We both really liked Sydney and probably could have spent a lot more time there. We stayed in Kings Cross which was a bit dodgy. It is the red light district, there were prostitutes and junkies everywhere. Michael got propositioned by a junkie prostitute one night when he went to the shop haha. The place didn't seem unsafe it just a a few dodgy characters. Kings cross is also where the best nightlife and the cheapest accommodation so that is why we stayed there. We stayed in Jackaroo Hostel and they were only four bed dorms luckily on our first night there was no one else do we had the dorm to ourselves. On our first day in Sydney we went to Bondi Beach. It was the windiest day though and sand was blowing everywhere so ... read more
We slept in a bit and headed to breakfast at the Vibe. We were an hour late to breakfast because the hotel and the entire city was operating on holiday hours because of Good Friday. Thankfully, our hotel was flexible and we had a made to order breakfast. We ate and headed to the zoo by ferry. Taronga Zoo is quite hilly and to get to the zoo, one typically takes a skyrail to the top. Once you get to the top, you quickly realize that the animals, especially the giraffes in the zoo have the best view of the Sydney skyline. When we arrived at the top and admired the skyline and the opera house, we took a deep breath, and although we had been in Australia for nearly 2 weeks, the thought of actually ... read more
Just became aware I’m on the other side of the world
Published: February 9th 2012Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Kings CrossThe flight between Santiago and Sydney went smoothly, despite the fact that I had to seat in the middle seats of the middle row in economy. A short stopover in New Zealand and finally arrived on Sunday 5th of February at 7 am in Sydney. Customs went fairly quickly and when that was done, from the airport I took the train to the home of my first host in Australia, Mark Ashley; last year I joined a community called “Couchsurfing” or CS (self-explanatory name). This community is basically a way to travel and meet locals, which enables oneself to stray away from the usual tourist paths. People may offer you a place to stay, show you around the city or meet up for a coffee or a drink. It’s a great way to meet people from ... read more
Day 1 The bus travels over the harbour bridge and I catch my first glimpse of Sydney circular quay and the opera house. I think it looks smaller than what I imagined somehow. I arrive at central at 00:20 in the morning after a very long bus ride where I finish my book and drain my I pod battery. Central is where all the buses and train form up on each other. I wander into the station as I need to make my way to Kings Cross. After half an hour of trying to work out where I need to be I eventually board the tube train. I've never seen one before that is a double decker. The tube takes roughly 15 minutes and I get off at my stop. I have heard stories of kings ... read more

Published: December 30th 2011Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Kings CrossHello Again, I am now writing from the other side of the world, the amazing down under, Australia! Toilets really do flush the opposite direction haha and yes that was one of the first things i checked when i landed. Natalie and I have being in Australia for a few weeks now and have completed a lot!! We have both being very busy beavers and have had very little sleep due to it. We arrived on an overnight flight from Bangkok to Sydney, where this extremely nice local paid for our Cab to Circular Quay. From there we hooped onto a Ferry and immediately saw the Sydney Opera house and Harbour Bridge. We ended up at the Taronga Zoo, where we met up with Brad my friend who i met last year while living in Zanzibar. ... read more
Woolloomooloo
Published: November 29th 2011Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Kings CrossWe decided to check out some areas of Sydney that we hadn’t been to before today, so it was another day of walking! We started with a walk down to Darling Harbour where we got an ice-cream and enjoyed views of the Cruise ship which had docked in the harbour. We then walked on further to the Opera House where we were hoping to see the Sunday markets, but they seemed to be missing that day! So we continued walking around the coast line, through the Botanical Gardens and around Farm Cove onto to Mrs Macquarie’s Chair and Mrs Macquarie’s Point. From here we continued around the coast line to Woolloomooloo Bay, passing the Andrew Charlton outdoor pool and on down to Finger Wharf. We decided it was time for a well-earned rest when we arrived, ... read more
Sydney (part 2)
Published: November 16th 2011Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Kings CrossHave been quite busy since my last entry, looking for jobs and an apartment. Not having much luck with a job, think I'm giving up looking for now. Hopefully I've got a job for Jan and Feb though in a place called Dubbo NSW, doing MRI, CT and generals. (When I first found out about the job I kept calling it Guppo, and was getting a bit concerned when no-one had heard of it that it was in the middle of nowhere.) Fingers crossed for that one. Have also found an apartment, I move in this weekend. A friend of someone in my dorm, lives just outside of the city centre in Glebe, has a spare room so I'm moving in with her. Very excited, I'll get to have my own room for a few weeks ... read more
1st week in Sydney
Published: November 8th 2011Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Kings CrossWow, can't believe I've been in Sydney a week already, it's flying by. I went to Bondi and loved it, although did get cold as quite windy. Lots of surfers there so was trying to pick up some tips. Can't wait to go back. Thought I'd be spending all my tine at the beach but I love just walking around finding new places and sitting in the gardens reading and relaxing. Actually starting to learn my way around the city now so don't always need my map anymore which makes me feel less like a tourist and more like I'm actually staying here for a while. (Still have to keep telling myself that I'm not just here for a short holiday and don't need to rush to do everything). Had my 1st Kangaroo burger the other ... read more
Now in Sydney
Published: November 7th 2011Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Kings CrossHad an 8 hr overnight bus journey to Canberra on Thursday (didn't manage to sleep so felt like I'd done a night shift next day). Arrived at 4am nothing open. Not even an internet cafe to pass the time. One of the guys the on coach was also staying in same hostel so we both walked there together to find it was closed during the night. Luckily the cleaner was there so let us in to sleep on the sofas. Later that day met with some people in local hospitals about MRI jobs. Not much going on in Canberra though and couldn't have stayed there for a few months which is what I've had needed to do so only stayed one more night before coming up to Sydney. Day 2 spent walking around the museum (pretty ... read more
Goodbye Sydney
Published: October 1st 2011Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Kings CrossDay 13, 24/9/11 Bit of a lazy day today, took a walk to Kings Cross to see what all the fuss is about as everyone says its amazing. There wern't much there apart from a big Coca Cola sign - the one in Piccadilly Circus beats it though. Weather wasn't brilliant so went back to Hostel, bought some Goon - which is Australia's 'nickname' for cheap wine - and went out in the evening. Day 14, 25/9/11 Not much happening this morning, it was raining so slept in and slobbed about the hostel. Rain cleared by afternoon so took a walk over Sydney Harbour Bridge to see the other side - North Sydney. Few shops and cafes and a small kids funfair but a lot was closed as it was a Sunday. Skyped Mum, Dad and ... read more
