happy hour with Jim

Well it is december now, we have been at the bucksport marina in south carolina for almost a week waiting for motor parts after she bit the bullet. Things weren't good as the part is no longer available but we found a used one. it's just 40 miles away but we are on top of it. this is a short entry as the cpu is about to die. Anxious to get moving again as the rain finally stopped, 4 days later. Still it's better than snow... [View Full Entry]

low tide on the ICW
low tide on the ICW
we try to time our runs to coincide with the currents but sometimes come across 5 or 6 changes a day
Tides and currents have become of daily interest. In Albermarle Sound there is no tide and the only current is wind driven. Here in Beaufort the tidal range is 8 - 10 feet and the current can run at 4 knots. we entered one river doing 2mph and left it doing 9! We have made good progress in the past 2 weeks and have racked up a few needed "gold star"days (spent no money.) [View Full Entry]

we have had too many frosty starts to the day - fashion is not a concern
Probably the best part of the adventure so far has been meeting really good cruising people. There is a real sense of support and encouragement from others doing the same as us - many for the first time too! Hearing the name of a familiar boat name on the radio is a real jolt of joy that we remember from sailing with Rick & Donna to the Bahamas 3 years ago. Jim and Christine, a Brit couple on a Moody 34, Baroness, which they crossed the Atlantic in last year have become good friends. All of us seem to have ‘blown [View Full Entry]

On our way to Florida
The Trip South - 2008 We arrived at the St. Mary’s River inlet after an overnight trip from Charleston, SC. We traveled out on the Atlantic Ocean, first in a calm but later with following wind and seas, that built to 22 knots and 6-8 feet. Once in the inlet, our first stop was just off the National Seashore at Cumberland Island. This is the first Barrier Island north of the Florida state line. We had made plans to meet up with our Canadian friends, Doug & Sharon, on the Beneteau 405 “About Time”. They had stored their boat in a [View Full Entry]

“Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed immaturity. Immaturity is the inability to use one's understanding without guidance from another. This immaturity is self-imposed when its cause lies not in lack of understanding, but in lack of resolve and courage to use it without guidance from another. Sapere Aude! "Have courage to use your own understanding!"--that is the motto of enlightenment.” - Immanual Kant It is Friday November 7th and I left off in my last Blog talking about how I was totally exhausted and ready to leave Washington so I hoped in my [View Full Entry]

I gave up working at the portrait studio and I am now trying my hand at teaching history. The day to day tasks of getting students to sit still in class and study can be tedious so i was very happy to be going on a field trip where they could learn in an active enviroment. I was so excited to be going to St. Augustine Florida on a field trip. What could be better for a history teacher who also loves to travel. I had to drive which was scary. But we made all the way down and back in [View Full Entry]

Durham was a ton of fun. I just finished a thick mug of North Caroline Honey tea and bought a whole line if Burt's Bees from the factory (they're made in Durham!) The kid's mmuseum was awesome. my little and baby cousins went ga-ga over the static electricity exhibit. The trail was tiring, I felt like we were going in circles with pine cones and acorns and maple leaves aurrounding me. The view though, was ASTOUNDING. it was pretty chilly and i felt a bit light-headed at the top mof Father Mountain in Watauga County, North Carolina. I sawvast spaces of [View Full Entry]
