Hi all So we made it through Day 1 safe and sound to Port Aransas on the Gulf of Mexico. We started with lots of traffic getting out of Austin but soon made it onto the lesser roads where we could travel at 75MPH (that's 120Kmh!!!). The 3 Harley Road King's we have are very heavy, very load, and vibrate like hell over 60Kmh. Lunch was in San Antonio at a Crab Place but the temperature was so hot, none of us were hungry. If you think riding a bike is a great way to stay cool, imagine trying to cool down by turning a hair-dryer on full heat into your face. Dinner was a $10 all you can eat pizza and salad joint, actually not too bad but i think we were the only ines ... read more

Sunday, January 27th— HolidayInn Express, Port Aransas, TX We left about 10:30 after eating the hotel-provided breakfast and checking our e-mails. Back to making waffles shaped like the state of Texas. At the Texas Welcome Center, we were able to pick up a series of glossy, slick, beautifully-made and illustrated maps of the "Great Texas Birding Trails." We were particularly interested in the coastal areas and along the Rio Grande Valley. These maps give the locations in sets of loops you can take of various sanctuaries, wetlands, parks, trails, ponds, etc. where specific birds may be found. We used these maps with various success on this trip. Birds being birds, they don't cooperate and show up at these places like Disney's trained mechanical animals. They also hang out at different locations depending upon the time of ... read more

March 15 – Thursday – Port Aransas...The nice and a bit hot weather has arrived at Port Aransas and so the Spring Breakers are arriving as well. The IGA grocery store is packed and sold out of AA batteries(for one of my camera’s) and ripe bananas (green only available). Still it is nice to be around well behaved young people. The party animals are further down the beach around beach access roads 1 and 1A. We quieter sorts use the Beach Road Access and the Avenue G access roads. Our beaches at marker 11 - 13 are much cleaner as well...I found out they serve breakfast at Moby Dicks Restaurant on Alister St. I don’t normally eat breakfast but didn’t feel like going to the MacDonalds in Aransas Pass, particularly as I was going to use ... read more

March 14, 2012 – Wednesday – Port Aransas beach...Woke up to a nice cool and comfortable morning at the beach in Port Aransas. I decided to drive down the beach southward exploring along the Southern edge of Mustang Island…..A beach parking permit is required between Lantana Drive (South of Horace Caldwell Pier) and marker 62. The city web page said the permit is good to the Kleberg county line south of Bob Hall Pier. No permit is required between the jetties and Horace Caldwell pier (except in I B Magee beach park, there is a fee) and marker 52 and 58. However at just $12 for 3 days in one spot and then just move a bit for 3 more the beaches up near m11 – 13 are much nicer, and everyone I talked to told ... read more

Friday March 9 – Port Aransas - A serious cool front came in last night and it started raining. Most of the day it has been a soft rain but now at about 7 PM it has changed to a sideways rain. I crossed over the channel to the mainland at Aransas Pass on the free ferry since there was no MacDonalds for internet access in Port Aransas. And I want a sausage egg mcmuffin with coffee for breakfast...I am using this cold and windy day to catch up on my internet work. Tomorrow I will move down to the south end of Mustang Island or the North end of Padre Island and start exploring Corpus Christi. It was very windy and started raining last night. Although the weather is far from ideal, maybe that’s why ... read more

Thursday March 8, 2012 - Magnolia Beach to Port Aransas...Today I went to Rockport and checked out the Texas Maritime Museum and The Aquarium at Rockport harbor...Rockport must be some kind of retirement haven as going into town I passed RV park after RV park...At Colorado St. at business 35 there is a SuperWalmart with RV parking spaces on the East end of the parking lot. Of course you have those stupid and lazy people in regular trucks using some of them but there were plenty of spaces nevertheless…Going south out of Rockport on business 35 I stopped at a seafood restaurant called The Big Fisherman on Hwy 188 north of business 35 and had a mini seafood platter. The restaurant was very big and spacious inside and was playing soft country tunes. On M-Fr. From ... read more

7-8-10: Back on the road headed for Corpus Christi today. Arrived about 2pm and parked at Wal-mart...do you see a trend here??? We were thinking of staying in an RV park and had a few on our list to check out...needless to say, some were underwater from the storm, and the others were just not our cup of tea. We walked on the beach for a bit, but weren’t impressed with it (a LOT of garbage!!) nor the town, so we decided to head for Port Aransas. Parked the coach at the Wal-mart in Aransas Pass and took the car on the free ferry to PA. It was a cute little beach town, but again, it was a veritable ghost town!! I did think it was incongruous that the natural areas around town not only sported ... read more
