I grew up in Charleston SC. Our family moved here in 1953, moved away for tw years, then returned in 1955 and remained here from then on. It is where I attended primary and secondary schools, lived when school was not in session during my college years, and lived during medical school. Then, in 1976, I graduated from medical school and headed to San Diego for internship. Other than 2 years back here as a medical oncologist, I have lived away during my entire professional career, principally in Bethesda MD area and in Oklahoma City. In September 2016 my wife and I rented a small house in Mt. Pleasant, and now have bought a house on James Island. Coming back to Charleston has caused me to see things differently. I am trying to re-explore some of ... read more

Biking on Hilton Head Island The good news is that there are lots of trails and all are FLAT. The bad news is that 70% of the island is GATED. In order to use the trails behind these gates, you must pay an entry fee(generally around $6.00). Granted there are a number of trails along the main roads that are free. But those trails usually parallel main roads and therefore busy. If you want quiet, low traffic, peaceful rides then your choice is behind one of the gated communities. These gated communities can be fairly large. For example, Sea Pines takes up most of the southern part of the island. Another choice is to bike on the beach, especially during low tides. The sand is hard packed and as smooth as riding on fresh pavement. Since ... read more

Our trip started off perfectly! We left Lake Wylie today at 10:30am. Mark already had the RV ready - including a good wash so it looked perfect. We traded my car in for a 2012 CRV to tow 4-down! It was wonderful to just hookup and go... we should have done this a long time ago (thank you Robert for working with us to make this happen). Traffic was perfect - all the heavy traffic was going the other direction! We went through Atlanta with no trouble - I didn’t even panic! Left home 3/5/2018 Time: 10:30am Drove 368 miles - 6 hrs 7.7 mpg Arrived in Auburn, Alabama at 3:30 CST (1-hr time change)... read more

We arrived in Gaffney SC a couple days early for our 18-19 Jan service at Oasis Freightliner Custom Chassis Service Center. It is critical we get Camp Boss serviced before we embark on our cross continent journey, so we wanted to take no chances of being late. Well it's a good thing we showed up early, because we timed our arrival with an unexpected snow storm. We were going to stay a couple days in the very nice Spartanburg/Gaffney KOA, but nature had its own plans. So we showered and caught up on laundry at the KOA, then got up early on the 17th to move into the Oasis FCC maintenance lot a day early. The maintenance lot is great, it has wireless, a dump station, and 50 amp service and they provide it free to ... read more

The one about forgetfulness Hi. I’m back. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year! Welcome old friends and readers, and welcome new friends and readers. Please follow along and see what my Snowbird Trip 2018 brings. My first real Florida reservation starts Saturday. I was closely watching the weather for the past week. Knowing I had not winterized my RV, Moya, I knew I had to get out of town before the temperature dipped below freezing for longer than 5 sustained hours. After opening Christmas presents with the family, I went home and undecorated my house, and before 9:00 the next morning, all decorations, inside and out, were boxed up and stowed away. That night, son Tim helped me get Moya out of storage and into my driveway. I don’t know which is worse, loading her up when ... read more

This cross country road trip is a 40th Wedding Anniversary celebration, so we would be remiss if we did not return to our honeymoon spot, Charleston SC. In 1978 it was August, so you can imagine the temperature outside, but we were young and high 90s-high humidity was fine. It was a little different on this trip...to say the least. The first couple days we were there the weather was cool, but sunny. Perfect weather for walking around and viewing the battery area historic homes, exactly as we remembered them. What wonderful memories! We had a great time, testing out some wonderful restaurants and seeing the old sites. In 1977, we couldn't afford fine dining (or any dining) that I can remember, I think we packed food in our cooler to eat in the hotel. On ... read more
