Well here we go again, a blog to cover our "Gray Nomad" journey. We have had the Caravan for 4 years and the Nissan Patrol for about the same time. At last we managed to leave home on the 7th Feb 2011. During Karon & Rick's travel we will take our time to follow our journey at our speed and our time. This part is basically a shake down to check out the van and tow vehicle, to iron out any challenges or problems. Also to maybe redistrubute anything we may not use in the 8 weeks along the way. We will be back in Sydney in or around 2nd to 8th April. As per last blog we will publish some photos.... read more

Travel Days 32-36 Since my most recent posting about four days ago (Friday from Sydney), I have driven down from Sydney (with my Australian friend Jon and his Thai wife Kung) to Tura Beach which is a beautiful spot on the beach surrounded by Merimbula National Park (the largest national park in New South Wales). The region along the coast is referred to as the "The Sapphire Coast". Jon's parents have a retirement home on the beach here since ten years ago and they stay here full time after living in Sydney for many years. Jon and Kung have several weeks of vacation from work in Bangkok and have been visiting friends in family in Sydney before renting a car and driving down to Jon's parent's home in Tura Beach last Saturday. Jon has been extending ... read more

Well I have had a bit of a change of plans. After reviewing my trip I think I wont make it to the cape in time before the wet season. The fishing down here is crap because its still cold. Sooooo I have decided to leg it straight to Cairns and go up the cape from there. Will spend about a month up the cape and around Cairns then head back down the East coast and visit everyone I said I would. This way I get the warmer water coming back down and should be more fun and gives me more time up the cape. Today was meant to be raining all day but the weather was perfect so went for another dive but still no bloody crayfish!!!! and now have a bloody sunburnt face!!!! Will ... read more

Well I have to say everything has ben pretty smooth sailing so far. Bright and 2 months in the snow was awesome ( Thanks Johnny for the best pizza's ever!!). I guess the real trip has now begun. I left Sale after spending a few days with the family on the 31st August. A big thanks to Ryan for helping me get the last things sorted on the Troopy. The trip up was easy but sheesh the fuel consumption is a lot more now that the beast is fully loaded. Getting about 18L per 100klms at the moment. As you will see from the pics I got the most awesome camping site and only 90 bucks for 5 days. Whales pass by in the morning but have yet too see them as am usually out fishing ... read more

Lakes Entrance to Pebbly Beach, 8th to 11th April 2010 The four hour drive to Lakes Entrance from Melbourne took us through some small towns and very dense woodland. Lakes Entrance is a town based around several lakes at the point where they meet the sea, and is also set at one end of 90 mile beach. We checked into the YHA Riviera Backpackers, the accommodation is arranged into units and we were placed in the one next to the weird guy who was demonstrating what a cuddle was, as if you didn’t know! What is it with hostels and weird guys? Lakes Entrance is a popular fishing resort and a large hub for many of the fishing boats of the area so therefore we thought it only right that we try some of the local ... read more

Day 25. Well we were about due for an unremarkable day and this was probably the first where nothing of major, historic note happened! However, that doesn’t deter us from talking about our day but you might want to grab a pillow in case you nod off! We moved on from Mallacoota this morning, the birds were singing, the pelicans were out in the estuary, the sky was blue and we could hear the ocean waves crashing in the not too far away distance. We wished the 3 brothers (our next door campers) well with their boat adventures and as we were driving out came across young Isabelle and her granddad Tony who very kindly gave us one of his cards so if we do ever make it back near Port Albert we can look them ... read more

After hanging out a few more days after the wedding with everyone in Jervis Bay, we headed south down the coast about 5 hours to a beautiful spot we had been before, Merimbula. Merimbula is on the the Sapphire Coast and is about hour north of the border between New South Wales and Victoria. We stayed for 5 days at the Merimbula Beach Caravan Park which is directly overlooking a quiet little beach. You can rent some really great cabins there if you don't have a caravan, tent, etc. and they are a pretty good deal. The campground has 2 pools, tennis courts, cooking facilities, arcade, little cafe - all for $26 a night. We didn't do alot when we were down that way - think everyone needed to relax a bit after the wedding, so ... read more

Merimbula was a good choice for a sunshine and sea base for a few days. The Merimbula Beach Holiday Park on Short Point was all we hoped it would be, except for the couple of grey days and the couple of torrential downpours. It wasn't their fault that we didn't use the pool 50 metres from our luxury cabin or swim off the stunningly beautiful and varied beaches around the town. Merimbula's got the hard hitting surf beaches both sides of the estuary. Dip your foot in and the undertow tries to drag it to New Zealand. 'Never Swim Alone'. Protected by a sand bar or the cliffs, other beaches are more benign, either with the odd black swan cruising across a lake or with windsurfers catching the breeze. Red rocks - mini Ulurus? - reminiscent ... read more

Day 11 Sunday 8 Feb Bairnsdale to Merimbula The cool of a new day. Under 20 degrees. The people I met around the caravan park this morning mainly long term Aussie vacationers going from Brisbane to Tassie or vice versa- were all relieved that the freak temperatures of yesterday were over, but like everyone were still anxious about the bushfire situation. The witness reports in today’s Melbourne Herald- Sun really brought home the horror of it all, which we were lucky to have missed. The death toll is mounting and many fires are not yet ‘contained’. The Princes Highway, unbeknown to us, was closed around Traralgon/Sale, maybe a couple of hours after we had passed through yesterday. Thanks to Ivor and Helen who finally got us to respond to their calls to see if we were ... read more

Hello from Merimbula. Arrived yesterday from Batemans Bay to a glorious sunny day. It will be short lived though as the weather is turning again! The trip was again hilly and winding but the X5 did it really easily. By the time we get home we will have done close to 15,000 klms and still holding at less than 15 litres per 100 klms. Well, it's time to come home as the weather has been much better in Melbourne recently. In fact, we should be there by Wednesday 13th all being well. We've booked to see Andre' Rieur on Saturday 15th and are really looking forward to it. Batemans Bay Another gem! We have noted a number of places that we will return to and this is definitely one. It's a nice size with beaches, river, ... read more
