Jervis Bay is a pretty special place. It's got (offically) the whitest sand in the world, stunning blue water, a resident population of bottle nosed dophins, sea eagles and, in the winter, humpback whales. Forget exactly how big they said it was, but it was one of those stats involving how many times you could fit Sydney harbour into it. It was about three and a half times or something, so big by anyone's standards. We stayed at the north end at a place called Callala Bay, which, when we did the dolphin watching trip, was pretty much were we ended up seeing them. There were plenty of boats and creeks for the old boy to explore (Myola was a favourite), so he was as happy as a sandboy. And Crum could pootle about accumilating shells ... read more

It felt a bit strange to be leaving Byron Bay after spending quite a bit of time there the last few months, but the weather had turned a bit rainy again, so time to hit the road. We drove halfway back to Wollongong stopping in Cresecent Head for a night, and then made our way to Brett's aunt and uncles, Shelly and Dennis' place, yet again. We are definately lucky they keep letting us come back! After a few days in Wollongong and catching up on a few things we needed to do, we all headed down to Jervis Bay to the house my parents had rented for the last month of their trip here in Oz. We had a really good weekend - the weather was great and the area is really beautiful. It has ... read more

Getting to my hostel in Jervis Bay was a sweaty affair! I arrived to a town close to Jervis bay with long distance bus from Sydney and had to wait couple of hours for local bus. Since I didn't know where exactly the hostel was I trusted the bus driver and he dropped me off in the wrong village and I had to search without finding the hostel. Called the hostel couple of times before they picked up and got to know it was in the previous village I passed with the local bus so had to walk 3 km with my backpack and food bag in hot sunny weather before arriving sweaty to a real estate dealer who had 6 beds in an apartment behind their office ;) After getting a shower and freshed up ... read more

We spent St. Patrick's weekend camping in Jervis Bay, New South Wales, a national park along the Eastern Australia coast. After celebrating our favorite holiday early at Scruffy Murphy's in Sydney and then waking up early enough to run 10 blocs to see the Bridge and Opera House, we drove 3 hours to the Park. This was my first camping experience and I was excited to meet the Aboriginal community that lived in the area and were organizing our camping trip. Much to my dismay, it ended up raining for the majority of the weekend and was much colder than I ever expected. While on a walk with one of our guides, Unlce Barry, we got caught in a downpour and even though I was wearing a raincoat I was eventually soaked through. Needless to ... read more

Jervis Bay is lovely. After a drive to the large botanic gardens we paid for our campsite at the national park gates and headed to the campsite which is in a forest right by the beach. It is very wild - toilets but no electricity. There are 'wild' kangaroos but they are very used to people so very tame. The birds similarly are fearless. The beach is of gorgeous white sand with very clear water. There are loads of the strange scribbly barked trees. In the evening I decided to go for a forest walk at twilight armed with my torch to look for nocturnal creatures. I went a bit further than intended and it became very dark very quickly. It was a bit more scary in the forest than I had anticipated. I got ... read more

SAT 28th JANUARY Took the 3 hour drive from Sydney to Jervis Bay in our beast of a machine, the 3.6litre Holden Calais which is an absolute doddle to drive. Its basically a Vauxhall Omega but with a much bigger engine which is also an automatic…something we’re not used to and was very worried about driving. However, within the first day of driving it around Graham has got used to it no problem and is finding it a dream to drive with his back/leg problems as there is no need to constantly use the clutch because its automatic. It also has the added benefit of it having cruise control, something we’ve not had in our cars before and so as the police out here are so keen on catching speeding motorists, this eliminates the worry of ... read more

It's a holiday weekend in Australia to celebrate the Queen's birthday (should we not get a holiday in the UK for this reason??) so we took off on our first Australian 'road trip'. We drove from Canberra out towards the edge of the Snowy Mountains (which are not yet snowy), through Cooma and then down towards the far south coast of NSW. We stayed a night at a nice little motel in Eden, and then drove all the way up the coast to Jervis Bay where we stopped for a few days. We went whale watching (and saw some humpback whales and dolphins), went walking in Boogeree National park (beautiful sea views, crashing waves, pouring with rain), and visited some really beautiful beaches (although it was not exactly beach weather!). We also had dinner in a ... read more
