Travel is a huge part of my life. If I'm not just coming back from a trip, you'll probably find me planning one. I have the travel bug for sure. Now that I have the means to travel more often, I thought an online journal would be a great way to keep in touch with family and friends (meanwhile making them wildly jealous) and would be useful in documenting my experiences for myself or anyone who may be interested in my destinations.

It was a great day for a 6-mile hike in the Mojave National preserve. Getting there was something of an adventure too, since I managed to miss my first exit and assumed all roads would eventually lead to Rome. Following the signs from Baker, Califnornia, I drove on a rutted dirt road for miles and miles and miles. It seemed to take forever, although I could only reasonably manage 10-15 miles per hour. It was a very scenic drive though, and one I might not have been inclined to take otherwise. Nearing the visitors center, there was snow lightly blanketing the landscape. I wondered how much now the desert got in the peak of winter. The visitors center was a little ranch building in the middle of nowhere and was still closed when I arrived. The ... read more

My greatly anticipated day trip into Death Valley began at 2:30 in the morning. I travelled through Pahrump and past the “Amargosa Opera House” sign. It may have been an interesting drive, had it not been before dawn. For most of the drive, I could see the artificial glow of Las Vegas in the distance. When I arrived at the Badwater Basin parking lot three hours later, I found no one else there. It was an exciting surreal moment, being the only human for miles and miles, shrouded in thick silence and darkness. The sky was full of stars and it did not take long for my eyes to adjust to their light. I didn’t even need my head lamp. Walking out into the salt flats, I watched a couple stars shoot across the sky and ... read more

January 20-22, 2013 Jennifer Comes to Visit After some travel complications, my little sister arrived in Las Vegas on Sunday morning. We went to breakfast at a busy local spot and then took off for Oatman, Arizona. Our path was not entirely direct, but the two and a half hour drive was filled with interesting desert scenery and endless chatter. To get to the little town, we drove on a segment of old Historic Route 66. I’ve always wanted to drive on part of this road, though not for any particular reason. It was unkept and windy and we pondered at the idea that this was THE road that carried countless travelers before the smooth interstate freeways were constructed. At last we arrived at our destination. What can I really say about Oatman? It is advertised ... read more

About an hour north of Las Vegas, the Valley of Fire State Park is a pleasant get-away day trip. Similar to Red Rock Canyon to the southwest of town, Valley of Fire comprises of multi-toned red sandstone and jagged basalt. Hiking trails are marked well enough to get around, and it’s hardly ever crowded. I spent a handful of hours roaming around the park and checking out some of the shorter trails. There is much left to be explored. Definitely recommended for those looking to get out of the neon jungle and stretch their legs, and especially great for families. Just turn the kids loose to scramble up the rocks to their hearts’ content. I stayed until the sun began to set, intending to capture some great sunset shots. My plan was foiled when a winter ... read more
