Travels 4 2

Well, we have talked about it for years now at last we have taken the plunge. Call it "adult gap year", career break or mid life crisis, but the house is sold, possessions in store, sold, on loan, given or thrown away, many parties had and our old life on hold. Now we are making final preparations to head to the USA to purchase our new home ( an RV) and travel North, Central and Southern America or whereever the road takes us. Watch this space

We arrived in Beaune, parked up in a lay-by and cycled up to Mike’s house to assess the parking situation …….. It looked good(ish), so we decided to attempt to “dock”. Now, here is a sad fact……. The last time we were here, several years ago, and very much in the “pre-rig” era, Graeme had sized up the space, with regard to parking a 39ft (at the time) very much hypothetical vehicle; decided it would fit, and stored that information for future use. (At this point, anyone who can ever recall in the past seeing Graeme gazing at their drive must realise they had better look out!) We arrived a day before Mike and Anne-Marie, but they had told us to make ourselves at home. So, with only the usual booby traps in place; this ... read more

I know, I know, having not heard from us for 3 months, some of you then suddenly get 8 Blog alerts. You are not alone. I even managed to send them to myself. The Blog site suffered a serious gremlin attack. Whilst sneakily sending some of you the alert, it was telling me, “error, unable to publish”. I did what any normal computer-impatient person would do, and just kept hitting the send button….. 8 times apparently! It then published the Blog in some parallel universe, where it could only be accessed in a most convoluted manner…..but not by me, who, at this time, still thought it unpublished, and continued to hit that key. I then found I wasn’t the only one having a problem. Ali, the poor guy who runs Travelblog, was receiving many “help ... read more

Here we are, 3 months later At last, a Wi FI internet connection and a chance to send a blog. Knowing we would have limited internet access I have been writing blog notes as we travel, as from experience, I knew I would not remember what we had done or what to include. So at the risk of boring those of you we met up with in Jan I have left the content of the blog as it is, covering events from our return. With our now perfected expert timing our return to the UK was arranged only a week before our flight, on 23rd Dec. I thought Christmas had arrived early when I got 4 seats on the plane. Although, this was not just by chance but hard earned. Having noted prior to take ... read more

Our last night in the Rig was spent in the Jungle, which, after weeks in Wildwood, was really nice. . After a busy morning filling, emptying, refilling and sterilising tanks (for those of you who like the technical details, that’s the black, grey and fresh, a total of 160 gallons each time) in preparation for shipping. We eventually arrived at our last destination a little before dusk. This is a new site for Bernarr (our shipping agent) to work from, and he is trying to clear the land, as currently, it is still very jungly. It was a beautiful clear starry night. Graeme stepped outside and met up with an Armidillo, he called me out to see him but he had pottered off into the undergrowth . We could hear critters rustling around all around us. ... read more

I was not really looking forward to Florida, partly because it is the end of our journey here and we knew reality was, rather cruelly, going to intrude on our lives, (however Graeme spotted a hole in his reality and climbed through it, so we proceeded to ignore the essential pressing tasks required and continued our current lifestyle for a bit longer) and partly because I thought Florida full of consumerism, tourism, concrete and roads, not the environment I wanted foremost in my memory as our final RV experience of the US. Complete hypocrite that I am though, if this is where we had to be, I was slightly cheered by the lure of Theme parks and last minute outlet shopping before home, especially with the daily weakening dollar. We had been told St Augustine was ... read more

Due to several factors we didn’t spend a lot of time in New England, weather and RV park availability to name two New England consists of the 6 Eastern States, Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont and Rhode Island( tiniest US state) They are renowned for their beauty, especially during the “Fall” ( Autumn to us Brits) because of the spectacular display of the seasonal change of leaves People travel vast distances to see the colours. They are known as “Leaf Peepers” to the locals. There is a web site for leaf colour check which has a chart to tell you where the best colours are and when. It is beautiful but, as 2 people from Hampshire (Old), known as the county of trees this was not a new experience. We decided the area had been ... read more

Nova Scotia …… I have to say in all my travel planning and dreaming, Nova Scotia had never really entered my consciousness. As we were now poised to travel around the area, I began to give it some thought. The name Nova Scotia…..New Scotland, may give a clue, but it remains to be seen how accurate this analogy is. Nova Scotia is Canada’s 2nd smallest province. It is almost an island, surrounded completely by water, but for the slender 9.73 mile border it shares with New Brunswick .The coastline is varied and beautiful & where the Atlantic meets the East coast, there are hundreds of beaches, rugged coves and headlands. On the interior shores the world’s highest tides ebb and flow along the Bay of Fundy, creating long stretches of deserted red sanded and pebbled beaches. ... read more

We were so excited to be on our way, then…… our Fan-tas-tic (or not so) fan broke. Still it was not all bad because as luck would have it we were driving right past the factory on our way to the Border. The web site said “call in any time, we will be pleased to repair / replace your fan for free”. After a month, what difference did another day make? So we delayed our plans for a day to call in… Well they certainly lived up to their claims We felt like royalty. After a greeting and a quick run down on the guys political views (i.e. he apologised for Bush, very refreshing following Elkhart) a quick Tourist Information Service chat and free coffees, we were taken on a tour of the factory. At each ... read more

Well, we have served our sentence in “Camp Monaco”, and it feels like a life- time. Having never spent more than 2 week in any one (beautiful) place, we are now on week 4 in a car park in Elkhart Indiana. Not that Indiana is an awful place, it isn’t. It a lush green agricultural state, famous for being home to one of the largest Amish and Mennonite communities, home of the RV industry, the manufacture of vitamin pills and musical instruments. What more could you want? Now, we didn’t expect too much as Indiana does have one of the thinnest guide books on the shelf. However, there is a limited amount of time you can spend experiencing the Amish stuff, looking at endless fields of sweetcorn and soya bean, or touring RV factories and outlets. ... read more

Howdy Y’all….. this has been the southern part of our tour, and yet again, is a complete contrast. It has been hot and humid, almost tropical....... you expect to see giraffes drinking at the water's edge, not long horn cattle. As I write this we are sitting out in a warm balmy night, after a crushingly humid day, chirruping things chirping, bitey things biting, fire flies glowing and in the background , country music being performed from the porch. Yep we are most definitely in the South. It has been a great time and full of all those things you think are a “cliché of country”. Elegant southern houses, cowboys , long horn cattle & horses, Blues & Country music, catfish and gumbo. The last few weeks have been a bit more urban based than normal, ... read more
