So, I moved in with Chris and Christine during the month of July. They live in a great little house which is located in the North End of Burlington. I must admit, that I was a bit nervous about the location...I held my breath the first few mornings as I walked out to my car, wondering if it would still be in one piece or if I'd have a broken window or two that I'd need to deal with. Once I got through the first week, I realized that I had completely let my guard down and really enjoyed living in the North End. Although it is known for being a bit sketchy, I also found that there was a great sense of community. When walking/driving up and down the street the first thing I noticed ... read more

Last step of the Atlantic crossing is completed with the arrival in the US. It was actually quite a routine flight, but still the one I worried most about. There are many stories about big problems with immigration in the US, and although I believed I had filled all the required forms - but the final proof is to do it. So in the morning (after finishing the blog entry about the beautiful rainbow fight at 4:30 local time - jet lag!), I started preparing the flight from Sept-Îles to Burlington (both airports selected on their merit to have customs on the field and official status as 'Airport of Entry'). Of cousre, the internet and the computer were slower than expected, breakfast too longer etc - I got late. And noticed that the original flight plan ... read more

John had told me about the fall foliage in Vermont. I had to see it for myself. Marlyn tagged along for the trip. It was nice traveling with someone. Along the way we stopped for some ice cream at the Ben n' Jerry's facility.... read more

One of the greatest reggae bands ever is 'The Black Seeds'. They're from New Zealand, and I never got a chance to see them while I was over there. Lucky for me they did an american tour and played in South Burlington while Sandra was visiting from Germany. It was a great show and well worth the 5 hour drive. Katie (sister) accompanied us out there, and Sandra and I were able to meet up with one of our friends from New Zealand, Jenny, and we got to meet her baby, Rae. To top it off, at the end of the night we were able to hang out with the band and party a little bit. It was good fun...if you haven't heard of this band I suggest checking them out...... read more

J.P. & Claire ... read more

Preparing for a full 24 hours of travel tomorrow. It's my own fault, really. The true miser that I am, I picked the cheapest flight possible to Madrid which accomplishes two things: a 9 hour layover in London, and a bus ride from Heathrow to Gatwick. I have no idea what my mental state will be like at the end of all this. I plan to document everything. So here's hoping for the best...no flight delays, no customs issues, no visa problems, no one falling asleep on me...It's all going to go smoothly...oh yes.... Coming up next: ESPANA! P.S. "The Craigslist Killer"? Has anyone else been following it? Fuh-reeky.... read more

Greetings from home, Travel season is under way, and I will be on the road as of September 11th, 2008. It's probably not the most festive time to begin a two-month long adventure through Western NY (Syracuse, Buffalo, Rochester), Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. Regardless, there's only 150 High Schools, and 20 College Fairs between me and November 15th. img=http://www.insidehighered.com/var/ihe/storage/images/profiles/champlain_college/1782466-1-eng-US/champlain_college_medium.jpg It has been a busy week at the office getting everything scheduled, charging 1000s of dollars to credit cards for hotels and car rentals, and giving information sessions. Why do we do this crazy job we do? Because we love it.... read more

So we are in Burlington now- arrived on monday night about 10 pm . The train took 10 hours from NY! We had a frustrating time trying to get our transport out of NY booked. We found that the train we wanted to catch to burlignton was full so we then tried to get a bus- which would have been more expnesive and have taken just as long. we spent about an hour goign from train to bus station and then back again! We had already booked a motel in Burlingotn thinking it would be easy to sort transport! Anyway our motel here is really nice and it only costs about 33 quid a night- it has a small pool and free coffee and a bagel in the morning! On tuesday 29th we sorted our next ... read more

About 5 more weeks to go. Found a tenant for the house and I have started cleaning out old clothes and slowly moving personal belongings to the basement where they will live for the next 9 months. Still trying to figure out round-the-world tickets, not as easy and not as inexpensive as we thought. Karen has requested a sabbatical from work, so keeping fingers crossed this will be approved. We just finished a weekend retreat at Kripalu Yoga Institute in the Berkshires finding balance and learning about each other and ourselves. Announced my leaving at work this week which was received with feelings anywhere from surprise to no comment at all! Shopped for backpacks and am starting to lean towards a travelpack with shoulderstraps versus an all-out backpack that loads only from the top - we ... read more
