Day 4 - Miami, OK to Amarillo, TX
Published: May 16th 2012North America » United States » Texas » AmarilloWhat a loooong day! We got up and hit the road in Miami at about 8:00am and immediately made a wrong turn through town and got a nice tour of some farm fields in Oklahoma for a few miles. As we turned around we met a nice black lab who seemed to want to come along with us. We found our way, hit Route 66, and headed west. Oklahoma has a lot of old steel arch and truss bridges through it that were neat to see. One of them towards the end of the day had 38 steel arches holding it up; quite a long bridge and pretty impressive for having been built back in the 30s. We stopped for lunch in Stroud, OK to eat at the Rock Cafe. It's another place that was featured ... read more
Day 23: Albuquerque - Amarillo
Published: January 19th 2012North America » United States » Texas » AmarilloEarly morning this morning to go out and do some hot air ballooning! I was so excited about this. We arrived at the launch field around 7.15am and watched them set up the balloon. A couple of the boys held the balloon open while it was inflating, but I dont think they quite expected the burners to be turned on. Im pretty sure they jumped atleast a foot in the air. Once we got in the air it was amazing, not so much the view but just the experience. Albuquerque is a pretty big city, so most of the time we were flying over the metropolitan areas, with a view to the outlying hills. One of the highlights was skimming quite close to the freeway and getting people honking at us, but it was equally special ... read more
Amarillo, where sweet margarita waits for me!
Published: July 30th 2011North America » United States » Texas » AmarilloLeft the Tucumcari Inn on the '66' a little later this morning as we didn't have to ride quite so far. Filled up the tank and headed east towards Adrian, which is exactly midway between Chicago and L.A. This would take us out of New Mexico and back into Texas. Stopped in this small reminder of what a town on the route 66 used to be like (before the interstate ruined the businesses.) Had some lunch in the apt, Midpoint Cafe, took some pics (all of these cafes, resturants/pubs all have gift shops within them!) We got on the bike in the seering Texan heat (the dash was showing over 100 degrees) and set off for Amarillo. (Singing the song, obviously!) We pulled in at the most inccredible tourist attraction 'cadillac ranch', where 10 graffitti'd cars ... read more
Albuquerque, NM and Amarillo, Tejas
Published: July 11th 2011North America » United States » Texas » AmarilloHowdy Y'all...So we are bedding down for the night in Amarillo, Tejas after having visited the BIG TEXAN. Raul did not take on the 72 oz. Steak Challenge BUT he did do the Man Vs. Food Commemorative Platter and conquered it. This was after having had the Mountain Oysters for appetizers. NOW, if you don't know what those are...stick to the calamari. I must say, they WERE tasty. I partook of a ribeye that was delish. The better part of today we spent driving into Amarillo from Albuquerque. In ABQ, we went to the Frontier Restaurant where we had the Green Chile Bacon Cheeseburger as seen on Man Vs. Food. In ABQ, we also went to this panaderia, Golden Crown Panaderia, with such delicious biscochitos. YES...our trip is consisting of what we have seen on Man ... read more
Farewells this morning were bittersweet as Audrey and Elliot (who had slept over in the RV with us last night) thought they should pack their clothes and come with us. The Via with the Auto Moto on trailer behind got many stares as we traveled to the first stop in Amarillo, home of The Big Texan Restaurant. It's famous for the free 72-oz steak. It's only free if you can eat it in less than an hour. No takers in our group. Richard and Ginger Cook, friends from 40+ years ago, came to the RV park for a visit before dinner. ... read more
The rather large big state of everything big
Published: June 5th 2011North America » United States » Texas » AmarilloAnother fine day in Merri-can land and we are having a fine and dandy time ya'll, seeing the sights, smelling the food, pondering, contemplating...our very next move. Texas was and is a pretty fine place if we do say so ourselves, approaching Cadillac ranch us two cowboys hopped out to literally did the Cadillac ranch next to some upside down painted up Cadillacs and generally make some asses of ourselves, not to be pretentious or anything. Right now we sit in the cheapest motel for two in Amarillo, Amarillo reminds me somewhat of an Armadillo so I shall pretend that they first lived here. I'm sure of it. There are practically one hundred religious channels of preacher men preaching, which is a great tool to keep Bryce massaging my sore and weary back after much hardship, ... read more
Driving through New Mexico is amazing and possibly our favourite place so far, not to mention the weather here is to die for, hot summer days and cooler nights. Our first main stop was Albuquerque, a bustling little town with plenty of things to see and do, and of course, killer Mexican food. Driving into the town the houses were beautiful and your typical Mexican houses, all Earth tones of reds, beige and then the occasional green awnings to finish it off, with black wrought iron decorations for doors and fences and lush drought resistant plants. A Mexican house to build in either Alberta or Victoria…Perhaps, the houses here are mad and would feel like summer all year long, except if it were to snow and cover the whole building. We stopped in the Old Town ... read more
Graceland, Oklahoma & Texas
I woke up in a hotel room, still tired, at 7am and began to get ready to leave. I showered, ate breakfast, which was the best breakfast I’d had all trip with yogurts and bagels available. I walked outside to find the sun out and the sky blue with not a cloud in the sky, yet again. Despite the -6C temperatures, the car was no frosted up. I later discovered this may have been because two of the windows were left open ajar from the night before. Inside the car was almost colder than outside the car. I packed up the car and turned on the heating for a while. I then returned to the hotel room and watched TV until everyone else was ready to leave. It wasn’t until around 9.30am that we eventually left ... read more
Trip West- Greenville to Amarillo
Published: September 15th 2010North America » United States » Texas » AmarilloWell, we're off. Tonight we are in Amarillo, Texas. We have stopped for one night stands in Crossville, TN, Memphis, TN, Checotah, OK, and now Amarillo, Texas (September 11th til September 14th). So far, so good. Some pictures are provided. Some general comments are: - Most RVers are just like us - retired, in good health, and have adventuresome spirits - Most RVers like to talk (If you go outside your RV, be prepared to meet new friends) - Interstate I-40 is very bumpy in parts of Tennessee, Arkansas, and Oklahoma - Oklahoma was prettier than I expected... read more
