After a rockin' fun night it's time to pack up and hit the road again. We have agreed to go a little off track and head toward Santa Fe and Las Vegas, New Mexico - the original Route 66 before a decision to straighten the route from Albuquerque directly to Santa Rosa. We do a quick cruise through Old Town and both agree that we want to come back to this city for more exploration. It is gorgeous, colorful and really interesting to us both. The Old Town section is a plaza with shops and restaurants and beautiful architecture - it was two (2) blocks from Hotel Blue - we'll be back! Central Avenue in Albuquerque is Route 66 so there are lots of cool signs and places to check out. We made one stop, The ... read more

We passed through Amarillo. It's sunny and 83 degrees. We passed a huge white cross; I got a picture of it. We stopped for lunch on the east side of Amarillo at a rest stop. The rest stop was beautiful. I guess it's true that Texas does everything bigger. There were covered shelter areas with picnic tables, grills shaped like the state of Texas with a food prep area. I went in the RV and made a sandwich for us: turkey breast, swiss, fresh tomatoes, mustard, chipotle mayo on dilly rye. We also had chips and watermelon. We sat at one of those fine tables in the shade and enjoyed our lunch. We called all three sons to say hello and say we missed them. We crossed the Oklahoma border. My first time here! Appropriatedly a ... read more

10th July I hate the greyhound. Admittedly we haven't had any convicts scare the bejesus out of us but this bus must be the fatty bus. These people must of thought it was meals on wheels and guess who got the heavy weight champion next to him. Me. I got the biggest tub of lard sat next to me. I suppose on the up side he turned out to be a nice guy. He only took up a of quarter of my seat and allocated most of his body to the neutral zone of the aisle. He was a big lad needless to say. This posed problems when I wanted to get my iPad out and play sonic racing against the other lads over Bluetooth as they were spread across the bus also on their own. ... read more

Some days you just end up doing a lot more than normal. Today was one of those days. Thinking we had a short travel day today, we slept in, relaxed, rode bikes, did some laundry, and left Santa Rosa at 10:30 on our way to Amarillo. The driving was entirely on frontage roads, with an occasional freeway jaunt when necessary. As far as the actual driving, it was pretty dull.. just driving next to the freeway, though the scenery was nice. What really made today enjoyable were the side adventures that we decided to do. We passed the halfway point of Route 66 (YAY). There is some debate between 2 towns as to the exact halfway point. Since Route 66 alignments changed so drastically and so often, it is hard to say one is wrong or ... read more

This morning we had coupons for a complimentary breakfast that required us to make a choice from five set breakfast options. Other complimentary breakfasts have been buffet-style which is preferable - being able to pick and choose what you would like. I opted for the bagel with cream cheese, fruit, juice and tea. Bernie went for the wheat toast, fruit and juice. When our breakfasts arrived the fruit was ... BANANA. Ugh! The bagel was good though - I do like a toasted bagel with jam and cream cheese. After breakfast we headed off towards Clinton on the north side of the I-40. At Clinton we visited the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum on Gary Boulevard. Admission to the museum was US$5.00!! We have become so accustomed to being able to visit most places of interest FOR ... read more

What a loooong day! We got up and hit the road in Miami at about 8:00am and immediately made a wrong turn through town and got a nice tour of some farm fields in Oklahoma for a few miles. As we turned around we met a nice black lab who seemed to want to come along with us. We found our way, hit Route 66, and headed west. Oklahoma has a lot of old steel arch and truss bridges through it that were neat to see. One of them towards the end of the day had 38 steel arches holding it up; quite a long bridge and pretty impressive for having been built back in the 30s. We stopped for lunch in Stroud, OK to eat at the Rock Cafe. It's another place that was featured ... read more

Geo: 35.2072, -101.8345/15/12 – Texas. So much to say about Texas. And that surprised me, because other than the big cities like Dallas, I though it was nothing but prairies. Well that is kind of the truth, but there is so much more. We left at 8:15 AM headed for Amarillo, the city where my father was stationed in the Air Force, and where my brother Dick was conceived shortly after my parents got married. So I was anxious to visit this town. After some discussion, we decided to take a more scenic route today. Getting out of Dallas was a real challenge, during rush hour and with all of the construction, we might still be there but for the Garmin. She made a few errors today, due largely to construction, but all in all, she ... read more

Early morning this morning to go out and do some hot air ballooning! I was so excited about this. We arrived at the launch field around 7.15am and watched them set up the balloon. A couple of the boys held the balloon open while it was inflating, but I dont think they quite expected the burners to be turned on. Im pretty sure they jumped atleast a foot in the air. Once we got in the air it was amazing, not so much the view but just the experience. Albuquerque is a pretty big city, so most of the time we were flying over the metropolitan areas, with a view to the outlying hills. One of the highlights was skimming quite close to the freeway and getting people honking at us, but it was equally special ... read more

Left the Tucumcari Inn on the '66' a little later this morning as we didn't have to ride quite so far. Filled up the tank and headed east towards Adrian, which is exactly midway between Chicago and L.A. This would take us out of New Mexico and back into Texas. Stopped in this small reminder of what a town on the route 66 used to be like (before the interstate ruined the businesses.) Had some lunch in the apt, Midpoint Cafe, took some pics (all of these cafes, resturants/pubs all have gift shops within them!) We got on the bike in the seering Texan heat (the dash was showing over 100 degrees) and set off for Amarillo. (Singing the song, obviously!) We pulled in at the most inccredible tourist attraction 'cadillac ranch', where 10 graffitti'd cars ... read more

Howdy Y'all...So we are bedding down for the night in Amarillo, Tejas after having visited the BIG TEXAN. Raul did not take on the 72 oz. Steak Challenge BUT he did do the Man Vs. Food Commemorative Platter and conquered it. This was after having had the Mountain Oysters for appetizers. NOW, if you don't know what those are...stick to the calamari. I must say, they WERE tasty. I partook of a ribeye that was delish. The better part of today we spent driving into Amarillo from Albuquerque. In ABQ, we went to the Frontier Restaurant where we had the Green Chile Bacon Cheeseburger as seen on Man Vs. Food. In ABQ, we also went to this panaderia, Golden Crown Panaderia, with such delicious biscochitos. YES...our trip is consisting of what we have seen on Man ... read more
