It’s now been 4 weeks since we’ve been away which is hard to digest and I don’t fancy jumping on the scales anytime soon. Alarm was set for 8.00 am so we could have breakfast downstairs and be on the road by 9.00 am for the 60km drive to the ski resort town of Stowe. No traffic issues encountered so it was an easy drive to the Von Trapp Family Lodge. You may find that name familiar and you would be right. It was made famous by the movie Sound Of Music starring Julie Andrews. Well what I did not know until quite recently is that the movie is actually based on a real story and there is a real Captain Von Trapp from Austria who had 7 children who were taught how to sing by ... read more

Up around 8am for a quick bite for breakfast and we said farewell to the Holiday Inn Express at North Conway and hit the road yet again. One thing about our Chrysler 300S is that it vibrates so badly at speeds of 40 mph, 55 mph and over 65 mph so I’m guessing it needs a wheel alignment or something and is so annoying I have just adjusted to drive at a speed where it is not so annoying but it’s always there and it’s not just the steering wheel where you feel it as we have a dozen water bottles on the floor of the back seat and they just shake rattle and roll all day long ! We just did not have any time in our schedule to consider going to Avis to swap ... read more

https://www.heygo.com/aaronandpatrick Burlington was chartered in 1763 and named for the Burling family, who were pioneer landowners. Settlement began in 1773 with the opening of a sawmill and shipbuilding business. Burlington was a military post, and during the war of 1812. Battery Park was the site of several engagements between land batteries and British warships on the lake. In the mid-20th century the city’s economy changed from one based on manufacturing to one dependent on service industries, including tourism. Manufactures include aircraft armaments, concrete products, food service equipment, snowboards, plastic monofilaments, and maple syrup. From a renovated gas station in Burlington, Vermont, to far-off places with names we sometimes mispronounce, the journey that be... read more

There's been plenty of ups and downs the past five weeks. I almost blogged yesterday but I had a last function to go to. For over 10 years we've had an annual July 4 getaway that fell apart. I tried to save, salvage it but it wasn't happening. Then I tried to do something small, for myself. That fell apart too. Little did I know it might have been flooded out! Two small things held up over the vacation. One was my first small cruise. The cruise itself was wonderful. The city it happens in, not so much. I thought it would be smart to get an early time slot so I was a little tired going in. Burlington needs to grow and the only way it can do that is down existing roads. Overstaying a ... read more

The weather report for today was bright and sunny in the morning with thundershowers in the afternoon, so we wanted to get an early start because we had lots to do before the rain came. I say we wanted to get an early start, but in reality it was Sunday morning, and our first stop - Ausable Chasm - is only 30 minutes away, so there is no point in getting on the road until 8:30. These are the things I told myself as I rolled over and caught a few extra zzz's this morning. So we had a quick breakfast, and headed out at 8:30, right on schedule. We even stopped along the way to gas up the bike since we knew 1 tank would last us all day. Our first stop was Ausable Chasm, ... read more

Geo: 44.4758, -73.2132Off again, hoping to get to Burlington.Lots of driving, girls were good. Get just past the border and stop at Goodrich's Maple Farm to learn about how they make Maple Syrup. Very interesting. Then stop at Cabot's which is a cheese making place. The next stop was very surprising....Ben and Jerry's Icecream. I know many of you have probably had it, but I figured it was just another icecream. We did the tour at $4 per person, cheap enough but the tour itself was quite lame. Having said that, the video they show you about how the company was started, and then later owned by the Vermont people and then their commitment to the community, world peace and sustainable ingredients was really inspiring. Two young hippy boys that wanted to save the world, created the company. ... read more

We travelled north to Burlington through the White Mountains on Friday 13th. As we climbed up to the mountains we encountered drizzle and rain but we stopped for a rest in Bethel a small town of 2000 people and had a snack in a sandwich shop. Quaint little business and we wondered how the owner makes a living out of it, as the passing traffic disappears and the weather closes in. Lovely fresh BLT with local coffee blend. Passed Middlesex and Grantham on the way. Making the hotel was quite straight forward after we had a poor start in Concord NH mainly as I did not listen to what I was being told by my map reader. The evening meal saw St Louis Ribs mixed with Montreal coleslaw?? Yes it was different perhaps sauerkraut in it? ... read more

Geo: 44.4758, -73.2132We casually woke up this morning and had breakfast at the hotel. Even though our tire was fixed, we decided it would be a good idea to get a new spare tire considering we have 13 more days through the mountains, through rural little town America, across bridges, along coastlines and through big cities so we ended the tireless discussion and had the spare fixed. It took only 45 minutes, on a Sunday mind you, and off we headed to Burlington Vermont.Along the way, we detoured to a Western Town suggested by Roadtrippers.com a mile off of our route which was closed for the season. I am not sure what season it's open. One of us is missing something. So we stopped at a goofy little mini-golf and had ourselves a round and a ... read more

Geo: 44.4758, -73.2132This morning we visited the ski jump and bobsled facilities at Lake Placid. It definitely gives you an appreciation for the guts that those athletes have when you are out on the jumps and tracks. From there, we headed to Burlington, Vermont. We crossed Lake Champlain on the ferry from Essex, NY to Charlotte, VT, and drove into Burlington. We stayed at a campground that is on Lake Champlain, and 2 miles from Burlington via bike path.We took the bike path to town this evening and got caught in a brief rainstorm. Had a great time meeting the locals at the marina bar, and dinner off of Church St. in the row of restaurants in downtown Burlington.... read more
