We started our second day, after a trip to the local Shell station for coffee, by heading to the Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. It was a fairly long trip from the motel, but well worth it. The entrance is quite a ways from the actual buildings or gardens and parking seemed somewhat limited, but we found a place. The Magnolia Plantation and Gardens seems more gardens then buildings, although we didn't opt for the manor tour, feeling the gardens were large enough to be fulfilling. There were so many different flowers and trees, along with a number of "collection" sections, like camilia, azalea, etc. We spent almost 2 hours just walking along the paths and taking photos. A portion of the gardens border either the Ashley River or the plantation's Big Cypress Lake, adding to the ... read more

Back in early "COVID Days", my wife and I had planned on celebrating our 47th wedding anniversary by flying to Spain and walking the Camino de Santiago together, sometime in May of 2021. Well, May 2021 arrived and COVID is still here, so we had to make different plans. My wife decided she would love to spend some time in Charleston, South Carolina, so we started making plans. Originally we had planned on spending the 18th thru the the 20th of May there, but the start of my Golden Seniors summer bowling league was the 20th, and my wife didn't like the idea of rushing home on the 20th, so we changed the dates to the 17th thru the 19th. I made a reservation at the Charleston Grand Hotel, then noticed how many bad reviews they ... read more

In May of 2018, I decided to try a 3-day hike on the Palmetto Trail here in South Carolina. If you haven't read that account, here is a brief synopsis. On May 24th, I started what was intended to be a 3-day, 2-night, hike along the Palmetto Trail, starting in the small town of Walhalla. All went well the 1st day, walking from Walhalla to Oconee State Park, where I spent the night in a tent. The next day, I started the 2nd segment, from Oconeee State Park to Keowee-Toxaway State Park. Although I got up and going at a reasonable hour, feeling pretty good, the directions provided by the Park Rangers left something to be desired. For over an hour I couldn't find the trailhead, then it started raining and I had to wait it ... read more

In the fall of 1944 the Allied military command decided they need to take Aachen, the westernmost city in Germany, prior to an advance into the industrial Ruhr Basin. Aachen was an ancient city, heart of Charlemagne's empire, and for 6 centuries the place of coronation of the kings of the Holy Roman Empire. A young lieutenant from Orangeburg SC was a member of an American division attached to the British Second Army, and his battalion had been ordered to take Prummern, a small village with a strategic hilltop location. Like many young men with some ROTC training, he had been pulled out of college early and hastily trained for war. The night they arrived in Prummern, he was hiding in a cellar and thought he was going to be discovered by a German officer, and ... read more

Think critically for oneself and make informed decisions that best suit one’s life? Or listen to your betters and do what you’re told. Remain terrified! Question nothing! Stay home! Nah, that never sounded like me. I think for myself and try to do things that scare me or at least give me a thrill from time to time. Take calculate risks and test boundaries. My mom is the same way. So tomorrow we set off again on another adventure. A three-week round-trip journey to the Everglades at the tip of Florida. We are driving the length of our country in a car I only first drove today. We are retreating from a brutal few weeks of snow and refusing to be coerced into staying put. Life is short. Travel years are fleeting. Alone together is not ... read more

Until I visited Columbia, I had no idea why South Carolina is called the Palmetto State. But it’s easy to understand the significance of that nickname while taking a stroll along any of the streets in the downtown area or on the campus of the University of South Carolina. Those palmetto trees are simply everywhere. And they add so much charm to the capital city. I wasn’t quite prepared for that charm, especially since I’ve been conditioned to hate the whole town for the past 2 decades. If any of my readers know me in real life, they doubtless realize that I have visited Columbia several times before this year of pandemic. But what the pandemic has afforded me is new perspectives, as well as emptier streets and campuses to enjoy in quiet contemplation. For the ... read more

Happy Thanksgiving to all!! This is a story I wrote about 5-6 years ago. The pecan Santa hangs in a place of honor on my tree. The Back-of-the-Tree Ornament The old man sat in the old overstuffed chair, sipping his apple cider with brandy, and listening to Jingle Bell Rock playing softly in the background. As he had always done, he had put up his Christmas tree, set out a few of the Dickens village buildings and figurines, and set up the crockpot with apple cider and mulling spices. It was harder now. Since his wife had died, it had taken more energy every year to put up the display she had so loved. But still he set the little skaters on the mirror with the magnets so they appeared to skate over a frozen pond. ... read more

Yes, the time has come to bid our family adieu, take our packed bags and leave their warm and comforting homes for our good, old, stand-by RV. We knew this day was coming but once it arrived, it seemed too soon and too sad. Goodbyes are never easy....much too sorrowful.....so we stick with “so long until we meet again.” We are so grateful to our children for putting us up and putting up with us this summer. We had a great time. It was such a joy being with all our children and grandchildren at one time or another. We can’t thank them all enough for all the good times we shared and the cherished memories we made. We love our family. Our last family gathering was called our Texas Hot party. Most everyone gathered together ... read more

Perfect beach weather in Myrtle Beach today; sunny, warm and a steady breeze. Walked the boardwalk this morning, saw a few homeless people sleeping on benches, and distant fog hanging along the northern shore. Found a Dunkin Donut about a half mile away, but had to settle for an apple fritter since they didn't make breakfast sandwiches. Tomorrow I will find a real one and not succumb to that temptation again. Chilled this morning and read my book on the beach, walked in the water along the shore and watched the families as they arrived for a day of fun. Happy Father's Day to all you fathers out there. Myrtle Beach has a long history with pavilions built in 1902 and amusement parks built on 11 acres in the 1930's. They danced the state dance "The ... read more

Said good bye to Kyle and Rebecca in Savannah this morning and enjoyed an easy (but slow) ride up 95. Love traveling when I'm not in a hurry, it is much more enjoyable. My condo, directly on the beach was ready when I arrived. I'm on the 19th floor and boy - what a view! What an awesome beach day, sunny and and strong breeze. I love the ocean, the strength, the raw, natural power - it is in command and one must bow to it's majesty and respect it. Myrtle Beach is definitely a party spot. Everyone here is respectful and doing their social distancing. Had dinner at RipTydz and loved the atmosphere and the great, happy vibe of kids, couples and families enjoying their freedom after the lock down. 2020 has been such ... read more
