Well, due partly to popular demand and partly to excessive boredom at work, I’ve decided to go ahead and make this blog thing. I don’t leave until Monday so I really don’t have that much to talk about yet. So far the plan is to drive to Atlanta Monday morning and be at the airport very very early for my 6:25 pm flight. I should (hopefully) make it to London around 7:30 am their time - which is around 2:30 am Eastern time. Someone from the program is supposed to meet me at the airport (Glasgow) and take me over to [View Full Entry]

These palms are ubiquitous in Kiawah's underbrush
It took exactly one hour to drive the 21+ miles (around 34 km) from Kiawah Island to the point in Charleston where King Street ends at the edge of the water passing through the business district. This historical section of the city in the proximity of White Point Park is still a fair representation of what the town used to look when it was named Charles Town and the U.S.A. was still a British colony during the second half of the 18th Century. There is an evident pride by the owners of the properties in the area to preserve each house [View Full Entry]

Sunrise at Kiawah
Sunrise at Kiawah
On Monday, we finally had a clear sunrise to enjoy!
I walked six and a half miles (10.5 km) to the east end of Kiawah Island after witnessing a breathtaking sunrise on the very narrow high-tide beach. I had read that in this area, there is a year-around sea bird sanctuary that I wanted to see. Though Kiawah’s beach is very expansive during low tides, my walk East had to be restricted to a very narrow corridor where the beach ends and the sand dunes begin. In one segment, the beach corridor was totally interrupted by the high tide and I had to move inland, beyond the sand dunes, to continue [View Full Entry]

So, I am about to head out from Charleston to Atlanta to catch a 26 hour flight (with three (3) connections) to Punta Arenas. Christmas in Charleston is always a wonderful time - but time to enjoy the rest of the world. [View Full Entry]

Carrage in Charleston

Posted by: Onaxthiel: I know that there are only a handful of readers that will get this, but that makes today a day of divine intervention. It did turn out pretty well, so it's possible. Today we went out to Patriots Point, home of several WWII warships, most notably the USS Yorktown, “the Fighting Lady” made famous in a 1944 propaganda film of the same name. The various decks of Yorktown house dozens of exhibits beside the ones specifically dedicated to the ship herself, so I would recommend arriving as soon as the gates open at 9:00 in the morning. We [View Full Entry]

Posted by: Onaxthiel: Near Beaufort, SC stand the remains of Old Sheldon Church, founded by early South Carolinians, burned by the British for serving as a powder magazine, rebuilt and burned again by the Federals during the civil war. These days the remaining brick walls and pillars are surrounded by a beautiful landscape of trees, vines and bushes. Tomb stones dating to before the revolution and strangely walled up trees complete a pervasive sense of serenity and the usual in the morning mists that enshroud this place. The trunks of the trees all seem to lean in towards the ruins, giving [View Full Entry]

Back in my day....
.....what you talking about it is my day.....Silverchair concert ticket $15!!!!! HAPPY DAYS
Event 1 - Silverchair, playing a concert in my new neck of the woods....unheard of! Yet at the house of blues in Myrtle Beach, a lazy two hour drive north of the burgee-matthews manor the all grown up Silverchair and Paul Mac play to a ridiculously excited crowd. And the best bit about the show.......the cost.....$15.50 for the ticket. Not the $100+ it seems to cost these days for a stadium shows...you see back in my day you could see a red hot band for under $20......well i guess it still is my day! And despite being 1000's and 1000's of [View Full Entry]
