BAJA OR BUST

Mike and Kathleen Bulger

This will be our 4th year out as retirees. Our trip to the Baja was a wonderful adventure and we will definitely go back again! The Baja is a unique beauty and we are very glad that we made the trip in our RV even though it was a little "rough" driving at times! Hope you enjoy our adventures as well!

This is pretty much the route we traveled on the way down and back. Unfortunately the Google map feature does not label any of the visited cities in the Baja. You can manipulate the map with the utilities at the left of the map (to enlarge the map or minimize it) Check the route here... read more

Yesterday was a long travel day but a very picturesque one along the way so it wasn't too boring. We ended up in Gallup, New Mexico which is known as a center of Native American Art and Culture ( my siblings would be warning me of kidnapping here). It is in the Navajo Reservation and Zuni lands. The area is also home to the red canyons and desert lands. Very beautiful. We passed through Albuquerque which is the largest city in New Mexico and straddles the Rio Grande. The traffic going west was very heavy!! Glad we were not going in that direction. As we passed through, it was cloudy and there was a fog coming down over the Sandia Mountains which surround the city. Some thirty or so miles outside of Albuquerque, the land ... read more

We made it to Lake Havasu last Monday and spent a week of fun and relaxation at Sue and Art's place again. Mike got to go golfing twice so that was good therapy for him. I got to sleep in, play on my computer, catch up on the news at CNN and sit in the sun at the pool! But we also did some touring in the area. Last night Sue was determined to find this desert bar that she had read about so we headed out to Parker, about 30 miles or so from Havasu, then down a dirt road into the desert for about 4 miles. We were really wondering how there could be a bar out in the middle of nowhere when lo and behold, there it was! The Nellie E. Saloon ... read more

Thanks to all of you faithful blog followers! I know that it must have gotten boring but we appreciated that you shared our adventures and MISadventures with us!!! Miles gracias Yes, we are back stateside and it is great. It took awhile to get here but we made it without too much trouble. The worst was the 3 hour wait at the border getting back in to the US. Wow. Sunday is NOT a good day to go into the US. We really made good time in spite of MORE bad roads on the toll road in Mexico. We are not quite sure how that government justifies charging tolls and then does nothing with its highways! Another sign of corruption? Mmmmmm..... We were both pretty frazzled by the time we got out of Mexico. I ... read more

Friday we left our little Barriles and headed to La Paz to catch the ferry across to the mainland. Taking the ferry will cut down about 5 days of treacherous driving up the Baja Peninsula. The drive is much easier on the mainland as well. As usual, getting ON the ferry was a very complicated process. Mike and I figured if we were in charge, this country could move along much more efficiently. Example…..We arrived at the boat dock at 10.30 am. First we parked and then were told that we first needed a temporary permit for the RV and the truck in order to enter the mainland. Of course, we needed all of the documentation on the vehicles as well as our passports, driver’s licenses etc. No problem. Now one hour later….Return to ticket ... read more

I know, I know......we keep extending our time here but we ARE leaving this Friday for SURE!!! Part of the reason that we did not want to leave right away is the road construction that has been taking place through the town. It has taken about 2 weeks to tear up a road about a mile long! The equipment that they use is ancient so it is a slower process. At one point the drop off of the curve to the street out of this RV park was about 10 inches. which could cause the back of the pickup to hit the 5er and put a nice hole in it so we decided we better stay! Nice excuse, eh? NO, that part is true about the road. IT has been a dusty little village! WE ... read more

Here are some things that we have learned during our adventures here in the Baja , but they apply to all of Mexico! 1. Knowing some Spanish is very helpful. 2. Eat where the locals eat. 3. Patience is UTMOST in Mexico. Things that are usually done promptly at home are NOT done in that fashion here. 4. If you want something done, establish a kind and respectful relationship with the person with whom you are dealing! 5. Don't sweat the small stuff. The water or electricity go out? No hay problema. They will come on again...eventually. 6. Learn to slow down.....in EVERYTHING! Walking, eating meals, talking. 7. Drive OFFENSIVELY! Everyone else does. There are 2 rules when driving in Mexico: Don't hit anyone and don't get hit by anyone! 8. Everyone matters, from the beggar ... read more

I am not really sure WHY we decided to venture out again after a day of bad roads yesterday. BUT, we HEARD from folks who have taken this trip just a bit north of los Barriles to these two villages on the water that the roads were NOT that bad. Yes, some bad spots along the way but no problem in the truck. Plus, it is only about 20 miles or so. AND......"it is so worth it". We got up early and headed out and took the first bad road and figured that we HAD to be on the wrong road after about 20 minutes of bouncing and giving the shocks a good work out. So we went back up to the "new" road which was a two lane highway. We climbed and climbed and saw ... read more

Today we took a day trip to a nearby little village called La Ribera and then took a really bad road to a wonderful beach which is pretty much deserted and perhaps a "secret". Well, maybe not when one considers that the road to get there is washboard for a lot of miles. I am not even sure how many miles but it took about an hour to get there! But it really was worth it. We cannot imagine how anyone could even consider developing anything in that area because the roads are so bad. But there is develoment going on but not a lot. This development has a great location near the beach ! Mike now thinks that this beach area has been the BEST ever! It really was magnificent. There is a little light ... read more

The weather continues to be very warm during the day and mild at night. We really are enjoying getting to know the area around here. This little village has a lot to offer if you are willing to explore the dusty roads. We discovered this little restaurant called Cafe Maria just up from the main road. The main room only has 2 tables but if you go outside, there are more on the patio of the home ! Great food at even greater prices. We also discovered an expreso bar up from the main road. Very nice building and atmosphere. Of course, getting there is all the fun! It continues to amaze us that people can even subsist here. What really gets me is that you will see a really nice building--like the TelMex, run by ... read more
