Well, the first leg of our trip is complete. We left New Martinsville at 7AM and arrived in Point South (Yemassee), South Carolina around 6 and were greeted with a hail storm. Hail was about as big as a dime. Benji was freaking out about his truck getting hailed on, and Mandie was mad because her camera was in the truck and she was missing out on good pictures! Found out that sometime between Jambo 07 and this trip 08, the syrup leaked and dirtied our plates, so we had to do dishes twice! There is also a warning on our [View Full Entry]

It's been three weeks since we've (the REU people at USC) been in South Carolina and today, I took my first step in the Atlantic Ocean via the South Carolina shoreline. I've stepped into it from North Carolina, but South Carolina was a little different. After getting stuck in a thunderstorm last night and watching GET SMART (good movie by the way), my roommate and our neighbor (a fellow REU-er) took off to Folly Beach, SC at 8am this morning for a day of fun. Along the way, we saw these girls in Columbia that looked dressed for the beach and [View Full Entry]

We left Homosassa around 9AM this morning and headed to Charleston. After a couple stops on the way for gas and such, we arrived at our campsite around 5PM and tried to catch a cab into town. No luck, so we settled for watching movies and having pasta for dinner. Tomorrow we are heading into to do a couple of walking tours before going on a Ghost Tour of Charleston. We drove about 380 miles today, bringing the total to 2,575 of about 4,000 miles. We are now up to 34 states and Jason is on his 4th book. [View Full Entry]

Finally, I have internet again (full-time now) and I can add some of the pictures from the last adventure of my roadtrip/my first full day in Columbia, SC. It's been about four days since I said goodbye to my sister and headed back to the university to meet the rest of my roommates and spend my first night in Rutledge Hall. I have to say that it has been four of the best days of my life. The day (Sunday) started though with my sister and I getting up and checking out of our ghetto hotel (it was ghetto because of [View Full Entry]

Awesome. It is made entirely of corn and grains!!
Wow...five days, 2800 miles, nine tanks of gas, 7 lemonades, three nights of camping, 2 hotel check-ins, and 1 stop asking for directions later and my sister and I are finally in Columbia, SC. These past five days have gone by insanely fast, but we have seen so many new things. Day three started off with us jetting to see the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD. It was such an amazing building that was built entirely of ears of corn and grains freshly grown from South Dakota. Each year, they rebuild the Corn Palace to a new theme and it has [View Full Entry]

Another Shadwell becomes a USC alumni
Well another Shadwell has graduated from the University of South Carolina. Congratulations, Rebecca! So to celebrate her academic achievement we headed to Charleston to participate in the very adult venue of Spoleto. What could be more grown up and educated then going to the opera? I am reminded of the book Little Women when Joe and her oldest sister get to go the opera and Amy is not allowed because she is to young. Going to Spoleto was not a purely selfish gift in that its on my, "To do before I die ", list. Rebecca likes Opera. Proof that [View Full Entry]

First up apologies for the Facebook users as you may recognise some photos that have already been posted......but hey what can you do! First up youll be pleased to know that i heard NPR (national public radio - a simply fabulous radio programme broadcast nationally ala triple J but whose emphasis rather than on music is on real news and current affairs both locally and globally - check it out at http://www.npr.org/ - simply tremendous coverage)......anyway the lead local story was that some of the local councillors in all their wisdom are trying to pass legislation aimed at deeming illegal [View Full Entry]

Wave of the day!
Second best wave of the day!
Second best wave of the day continued....

After checking out of our Kiawah Island condo, Alan and I spend an afternoon touring Charleston, SC before driving to Atlanta. With only a few hours to spare, it’s hard to choose between museums, home tours and carriage rides through the historic district. We need help. Alan eases the rental car into the only short-term parking space at the Visitor’s Center. He waits while I run inside to pick up brochures and advice. The place is packed with out-of-town visitors lining up to make reservations for area attractions. I return to the car with maps and a battle plan. After dr [View Full Entry]

Where do weary travelers go for rest and relaxation? Kiawah Island, South Carolina. For a few days in May, Alan and I are resting our itchy travel feet - no excursions, museums, cultural events or ports in exotic locations - just time on an island with a wide, sandy beach that’s perfect for taking long walks. This is Alan’s first time at an East Coast beach. Although he misses the lively wave action of the Pacific coast, he’s loving long walks on the hard-packed sand. I’m happy that Kiawah is still the understated, quiet retreat filled with nature that I remember. [View Full Entry]

For the Bucknellian, the days between finals and graduation are classically spent on Hilton Head Island. I've heard vicious rumors that there is a movement to stop this by refusing to rent to college students, however this year the movement has once again experienced failure. 19 Jacana, the aptly named 'Scag House', as it was more fondly known was my home for the week between finals and graduation. A house originally suited to a maximum of 12 people (including 2 to a bed and pull out couches) was 'converted' into a 19 person flop house. we added a few, lost a [View Full Entry]
