An invitation to a 60th Birthday Party was all the excuse we needed to take a welcome weekend break away. Especially when the party was being held in one of our favourite coastal towns, Merimbula on the Sappire Coast. Merimbula is roughly a 3 hour drive from Canberra via Cooma, Nimmatabel and the Brown Mountain. After decsending the mountain the drive through Bemboka and Candello is pituresque. We have enjoyed many weekends in this pretty town and have been lucky enough to get 'up close and personal' to some humpback whales on a previous trip. This time around we partied with the Howker family and friends to celbrate Dave 60th birthday. The celebrations took place at the Merimbula Wharf Restaurant, followed by the hospitality of Craig and Kerryn at their home in Tura Beach. We found ... read more

Bags packed, my time in Europe was up. It was snowing below 1000m and much too cold for my thin summer clothes, my much maligned extremities were crying out for warmth. A last minute baggage check revealed I was massively overweight! According to Qantas regulations, some 300 Euro overweight. This ‘surfboard friendly’ airline has an allowance of 20kg when travelling economy class Europe to Australia. They check surfboards in as normal luggage and whack you with a 30 Euro surcharge for every 1kg over your 20kg limit. Although I had left some heavier items to be posted across at a later date, I still estimated I was carrying about 30kg. Not excessive you might think? Several phone calls to the airline prior to departure failed to improve the situation, so it was a stressful ride to ... read more

Rach... Ian drove us out of Sydney in our rented Toyota Corolla. It appears that the controls for the blinkers and the windscreen wipers are reversed on Japanese cars, so although the navigation was flawless, junctions involved much squeaking of dry rubber on glass, and accompanying swearing. Thank God it never rained. Sydney’s suburbs hardly fizzle out before Woollongong starts. Woollongong is a massive industrial city, and everyone who lives there must surely be peeved that Sydney always steals their thunder. After Woollongong things finally start to get more rustic, and by the time our hunger pangs kicked in, we found ourselves in a pleasant fishing village, which provided a suitable venue for our lunch. Our target for this first day of driving was a seaside resort called Bateman’s Bay, which sounded from the guide ... read more

Tuesday 30th January Just had two lovely days up at Merimbula and we’ve never been as sad at leaving a place than we did here. With hindsight, we should have booked at least one week in this coastal town as not only is there plenty of restaurants, but a couple of supermarkets are nearby for groceries as well as several shops worth a wander around. The best part though has to be the beaches, and our favourite was Short Point beach where it was peaceful and quiet except for the waves on the shoreline. There are rock-pools here and the formations of the rocks which the ocean has lashed for probably millions of years has formed some unusual shapes and features. Also, we have found that there is free car parking almost everywhere we have visited ... read more

Just in case you miss the last paragraph below... we’re cutting a month off New Zealand (although we still have 2 months there), postponing Thailand indefinitely, heading home on 20 December for Christmas and then heading back out to Whistler on 30 December for another month of skiing!! Wilsons Prom Wilsons Promontory National Park was another last-minute addition to the itinerary. Dawn and Eugene particularly recommended it and was certainly one of the most beautiful parts that we’ve seen of Australia. It’s the Australian mainland’s southern most point…and pretty much the only thing directly south of it is Tasmania. On the way down to the Prom, we happened upon a winery which turned out to be the most southerly in Australia. This, we figured, pretty much obliged us to buy a bottle, so we did and ... read more

Further down the coast I stayed in a place called Merimbula (all of you must go and buy big maps of Australia as these placenames probably mean nothing to you...) The hostel was a 2 minute walk to the beach. How perfect is that. On my first day I got a bus to Bega and went to the Bega Cheese factory there. I tried so many different types of cheese and ate alot of it! mmmm :) I bought the best cheese ever, it was made with pesto...oh yes... and you got to walk into a certain part of the factory and watch them make the cheese...haha i loved it! Day two in Merimbula I got another bus but this time going south to Eden. Here I went to a whale museum. There was a big ... read more
