KELLEY AND DAVE’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE The Big Trip West…Notes From the road: WEEK FOUR. Thursday, June 12, Zion. Our peaceful night in the campsite with flute compliment turned into a cold and windy early morning that, because of the buffeting winds, allowed me only 5 hours sleep. In addition, some flute enthusiast began playing their flute at sunrise. At 6am I went into the camp showers and heard other women grumbling about the noisy flutes and cold, howling wind that ended their sleep far too early. Apparently there were many flutists in the campsite [View Full Entry]

What is a hoodoo? It is a pillar of rock, usually iof fantastic shape, left by erosion. A hoodoo can also cast a spell. Our visit to Bryce Canyon National Park was highlighted by the hoodoos surrounded by the beauty of southern Utah. About ten million years ago, forces within the Earth created then moved large blocks known as the Table Cliffs and Paunsaugunt plateaus. Rock layers on the Table Cliffs now tower 2000 feet above corresponding layers on the Paunsaugunt. Ancient rivers carved the tops and exposed the edges of these blocks, removing some layers and sculpting formations in other [View Full Entry]

From Sunset Point

Oct 31, Nov 1, 2008 Millions of years of erosive forces of nature have sculpted some of the best rock art that nature could sculpt in the form of hoodoos of Bryce Canyon. There are hundreds of them in the Bryce amphitheater. They vary in height from a few feet to the height of a few story tall building. A shade of red and white are the main colors that these hoodoos wear. Some are completely red, a few are completely white and some have their top sedimentary layers white while the bottom is all red. Looking at these hoodoos close [View Full Entry]

Well I am writing on Saturday Oct 11. However I am writing about Wednesday. We are behind because of the lack of wifi hotspots. I am stealing one from another motel at the present. Wednesday was spent mostly in Bryce Canyon. We hiked into the hoodoos at the bottom of the canyon. This was a difficult hike but well worth it. It is like a fairyland hike with all the hoodoos and cliffs surrounding us. Latter we hiked into Red Canyon and up to an area with 15 arches. The pictures I am uploading presently are from these areas. Yesterday Friday [View Full Entry]

Left Las Vegas and headed through Arizona and then into Utah, home of the mormon. Still in dry desert and canyon land, but the futher north we go it is greening a bit and more trees' growing. Stayed the night at Bryce Canyon, and we woke up to it snowing outside. From the mid to high 30s for the last week, it was a shock to have a day where the tempreture didnt get over 5 deg. Although it was sunny, the wind was howling and it was absolutely freezing and bitter. The landscape looks like something out of a cartoon [View Full Entry]

Kodachrome, Bryce, Zion and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon Mon June 30 to Sat July 5 Kodachrome State Park After our hike to Upper Calf Creek Falls, we set off for our reserved site at Kodachrome State Park. Here too we were setting up in the dark and it was very late - since we hadn’t planned on the hike; we were trying to keep quiet as we pitched camp, since some other campers night be asleep. Another hot and dusty desert campground, but with very nice facilities and good, large sites. In the morning we packed up and [View Full Entry]

Salut mes amis. (Hi my friends.) If you have ever wanted to visit France, a far cheaper alternative is Utah in August. We assume that since it is so cheap to travel to the US, and France has the month of August off, they are all vacationing in the US. Thus far, it has been a rarity to hear English spoken among visitors to the NPs. Nickey has enjoyed eavesdropping and translating the juicy parts for Cody's benefit. First off, we arrived in Bryce Canyon midday. After our prior experiences with the weather and setting up camp, we decided right off [View Full Entry]

We are now in Mexico but have sorted some stuff to update our USA trip! (-: July 7th Jackson Hole, Wyoming White water rafting on the Snake River. Both of us got thrown off, but what a laugh.
