Day 2 in Amarillo saw us visiting the local zoo. We were the only people there. It was quite sweet and had some regional exhibits like buffalo and bobcats. Calvin liked the spider monkeys because they reminded him of the Bobos from Go Diego (apologies to those without Nick Jr.). I don't have any pics because I forgot the camera... oops. After picking up the camera, we headed west out of town to the Cadillac Ranch. A 'crop' of 10 vintage Caddies, half buried in the middle of a cow paddock. It's a community work in progress, judging from the empty spray cans littering the site. I imagine it's more agreeable to walk through a cow paddock in the summer. That evening, we went back to the Big Texas Ranch for dinner, but this time we ... read more

WE left Jan's place around 8.30 am and headed toward Texas. We are on our way to Amarillo. Another gorgeous, but cool, day. Clear blue skies. WE are going through Weatherford, OK where there is this big windmill farm. I have seen them in some movies, I know and they are pretty cool. Also kind of eerie. I guess they are really loud but we didn't stop. The land is getting redder from the clay and flatter as we get closer to Texas. It has been a pretty desolate drive once we got out of Oklahoma City area. Very windy too causing less mileage per gallon. Ouch......We have seen "dyed" diesel at $2.11 a gallon but we don't know what it is!! Traffic has not been bad at all. Will add more if anything more exciting ... read more

Day 2 - On the Road - Arlington to Albuquerque Wow, I never knew the Texas panhandle was so flat and it takes forever to get through!!!!! Not much to see here but lots of cows, cotton fields, hay fields and just plain ol' yellow & brown grass fields everywhere! Some of the small towns were nice. I snapped a few photos of windmills and trains. The kids just watched movies the whole way. We stopped just over the New Mexico border and took pics. The sunset was beautiful but didn't get to see much more of NM before we got to Albuquerque...too dark! Guess we'll see it on the way back!im... read more

Sometime you know what kind of day you are going to have when you turn on your GPS device and it says in .8 miles take a right and then go 297 miles and take another right in Albuquerque. So we begin our day in Amarillo. Jacquelyn got some major kite flying time last night after the best Mexican dinner we have ever eaten (Abuelos if anyone is ever in town). They have wind here like this Eastern born family doesn’t know and she had an absolute blast. Ed worked through day but we wanted to get to do something more involved before we left the city so we traveled to Palo Duro Canyon (the largest canyon in TX). It was a beautiful day and as we traveled the 75 mile/hr speed limit on the two ... read more

Kate here... I'm sitting in the corner of a Starbucks in Amarillo, using their wi-fi, because some of the 5000 different cords for our various gadgets are in a state of limbo somewhere in the car. And I seem to have started some bruhaha about using Treos to get online with a laptop. Sorry about that. I had no idea it was an issue, and just had a couple of technical questions :( So I looks like we'll be blogging text from the Treo on the road, and posting pictures how/when we can. Like now. I'm going to dump all of the pictures from the past few days in this post, and then try and go back and edit in the text with the phone on the road. Kate here again... Trace Lake MS was nice, ... read more

If you ever going to make it to Amarillo, go to the Big Texan Steak Ranch. We have had a great time there. And for those who need a challange... there is one. If you can finish one of there steaks in an hour your meal is for free and you get to stay in there hotel for the night also for free. The thing is that the steak is 72 ounces. (± 2 kilo). While we were there we saw two guys try it... and failed. To give you an impression see the pic of them when they started... the side dishes btw have to be eaten too. And no, we did not try it. We wanted to simply enjoy our meal... lol. And we have been serious all the way. (see the pics to ... read more

Having packed my whole bedroom and kitchen - at least this was how I felt - and everything else that I could think of into my trusted Honda Accord, I was finally off for my trip. I made the final stop at Costco for cheap gas and 36 bottles of spring water before I drove onto the I-35 heading South. Today would be mostly driving - a 600 miles trip from Overland Park, KS to Amarillo, TX. There was not much to see along I-35, except lots of open fields or rolling hills. The feeling was very familar. It reminded me of my many trips to Iowa when Christine was still in college and I was driving up I-35 to see her. Those are good old times - I especially remember the fun of driving in ... read more
