Yesterday I returned home from visiting my sister at her college down in Mt. Pleasant. She wanted to see me before I made my trip over to Europe. The highlight of my visit was visiting the Cider Mill down there, it was pretty cool seeing how apple cider is made. The farm that makes the cider had other attractions as well, I took as many pictures as I could of the place. All in all it was a very nice trip, I was happy to see my sister before I go. I also know she appreciates it as well, she and Mom are still a little worried about me going to Europe alone. Well, stayed tuned for updates on my trip! Jon... read more

We are at the end of our time in LA now and Jem has experienced her first hostel! She wasn't a big fan at first but she didn't mind it too much. The first stop was Anaheim and Disneyland which was really nice but very tiring walking round a busy park dodging little (sometimes not so little) kids when our bodies think it is 4am! The motel was pretty nice and very close so had a great time. Next stop was West Hollywood and the Hostel! The entrance looked pretty dire and Jem wanted to go straight to Fiji or another hotel. With no flights available and a price tag of over $200 for anywhere else we stuck here. Luckily the room turned out to be really nice and that was all we were really going ... read more

It is the first day of school, and I'm in the cafeteria getting a late lunch. So far I've been on campus for 3 hours and all I've done is go to my pilates class. I don't teach until 6PM on Mondays. Sort of sucks, but not the end of the world. Anyway, the only thing open this late in the afternoon in the cafeteria is the grill. I'm sitting there looking at the menu and watching the lady take orders, and call out the finished orders. It takes be backs... She isn't old enough to be June, but this could definitely be The Worx. So the first week of classes went pretty well I think. I managed to have enough lecture notes for all of my classes and almost ran over in several of the ... read more

Friday- Day 90 When I finally awoke about 9am on Friday morning, Murt, Connie's stepmother announced that since this was my last day in Minnesota I should go and have breakfast of doughnuts at a special local place. Connie and Nora wanted to have a last day together and see Connie's own mother, Flo ( who came to visit us at Dolls Point about 4 years ago.) After that we went sightseeing around the district before dropping Rollie off at his golf club . More sightseeing and shopping...lunch and then we all got together to go to the baseball. Minnesota twins versus the Kansas City Royals in the local indoor stadium. Really interesting. About 20 family members there together to sing at half time. But I have to say that despite everything I really prefer cricket ... read more

Hi all, We are coming to the final day of our trip - boooo!! Las Vegas was cool, we are probably about even on the money, up a bit on Roulette and Dave finally sussed out the black jack which I could not get to grips with! All winnings were put to good use on new shoes!! We also managed to take in a show - Mamma Mia - fantastic (well I thought so, Dave is not really an ABBA fan!) Anyway just a quick note, we are now in LA where we fly from tomorrow so we are just having a relaxing night trying to pack all of our things into our back packs........having to choose what to leave behind due to some new purchases (not just me!!) Not that we don't love you all ... read more

The trip to Cut Off, Melanie’s version We had the continual breakfast at the motel, then set off on our next adventure! We went from Gretna to Raceland. At Raceland we went south on Louisiana Highway 1. We went south all the way to Grand Isle. Grand Isle is known for its fishing. There we got to see a truck drive into the water with a trailer on it. No the people in it did not drown or get wet; they had a boat on the back of the trailer. As they backed into the water the boat just floated off. On this trip to Cut Off we had a special mission. We drive down to the house. Poppy tells me to go Knock on the door. So I go over to the door and do ... read more

Picked up hire car in Seattle today and headed south. Driving in Seattle is like Sydney, skinny narrow streets that are all one way and linked with under and over passes. To make matters worse they all drive on the wrong side of the road!! Every time we go around a corner, i end up driving on the left hand side, not the right. Its the best way to discover that not everyone is friendly. Made it out of the city and made our way to the south of Washington state. The weather here has been hot for the last few days, about 30 deg, and none of Seattles famous wet and drizzly landscapes. Mt Rainer stood out quite visibly. We spent most of the afternoon at Mt St Helens. The whole side of the mount ... read more

Far out - we’ve been away two weeks already!!!!! Today we’ve decided to tackle the LA Highways again and head to Universal Studios which is approx one hour north in moderate traffic or three hours when it’s busy. Turned out to be a wise decision to go today as the traffic on a Sunday morning wasn’t too bad and we made it without any stops or dramas. At one point we counted 7 lanes per direction and some of the spaghetti junctions are phenomenal!!!! Steve's really getting the hang of this and absolutely loves his car - pity we can't bring one home... Did the guided Studio Tour at Universal first which was really cool. Our tram passed sets from heaps of familiar movies including Jaws, King Kong, Earthquake, War of the Worlds, Psycho, but best ... read more
