Never have I longed more for the feel of my children's arms about my neck. Never have I craved more the comfort of my own home, surrounded by familiar sights, sounds, and smells. Never have I desired more a simple slice of pizza fit for an Italian, a cup of tea fit for an Englishman, and a cheesburger fit for an American. For Adventure and Danger are sweet, And against them we may test our mettle; But the wine by the fireside is sweeter, And knowing one's place. I hope you have enjoyed reading this blog as much as I have enjoyed writing it. May Jehovah God strenghthen your faith, as he has surely strengthened mine during my 13 days of 'Seeing the Good Land."... read more

Hi everyone, the Queen Mary was excellent. After a reasonably short flight (5 hours) we arrived at LAX, flight was ok except for the ignorant oriental types sitting in front of us who put there seats right back and kept blocking our view of the movie. The onboard food was good though, being a domestic flight we had to pay for our beverages though. Our room was ready on arrival, so dumped our bags and proceeded to wander around the ship then straight to the bar for drinks. Room service that night which was good, then off to bed......been a long day. 25/9 Caught te local bus to a bar (Joe Josts) in the sticks, Jac saw a T.Shirt advertising the bar in Honolulu and decided he couldn't go home without one. That was an experience ... read more

Our last day at "The Happiest Place on Earth". Gates opened at 10am today thank goodness so we could sleep in a bit. Had assumed that because it was Monday, the crowds would be less than the weekend, and it would be a good day to go - but I think everyone else had the same idea 'cos man, it was BUSY!!! And it was drizzling slightly - I thought people stayed away in the rain (Nope!). Had a plan to revist all the favourites at least once then do some shopping, so we headed straight for Space Mountain - ooops, broken down. Back tracked to The Matterhorn to find the queue's a mile long, but moving quickly - until that ride breaks down. Not our lucky day.... Anyway the ride was soon up and running ... read more

Packers We did not post yesterday as there really wasn't much to post. We wanted to watch the Packer game and needed a down day anyway. So, we stayed a second night in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. It is just outside of Spokane, Washington. A local helped us with the town's pronunciation (think of apple core, then duh, then lean - altogether core dah lean). We found Paddy's with help from the hotel staff where every football game is guaranteed to be on one of their TVs. Upon arrival, we found the local packer contingent donned with Packer shirts and caps. They welcomed us and we all hollered, laughed, and cried throughout the game. Beers, food, and company were awesome. Unfortunately, the Packers lost so it wasn't quite as big a party as it might have been ... read more

Spent the day driving down the Oregon coast today. The weather was warm, however the fog decided to roll in as well. Pretty bizzare to have warm air and be surrounded in fog. Coastline is very reminicent of the Great Ocean Rd, with steep cliffs' and craggy rock formations. Although it was hard to see because of the fog. The highway is littered with little towns throughout much like the G.O.R., but they are a little more on the quaint and quirky side. The Great Ocean Rd shops are dressed up as run down little sea shanties and worth millions, whereas the one's on the coast here are real run down seaside shanties, and by the looks of them not worth much. There seems to be a lot of real estate and business'/shops for sale, probably ... read more

Suggested Listening for this Entry: Marshall Chapman's CD It's About Time.... It has very little to do with Memphis other than having a song that references Elvis and the Pyramid, but oh well. The CD was recorded live at the Tennessee State Prison for Women in Nashville, so there probably were some former Memphis residents in the audience. Suggested Food and Drink for this Entry: Tamales....I didn't partake of any while in Memphis or the Delta, but there were signs for restaurants serving them all over. Maybe a reader could explain to me the Mid-South's apparent fascination with tamales. If you visit the Peabody Hotel, you can have a drink that comes in a martini glass in the lobby bar. It's not really my thing, but the Peabody is a class joint that doesn't sell Beale ... read more

Suggested Listening for this Entry:”That’s All Right”, “Blue Moon of Kentucky”, and “Good Rockin’ Tonight” by Elvis Presley. Then go back and listen to Arthur “Big Boy’ Crudup’s original version of “That’s All Right”, Bill Monroe’s original 1940’s version of “Blue Moon of Kentucky”, and Wynonie Harris’ version of “Good Rockin’ Tonight”. Suggested Food and Drink for this Entry: Although nearly the same meal was suggested for the Rock N Soul Museum, go with one of Elvis’ favorites, a cheeseburger, fries and milkshake. With our Sun Studio tour continuing in the museum room above the actual studio, our tour guide hit the highlights of the studio’s blues and R&B days in the early 1950’s that included hearing snipets of “Bear Cat” and Howlin’ Wolf. Looking around the tour group, I could tell at least a few ... read more

Our trip started with driving up with Matt’s Dad, Ross, to Sydney. When the trip was booked back in March, the only flight available at the time we wanted to go was on AFL Grand Final Saturday. Following the stellar performance of Matt’s beloved Hawthorn Hawks, he knew from the outset of the finals that they would play at the Grand Final. As it turned out, we couldn’t watch it at the airport as the Grand Final finished at our earliest check-in time. We couldn’t stop at a pub, as Ross had to get back to Canberra for work. So the solution was found to stop at an airport hotel to watch the Final. We found a room which we could use for the day at the Hotel Ibis near Sydney Airport. We watched the game. ... read more

King, Howlin’ Wolf, Rufus Thomas, Junior Parker, Little Milton, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison. Suggested Listening for this Entry: Some Little Milton from his days on the Malaco Record Label in the 1990's and the early 2000's. Start with "The Blues is Alright", "Annie Mae's Cafe", "A Juke Joint in My House" and "She Know How to Wear a Hat". (A video clip from earlier in Little Milton's career is included at the end of this entry.) Suggested Food and Drink for this Entry: Anything you can smoke and cover in barbecue sauce. You’ll soon discover why. D.C. area blues guitarist Linwood Taylor once told me “it ain’t a party unless the cops come”. Well, my visit to Jim Neely’s Interstate Barbecue with Ips and the Player made me think of a twist on Linwood’s thought, “it ain’t a trip to a barbecue joint unless you leave covered in sauce”. ... read more
