We met a guy called Greg at the hostel who disliked hippies as much as we did and he travelled around with us for a while. He had just broken up with his woman and fancied getting away from England for a while and, as he was into bodybuilding, he had come to LA, which is apparently their capital. Flying is the standard was of getting around America, but our funds wouldn’t stretch to that so we got the bus. After all the freeways of LA, the roads between cities are surprisingly narrow and quiet, although not in the league of the outback. As I said, everyone flies. We found a hostel and then did some washing at a laundrette nearby called 'Brain-wash'. This was actually a combined laundrette and restaurant, which was a neat concept ... read more

North America » United States » California » Los Angeles » Hollywood February 13th 1990

It would be criminal to go to Los Angeles and not visit Hollywood and Universal Studies, so we booked ourselves on a tour. On the way, we stopped off to see the Hollywood sign up in the hills for some compulsory photos. Once high up, it was frightening how obvious the smog was, as it hung over the city below. Universal Studios has a huge public area with loads of things to see and do, but the most interesting part is a tram ride round all the various film sets. We saw the house from Psycho, the town square from Back to the Future (and the Dukes of Hazard), a burning house, a flood, the parting of the red sea and a lake with a frankly laughable excuse for Jaws. Apparently the real one was being ... read more

North America » United States » California » Los Angeles » Venice Beach February 12th 1990

Now that we were flying domestic, United suddenly went downhill. You had to pay for the beer and you even had to pay for headphones in order to be able to listen to the movie! Tight gits! At least we didn’t have the custom’s grilling when we arrived. We weren’t going to take any chances of not being able to find a hostel in Los Angeles, so we had already booked into one at Venice beach. This place got Ian’s prize for the weirdest place we stayed, with arty paintings all over the walls, Beatles posters, four foot plastic monsters over the doors. Unfortunately it was full of obnoxious German hippies. Needless to say, we hated it. Los Angeles is just one huge great urban sprawl, going on and on and on and on, with little ... read more

North America » United States » Hawaii » Oahu » Honolulu February 5th 1990

The 5 February 1990 was a very strange and unique day for us. We enjoyed it so much that we decided to live it twice. We left Auckland on the evening of Monday 5 February and we arrived in Honolulu in the morning of Monday 5 February. The international date line meant that we jumped back to the beginning of the previous day and all those hours we lost each time we travelled east had been given back to us in one go. Confused, well so were we. We were not exactly welcomed to America with open arms. There were an horrendous number of questions, including "Are you a member of any subversive or communist organisations?" We were tempted to say "Nyet Comrade", but customs officials don't like smart-arses and would probably have bought us down ... read more

Horas después, empezó a moverse. ¡Pensé que alucinaba! Pero no. En un procedimiento perezoso, que debe haber demorado quince minutos, la persona que había bajo todo eso ... read more

well...my travels are now winding down to the final days... its been 7 months since i gave up the daily routine and schedules of the work world to embark on yet another journey of mine. i departed from the illusion of everybody else's reality to allow myself to be brought back into my own. my eyes have been given the pleasure of watching spring, summer, and fall run their course. a beauty of wonders that engulfed me on a daily basis. waking up and noticing the blossom of each color and the birth of life in nature, was always a great way to start my day. there were days on the road, that i would literally just sit and stare at this awesomely awesome view for hours at a time. very soathing, relaxing, and peaceful. definately ... read more

its been three weeks since butch dropped me off back home...and i'm still livin the dream... though, i must admit there are some pretty pie crazy jabbies down in these parts... so...i spent a week back home hangin with the fam and a few friends...did a nice little ceremony thing for JLG...those that were there, i truly appreciate it... then i caught a flight on down to the city of sunny orlando... and like an idiot...i tried puttin the word "plan" back into my vocabulary...but, again...shit falls apart...and living in 1989...its best to not plan...cause all they do is not pan out... so...Annie and Jason allowed me to spend a week with them in there place...it was a fun, drunken, yet relaxing time...pool and sun always add to a great day. finally ate at the gyro ... read more
