I am leaving for Costa Rica in a few hours. Last night I was thinking how I have been presented with these opportunities and these tools to survive and prevail through my life; not only this endeavor to Costa Rica but the return of my cousin Ashley from her semester in Spain. I have no choice but to believe these happenings are more than mere coincidences due to such precise timing and the lasting peace running through me they have both instilled. So, I am drinking my coffee and taking comfort in the absence of anxiety knowing that I am right on track and steady once more. Here’s to life learning, soul searching, adventure seeking, and artistic endeavor. ... read more

So I'm leaving in 6 days for San Mateo, and yes, one thing off the checklist. I've created this lovely blog, which apparently is more for "travelers" than crazy people who are staying in one cold place for an entire year to work. These past days have been fun, in anticipation of trips to REI for fleeces and trader joes for massive quantities of peanut butter. I haven't left any of you yet so I don't miss you---but I will very shortly... read more

So, now we are in Sheridan, Wyoming! It was a long day...we crossed into another time zone. We are now in Mountain Time. We still can't get my glove box open. Heidi drove a lot today. It was pretty sunny most of the day, but the roads were not good. It had snowed overnight, and the roads were still icy and snow covered in a lot of places. I don't drive very well in the snow, I tend to freak out a little bit. But we still made it quite far. We drove 450 miles, which was really good, given the road conditions. Heidi's plan was to make it to Billings, Montana, but that was another 100 miles. So...we'll see Billings tomorrow, and wave as we drive past it. We had a really tasty Christmas dinner ... read more

On to my next Adventure… Merry Christmas! I hope everyone’s holidays are going well! I’ve gotten all sentimental this Christmas season and thought I would send out a little life update and a few thoughts from my time with Carnival. As most of you know, I have finished my contract with Carnival Cruise Lines and am back on land for a good while. I had the time of my life the last few months I was onboard-a time of intense fun and equally intense hardship. The first evening I spent back with family they told me I had changed- matured, calmed, grew up a little. I’m glad they noticed because I feel it: like someone gave me a chill pill and taught me how to laugh again. I could rant and rave for eons about all ... read more

In 1970, Scott Tasca and I were 18 years old. Neither of us shaved more than once a week. We weren't grungy. We just didn't need to shave more than that. We both wore our hair long and bleached blonde. We wore bell bottom jeans that rode low on our hips and t shirts and necklaces of shells around the neck. We were surfers and freshman at the University of Rhode Island. We roomed together in Bressler Hall. Neither of us wanted to go to college, but we would have been drafted and sent to Viet Nam if we hadn't been accepted. Things weren't bad. There were lots of cute girls around campus who liked the surfer look. The food sucked but there was a lot of it. Classes weren't too hard. The climate of the ... read more

After an additional 3 inches of snow on Sunday, the plows came and added more to the pile at the end of the street. Now we have a total of almost three feet of snow. A white Christmas is beautiful, but are we ever ready for a cruise! All we hope for now is clear weather on Monday to take off for Tampa (via Dallas, N0T Chicago!) and arrive in time for the Outback Bowl so we can cheer Wisconsin on to victory. Mark is coming to help us beat one of the Gators nemeses, Tennessee. Then, it’s off to Ft. Lauderdale with Betsy and Frank for a reunion with friends, and the start of our main adventure aboard the Amsterdam.... read more

7 Days... I don't think its hit me that I am going to live in Italy for the next four months. I've spent a lot of time thinking about the people I'm going to meet, the places I'm going to go, and all the wonderful experiences I'm going to have. I hope I haven't set the bar too high for myself. I want to make the most of all the time I'm going to have there, I'm just not sure I know how to. I know this is going to be such an amazing experience for me, but I'm having a hard time leaving everything I know for the next 4 months for something completely strange. I'm nervous, but I'm pretty sure I can handle it. I'm going to miss so many things about home, including ... read more
