Today we went for a short hike in Bryce. It was pretty good, until it started raining, but even then it wasn't too bad. The hoodoos (the tall column-like thingies in the pictures) are even more impressive from below. In the second half of the way, we went for a scenic drive on Highway 12 (and I use the term highway very loosely) to Boulder, Utah, the most remote town I've ever seen. It's been said that it's the last town in the USA to receive mail via pack mule. The road to Boulder (the so called highway) was only opened [View Full Entry]

We got to Bryce Canyon National Park today. Apparently the fire there is still burning, but it under control. On the way we stopped at Cedar Breaks National Monument (trivia: the President can declare a national monument, but congress has to vote on national park status). Bryce is much higher than Zion (about 3000m compared to 1000m), and is much colder (I actually wore my fleece jacket), which I like. However, it's also stormy, and it actually rained on us today, and we even saw some lightning from far away (this is what started the fire a few days ago). Bryce [View Full Entry]

Mossy cave trail

July 7th Off to Bryce canyon. The trip started out with desert but after a while the landscape changed and we found ourselves driving through canyons and Very nice views and a relief after the desert. We did at some time have a funny experience - suddenly in the middle of nowhere there were hundreds of windmills on a hilltop, quite impressive. We could began to see the red rocks that we have seen on pictures of Bryce Canyon. Luckily the trip was not as long as we anticipated always nice when it’s that way round. We got an ok room [View Full Entry]

We left last night for Bryce Canyon. The drive took about 2 hours. What surprises me the most about Utah is how green South Utah is. When I thought of Utah I thought it would be desert. Parts of it are, but a big portion of it is a national forest. Bryce Canyon is beautiful. It is full of multi-colored rock foramtions. We took a three mile hike down into the canyon. We were able to hike through some caverns. We then had a picnic lunch in Bryce and went to another hike called the Mossy Cave. Surprise! It leads to [View Full Entry]

Spent some time at Bryce Canyon today. Nice park. The park is known for its hodoos, which you will see in the photos. The Navajo say that the cayote, who is known as a trickster, turned the people into stones. The park was full of pine trees and had great scents, and the weather was great. Called it quits early today as I didn't stop until late last night. [View Full Entry]

Another spectacular day. We started out early in the morning about 7 a.m. with a hike up the Emerald Pools trail in Zion - and when I say up I mean up! There are three sets of pools that are formed from runoff from the porous limestone cliffs and you climb like a mountain goat to all three of them. Our reward was being about the only hikers on the trail and then a serene breakfast at the top pool which we had to ourselves. And yes, Lauren, both your father and mother made it up with no problems - how [View Full Entry]
