24 May 2012 Day one in Merimbula as mentioned in the previous blog was a quiet day in the park, I unloaded the bikes off of the back of the van for the two older kids Tayla asked me to put the training wheels on her bike so she could ride, I had them packed away somewhere I just needed to find them however she got tired of waiting and just took off, suppose that’s one way to get her to ride on two wheels. In the arvo the girls wanted to go for a swim in the pool, now we were not even 100 kms over the Vic border so it was not quite the Queensland tropics, I think it was about 15 deg outside the pool and lucky to be that in the “heated ... read more

After spending two nights at Lindenow and getting some more stuff organised we were off to Merimbula, we got away a bit later than we would have liked I thought I better get that new battery before we ended up stuck in the middle of nowhere needing a jump start, and Mandy got some much needed supplies of the food and alcohol variety. We left Lindenow/Bairnsdale at around 11.30am with 300 odd kms to do before dark, was not to keen driving unfamiliar roads at night with the van attached. Bairnsdale to Orbost was a pretty easy run, but after going through Orbost the road got a bit windier and the hills steeper, but they were no match for the mighty Jeep, it powered up and down the hills pulling the nearly 3 tonnes with ease ... read more

Next stop was a small township called Metung, a couple of hundred miles up the coast. Rained for most of the day, some mountains and plains, relatively uneventful (plus I slept most of the way)! Metung itself only has one restaurant and one pub (which closed when we left) though the surrounding countryside was beautiful (Metung is on the shore of a massive lake system). Today we drove another 200 miles up the ocast to a place called Merimbula, rich forest all the way. It was very much like driving through the forest in the Lakes, but over 200 miles of it (continuous)! Again, it rained all day. Apparently Sydney has had one month's of rainfall in one day today (one in a hundred year's event). Not sure what will be there when we arrive in ... read more

Wow! Merimbula is gorgeous! I am keeping a list of wonderful places and Merimbula flew straight onto the list. It’s the perfect holiday spot: there are be-oo-tiful beaches, funky little shops, plenty of places to walk/cycle and things to do and see. It’s got a very relaxed vibe and everything closes at by 5pm on the dot. We did some shopping, exploring, fishing (of course), cycling… and spent lots of quality time at the beach. We decided to just randomly park our van in a quiet street both nights, so our morning routine consisted of breakfast on the beach, a swim/snorkel in the ocean, a beachside (free but cold!) shower on the beach and fishing (of course). We also tested out the local cinema (we’d recommend “Gone” if you like thrillers), treated ourselves to a Malaysian ... read more

It has been a while sorry but I have been really busy. James and I started School of the Air. It is really cool. Our teacher's name is Ms Den Ellson. All her lessons have been videod and she sent us the videos of all our work. She changes herself into koalas and puts fireworks on the screen. We have to video ourselves reading and stuff and email it to her. James keeps showing off. When I am trying to do my video he gets in the background and says cheese and stuff. We have been to Narooma. That town is really pretty. They have a bike track that goes all the way past amazing beaches to another town. We rode 16 km. I can now use my gears to ride up and down hills. On ... read more

16 - 19 March 2011 Back on the road! First stop: Pretty Beach in the Murramarang National Park. Murramarang is one of the nicest national parks we have been in. The beaches are so pretty and the bushland is beautiful and just has a different feel to it. Our first night in the camper was a success. We were super comfortable and I even found myself curled up on the lounge reading a book that night once all the boys were asleep. We had a bit of rain but Alex still managed a surf and I took the boys for a long walk along the beach and rocks. Bawley Point is an awesome place and we decided it would be a great place to bring up the family or perhaps a holiday house... Next stop: Merimbula. ... read more

The weather was kind to us today and we set off to head to Edan with our sight set on the Whale museum. The short journey was uneventful and we drove down to the Fishermans wharf to check out the trawlers and boats. Interesting that we found Ruby's boat moored there. The wander through the Whale museum was great, with the history about the Killer Whales herding other whales into the bay for the Whalers to kill them. The reward the Killer whales received was the tongue and lips of the slaughtered whales. One particular Killer whale appeared to have a great bond with Humans and was the leader of the pack. They returned each year to do the same job, and the hearding ceased after Tom (the leader) was found dead washed up in a ... read more

Another morning spent wandering Bega, while the van brakes and rear view camera were checked out. We managed to leave Bega at around 1:30pm with things going ok, with a new wheel bearing in the left hand rear wheel of the van. The trip to Merimbula was not long, but the brakes began playing up after a few kms, very annoying!, good to have the rear view camera working though. It was raining as we set up in Merimbula, but our practice in this task has paid off, and we certainly have it down to little wasted time, even the reversing into the site must be impressive with the use of the hand held radio by Karon and Rick following the instructions we have yet to have any disputes in the process. Our observations of the ... read more
