Das ... read more
Road Trip of New England, Quebec City and Montreal
Published: November 19th 2011North America » United States » Rhode Island » NewportWe covered a lot of highway on our road trip through New England and Quebec including the cities of Newport, RI; Hyanis, MA; Boston, MA; Salem, MA; Portland, ME, Quebec City, QC, Montreal, QC; and Southington, CT. Day 1 - We picked up our rental car from JFK Airport and headed out of Long Island, up the New York state coastline. We stopped at Rye, NY, for a snack lunch and visited the local beach and park. Our next stop was the Mystic Seaport, CT, where we viewed the tall mast sailing ship and other nautical memorabilia. The driving portion of driving trips always takes longer than planned (but less than what Google Maps tells you). We arrived in Newport, RI at about 5pm with just enough daylight to really enjoy the Cliff Walk trail along ... read more
10:30am Six of us set out to Avis Rental and embark on a Jeep. The GPS takes its own sweet time to figure out our co-ordinates so we navigate Manhattan a bit more than required. It’s tight on the back seat with four people, but not an inconvenience because I love road trips AND the people sitting next to me. 12:30pm US freeways don’t offer many options except for fast food so we stop at McDonalds for lunch. We like the food but swear not to eat another meal at McDonalds for a while. 2:00pm The DJ in the front seat is doing a great job juggling two I phones and an iPod to cater to the varied taste in music. We listen to Usher, Bollywood, Frank Sinatra and old Bengali tunes. The rain doesn’t stop ... read more
Maine to Newport: Volpaia on the water again!
Published: June 26th 2010North America » United States » Rhode Island » NewportAttempt #1 to sail to Newport, Rhode Island: Predicted 15 knot winds are gusting above 40 knots instead... seas whip up and our trusty crew (including myself) are FREEZING! My brother-in-law, David, finds himself experiencing an uncomfortable time at sea... in full fowl weather gear, hats, gloves, boots and harnesses, we initiate him into the wild world of full weather in your face sort of sailing. Our other crew are Bruce (who sailed with us last year for several months and knows the boat well), Kelly (married to Cyrus' cousin Chris and has been sailing her whole life) and her father, Rich (Kelly's dad, who has a boat in Maine and also has years of sailing experience). David represents the South and amazes us with stories of bass fishing and duck hunting. Kelly is quiet and ... read more
My husband and I took a day trip to Newport, Rhode Island, which is about 2 hours from our home. We went to view one of the most popular mansions by one of the world's most families, the Vanderbilts. Their mansion is called The Breakers, due to the water breaking on the rocks in their backyard. I'm so amazed at how people can live in a "summer cottage" like the one we saw. It's Beautiful with a capital b. Even the children had their own house to play in. It's the size of a small one family house and they got to play in there. Everywhere you look, you see golden inlay this and golden inley that along with dolphins and acorns. I've been there before, but not a Christmas time. It was just decorated for ... read more
