The day started off hot again and I'd worked up a good sweat by the time I'd packed up and loaded all the gear on the bike. Queanbeyan to Batemans Bay As anyone who's lived or worked in Canberra will be aware, there is only one way to get to the coast from the Canberra area and that is to head straight to Batemans Bay. Unfortunately for me, it seemed that everyone in Canberra had the same idea as me and was heading for the beach to escape the heatwave. The road was full of cars and speedboats. This wasn't too much of a problem on the good highway sections of the route, but when I reached the Clyde Mountain stretch it suddenly became a different story. Clyde Mountain is a very steep downhill road with ... read more

From Ballina we arrived in another small seaside town called Nambucca Heads. We found a motel here offering fantastic views over the bay below, and as it was another hot day Nancy set about sunbathing by the pool and i went wandering down to find the beaches. I under-estimated the heat of the sun and as i got a bit lost on my way back (i did have a map, but in my defence Australians tend to pick and choose which roads to have signs for), feared i'd die of sunstroke. In the end i got away with just a really burnt face. On my travels i stumbled across a graffiti wall. A place where people come to paint their messages and leave a mark on the place. They should try this on Canvey Island, ... read more

Hervey Bay The drive from 1770 was rubbish it was absolutely pelting it down, the roads were a bit more interesting though as we weren’t on the main highway, it took a bit longer though and we arrived in Hervey Bay at around 3ish.. Managed to book into a nice hostel own bathroom and TV/DVD :).. Went to the cinema in the evening to see ‘Four Holidays’ which is really good called ‘Four Christmas’ back home though I think?? Did a bit of shopping whilst there and hit the beach for a bit a really nice place, quite small.. Found a bar the last night and ended up doing the pub quiz with a couple of randoms who it turned out were as good as me and we came 2nd to last haha.. Gympie The drive ... read more

Chris and I drove down to Narooma for an extended weekend where we stayed at Jess' grandparent's beach house, called Illawong II with her and Will. We spent our days flying a kite at Narooma Surf Beach, mastering our skills at both swooping those lying comfortably on the sand and landing the kite gracefully in another person's hands. The boys and girls competed in a sandcastle building contest which the girls clearly won. Nights were spent battling it out for the title of Ultimate Boardgame Champion. Games included Cranium, Scrabble, Squatter, Balderdash and Monopoly. Jess came out with the title but it was a close match and there will definitely need to be a rematch sometime in the near future. Chris and I also found this "really good," meaning the best we've seen so far in ... read more

14/12/08 = Christmas Carols in Narooma Was a really sunny day in Eden yesterday, so woke up really excited to check out beautiful beach. Hopes completely dashed when rolled over to sound of rain again and real howling wind. Bitterly cold as opened van door and had to run to toilet just to make it in one piece. Got back into bed and decided to treat the bad weather as it should always be treated on a Sunday....by getting under covers and snoozing for a couple of hours. Re-awoke (pretty sure that's not a word) at 10am to no rain, but still v.bad wind. Got shower (still loving the clean feeling), had breakfast, and by time were both ready, was midday anyway. Went to killer whale Museum = pretty big deal out here and main famous ... read more

It was blowing this moring, the rain coming down sideways, and we were looking outside wondering if we would be able to make it to the island. We did not recieve a call from the charter, so after a game of ball toss with Monty the dog, we made our way into town to rent some wet suits. As we were walking into the shop, the mobile rang and we got final confirmation that Montigue Island was not a destination for this trip to Australia. Our first denial. We made our way to the boat, to see what may have been. After a refund, and some shopping in town, we went back to the house and watched the weather change and change. We got on the computer in the afternoon and gave Sue some lessons on ... read more

We were getting ready for the snorkel trip this morning when we got the phone call, it was a no go. The exit to the harbour was too difficult to get out of because of all the water coming in the entrance. So, we were all up pretty early and wondering what to do next...then the rain began, and it came and came. Penny went back to bed, I tried to keep busy with some reading. Later in the morning we rebooked the trip for Sunday morning. Rainy days mean inside stuff. Being in the country, it meant it was time to catch up on reading. Later in the afternoon, it had dried enough that we took the dog out for a walk. As we went down the driveway, there was a wallabie sitting at the ... read more

Today was a lazy morning, with nothing really planned for the day. I was playing ball toss with the dog in the morning and enjoying the view outside the house. Penny came outside and while she was getting cozy on the bench, noticed a couple wallabies bouncing on the hill opposite the house. She got her camera and the binoculars and we watched them for about 10 minutes. After that fun, we went into the town and did some more shopping. While in town, we went to a boardwalk to take a stroll and saw some big rays floating in the water, very cool looking! We have decided to skip going south as we have seen all these animals here now and will go up to Cairns on Tuesday. Later in the evening we went down ... read more

Our morning started with a bird serenade, very early in the morning. Country living :) We wandered to the porch and had a good look at the ocean while enjoying a morning water. The dog was being very active, so took it down to the beach for a ball toss and a swim. There are two beaches here, one that you reach by car called Mystery Bay. It is called Mystery Bay because a captain landed his ship here one day 100 years ago and never returned to it..big mystery. After the look around, we returned to the house and prepared for a drive to an historical village called Tilba...it exists because of the gold mining that happend in this region ages ago. After that, we had some lunch in Narooma, then booked a snorkel trip ... read more
