The New has fantastic climbing, and lots of mosquitoes. It was like Thailand without the heat. The only problem is that it is 6 hours away! I look forward to going back - or visiting it's sister - Red River Gorge. Junk Yard Wall twice, Endless Wall once. Enjoy the pics~... read more

Cannon was insistent that he wanted to go zip lining. If you aren't familiar with zip lining it is a blast. See the videos and photos to prove it. I was only going to pay for him to go but he kept calling me chicken. Truth was I wasn't sure he could handle it and have problems up in trees. I was proven wrong. He was a monkey in the trees and I had more fun than I have in a long time. We ran 10 separate zip lines ranging from 300 to 900 feet and were everwhere from 40 to 140 feet in the air. Wow. Save this URL and think about coming here on a vacation. www.rivermen.com... read more

3 Class V rapids 6 Class IV rapids and a but load of Class II and III. Sissys stay home. The boys took it on and had a blast. That said I was scared #$%less. Photos will have to be posted after the trip as they are on a waterproof camera but we jumped from cliffs. floated the river (intentionally) and paddled until we couldn't do it anymore. One thing that does motivate you is ROCKS. Big rocks and when your guide say swim left if you fall out on this rapids because on the right they call it "meat grinder" and they don't go in after you. I found out afterwards. He wasn't kidding. The Rivermen were great. Of 4 boats the only person who fell out was our guide during a class V. I ... read more

This day, I awoke before dawn, almost 10 hours after I had gone to sleep the night before. The sky was clear and so cold there was frost on my tent. The landscape was illuminated by an eerie light. The moon was in the part of its orbit where it is closest to Earth, so the moonlight was unusually bright. It was so bright that objects cast clear shadows. It was not bright enough to activate the eye's color receptors, though, so everything was black and white. I can see well in low-light conditions, so this light was bright enough that I could see perfectly well without a flashlight anywhere except heavy forest cover. I spent a few minutes just walking around in this unusual light trying to fully wake up. Finally, I got in my ... read more

Today is the day I raft the New River. I signed up for the trip with Wildwater Adventures, which is the oldest outfitter in West Virginia. While no raft guide will deliberately dump guests in the river and keep their job, a number will not go out of their way to keep guests in the boat either. They run riskier lines through rapids, which can provide a thrilling ride but also a harrowing one. I wanted a guide service that was known for keeping this type of risk to a minimum (the rapids are already risky enough!) Wildwater fit the bill nicely. They also have a great reputation for customer service. In order to take this trip, I had to deal with some personal history. Four years ago, I rafted this river in early summer, and ... read more

Unfortunately, we were off to a late start from Pennsylvania. When we got to our hotel the night before, my trunk refused to open. I had forgotten to tell R that my car key doesn't open the trunk door and that she needed to pop the trunk instead. When she tried to use the key, something got stuck and my trunk door wouldn't open (with our suitcases inside!). Luckily, my back seats pull forward and we were able to retrieve our suitcases -- although not without some difficulty since I had packed every nook and crevice of the trunk. And my largest suitcase was super-heavy, since, ummm, it's actually, literally, filled with stones. Okay, small rocks that I've collected here and there. Some from Alaska from when I went fishing at every body of water ... read more

Hawks Nest State Park is the West Virgnia’s version of visiting the New River Gorge without the assistance of the National Park Service. Set amidst an inn and banquet facility that more resembles a stark and cubic university administration building, the restaurant overlooks the gorge and a tramway that shuttles visitors to the river below for jetboat tours on the New River. Between the state park and Carol’s old high school near Winona, the scenery rarely changes from hilly mountain passes, rough and austere mobile homes, and a Baptist church about every 400 yards, or so it seems. “It’s the Bible Belt here”, remarks Carol. “I saw a Catholic church back near Glen Ferris.” “Yeah. The Italians (long “I” in her pronunciation) came here to work in the mines. See all the stone work on the ... read more

West Virginians are an affable and approachable bunch. So, coming from grumpy and aloof New England, I needed time to make the adjustment. However informal they are in appearance, the hospitality more than compensates. The mountain twang of their accent leaves me on the verge of letting out a violent chuckle. Conversations are prolonged, and many have taken in genuine interest in me and my visit here. The Mountain Laurel Restaurant in Fayetteville is under new management and undergoing renovations. Locals come and go during lunch and dinner. As I sat down at the bar and glanced at the menu, the owner came up to, welcomed, and invited me back for dinner, not having eaten lunch yet. That was before I got his name. Sean is a partner in the business and did not hesitate to ... read more

I booked four nights at a rustic mountain cottage, the New River. Doug and Sally have not been managing the facility for a year yet. As I pulled up off the single lane road and past the red barn mailbox, two dogs, close to a Golden Retriever, and an indescribable mutt of easily a dozen breeds, raced at me from behind a barn, both barking sternly. Naturally, my first reaction was to dive back in the car and try to defend myself with a can of mace to ensure they would not prance off with any of my internal organs. But, at second glance, they were harmless and simply there to greet me. The canine welcome became official when the larger pooch peed on the left front fender of my car. Now having been approved by ... read more
