views of the city along the way, and spent most of the day there. It’s a really well presented and laid out zoo, and naturally gave us a chance to see Kangaroos, Wombats, Possums, Koalas and Kookabaras. And a platypus which was pretty cool. Given that only a few days ago we were seeing African big game up close in the wild, the ‘Africa’ zone wasn’t the highlight for us, but they did seem to have almost everything in their zoo bar unicorns. In fact they even had a Black Swan, ... read more

After an excellent night’s sleep we set out walking to the most obvious destination we could think of - the Sydney Opera House. We walked through the beautiful Botanical Gardens, with the sun shining and reflecting off the water in the harbour, watching countless office workers going for a lunchtime jog. It’s no surprise that Australia wins everything if this gives any indication of how seriously they take their exercise. And they are definitely the healthiest-looking nation we’ve come across yet. Sure they’ve got plenty of pie and beer addicts but so has everywhere else - it’s most noticeable when seeing how their slender schoolkids compare to the overweight ones back home (let alone in America). We went for an hour-long guided tour of the Sydney Opera House and were so impressed that we decided to ... read more

Finally we reach Australia, the English backpacker’s usual destination. Immigration was fine, and our bags turned up safely, but there was no sign of the table. Eventually, after various ‘officials’ had pointed us in various wrong directions, Ed stumbled across it as it (very wrongly) made its unaccompanied way towards Customs. The Customs man who inspected the package was actually extremely helpful, unlike his moronic young colleague who rather pointlessly (and unsuccessfully) kept asking a stubborn Ed to move to a different spot 3 metres away. The table got the thumbs up from Customs, and it was actually quite impressive to see how much care they took over making sure no insects had come along with it. The helpful guy even helped wrap it up again. The only disappointing news was that it had split down ... read more

Feb 14. Couldn't think of anything to do except go to ABC in Ultimo like last year. Gave sticker to compas program woman who said they were doing a program on the flag in a couple of months. Sticker to Radio National and miscellaneous employees. One bloke from Radio National came back out and recorded interview for program he was doing in religion area. He was connecting flag with sacredness. When I said current flag has three saint's crosses on it so it wasn't multicultural he was rapt. Emailed 'Alternative Media Group' three newspapers - city news, hub news and bondi. Otherwise I'm running out of ideas. However people now say they know about the design so something's working. Feb 15. Met Duncan 'Beast' reporter in Bronte. Story due early March. Said he'd talk to his ... read more

Well, we finally arrived in sydney, australia, after a long 20 hr flight, via singapore. Took off at 2200 GMT, a quick snack, (courtesey of the lovely looking air stewardesses), and ready for bed. Just as lovely dreams of white sands and sexy ladies were entering my head, an announcement from the cabin crew...."is there any doctors or nurses on board, we have a medical emergency." GREAT!!! The whole point of me coming to the other side of the world is to get away from work. I've not even reached there yet, and some twat has already pisses me off!! So Carmen puts her hand up straight away, and volunteers my services (THANKX HUN!), hoping for a free upgrade no doubt!! So the cabin crew come and ask me "are you a doctor?" No, I reply, ... read more
