Where are we again
April 20th 2007

From Denham we enbarked on another 5 hour road trip up to Coral Bay. This included a quick stop off at a place called Shell Bay. As the name suggests, Shell Bay is not made of sand but is made up of millions and millions of little cockle shells which are a brilliant white in colour. The bay was stunning, the whiteness of the shells together with the blue water and sky was amazing. As we drove to coral Bay we noticed more and more dead kangaroos on the side of the road, we think there must have been a roo massacar each night. Kangaroos are not exactly small and if we had hit one it would have made a real mess of the car so we think most of the killings would have come ... read more

April 18th 2007

We left for Monkey Mia with a smashed window and feeling a little disheartened. My god this was one hell of a trek, it took about 5hrs to get there and the areas seemed to get more and more sparse. We would drive for hours and not see another town, maybe the occassional cattle station but that was about it. We stopped at a road house to get fuel, this was possible the busiest little place. We recon it was a real little gold mine as it was the only petrol station for miles. Weirdly, everyone that worked there were from the uk!! We had decided to stay in a little place called Denham which was about a twenty minute drive outside Monkey Mia. Denham was a one street town but had all you needed ... read more

We arrived safe and sound at our next destination, this was a place called Geraldton. We only stopped here to break up the journey. At first glance the town seemed really nice, it had a real local feel, but the more we looked around the more it seemed as though it was full of crime. We wanted to stay at the YHA, but when we arrived we found that reception was shut, so we went and slept on the beach for a couple of hours. When we went back we were told there were no rooms, typical! We were told to try another place called Baltavia Backpackers, so we headed off in hope there would be room as these were the only two places we could really stay. We had checked into probably the strangest, ... read more

We left Perth around midday a little nervous but mostly excited about our road trip. Our first stop was a little town called Cervantes to see the Pinncales. Our trip took around three and a half hours and was fairly univentful, we were quite suprised at how wasy it was to find our way. This was Jo's first experience at long distance driving and as those of you that know Jo know that she can only just find her way out of Southampton. Either that or she runs out of petrol!!! To help pass away the time (as we lost radio signal about an hour into the journey) Sarah came up with the game Who Am I? For those of you that dont know this game you have to think of someone famous either an ... read more

Where are we again
April 5th 2007

We had a good flight to Perth, but would you believe it took 4 and 1/2 hours to get there, Australia is just so big. You wouldn't think you could travel for that long by air and still be in the same country. Sarah was there to meet us, it was so good to see her. As we gazed out the window of the car during the journey from the airport to where Sarah lived in Padbury we could really notice just how dry it was, especially compared to Sydney. We went with Sarah to pick up the kids (Ben and Libby) from school, they were just the same as when i had last seen them in England although they had grown so much, Ben was nearly catching up with me and Libby had seemed ... read more

So we thought we would have a day away from the big smoke and head out to the country aka the Blue Mountains. Some friends had been on a trip with Oz Experience and had a great day so we decided to book the same tour. We had to meet at the Oz office. Now the clever thing to do would have been to find out exactly where it was previous to the morning of departure, but we decided to guess! This resulted in what felt like a 3 mile run as we had got off the train at the wrong end of the street and were running late. We were determined to make the bus and ran as fast as our little legs would take us, As Jo spyed the bus, sarah ran out ... read more

Whilst we were in Sydney we were lucky enough to be here for the celebration of the Harbour Bridge's 75th Anniversary. As part of the celebrations our hostle had decided that everyone would dress up in their country's colours and because of this were approached by the Daily Telegraph to feature in an article. A handful attended the photoshoot which took place in Kings Cross. England, Ireland, Australia, Sweeden and Canada were all involved. They chose a picture for the article, which was entitled 'International Guests join the party' Our ugly mugs where slap bang at the front, black and white is so forgiving! There was even a quote from Jo, the article read 'Joanna Fielder from England said she had been delighted to learn she would be in own for it "This is a ... read more

After a week in Sydney we had well and truely settled into the backpacker life, its alot like being back at college again, drinking, meeting new people and generally having a laugh (of course at college we also worked very hard!) Working on reception was really easy and we split the six hours between us. General duties were checking people in and out, keeping computer updated and doing the laundry, aswell as being the local tourist information. We were quite surprised at how much we knew about Sydney already. Aside from this, in all honesty, the majority of our ime was spent chatting, spinning around on chairs and worrying about that evenings oufits. Speaking of outfits, when we arrived in Sydney we had very little suitable for wearing out as going out here was very ... read more

The flight over was a little eventful and the one thing we knew would get us through our 9hrs was the T.V. Would you beleive it both of ours were broken, we were devestated!! and to top it off we had possibly the worse turbulance we've ever experienced. It was quite comical watching Sarah and the lad next to us trying to drink their tea whilst riding a roller coaster. Back to the T.V's the air stewards had tried on a number of occassions to get them working but it was just not happening. As one was trying we hit bad turbulance and to our shock he said "I dont think it really matters coz it looks like we're all going to die anyway"!!! We couldnt believe he said it and burst out laughing. Needless ... read more

I know you were expecting our next blog entry to be Sydney, but we just had to tell you about one more incident in Bangkok. The majority of travellers that have been to Bangkok will know that aside from bartering with the tuk tuk drivers, there is another way to get a cheap ride. When Claire arrived we decided to spend the day sight seeing together. We wanted to go to the Floating Market and to see a few sights along the canal. We jumped in a tuk tuk and were taken to a back alley ticket agent which was just a box with a window, in the middle of the street. What he offered us was completely pointless and totally over priced, so we went back to our tuk tuk driver who was waiting for ... read more
