Rhode Island has definitely become a "day-trip" destination for us as 1) it is an extremely small state and 2) it's only a couple hours from our house. Getting in the car early in the morning, driving to NEWPORT for seafood and a walk-around and being back at home by 10 has become fairly common practice in our household. During the winter Newport is a pretty bleak place. It definitely is not hopping with energy and young people as it does in the summer, but this is the perfect time to visit the million dollar mansions as they are deserted with no one around. Newport is known for the incredible mansions that were built in the twentieth century by the Vanderbilt's and co. We decided to visit THE ELMS. What an incredible place - the size ... read more

Hi Folks. Good progress is being made in our passage north. We weren't sure how to go over or under Long Island, New York without strong currents and major traffic, so we made a nice hop from Barnegat Sound, NJ straight to Block Island, Rhode Island. It was a nice smooth overnight passage, ending with the discovery of another charming well-developed tourist spot and boater's haven on Block Island. I'm not sure how I have lived this long without knowing about this place. I was also surprised to anchor next to a boat, Palawan, that I first saw this boat or it's namesake in Kennebunkport in the 70's. At that time Palawan was a handsome aluminum boat that was said to belong to the president of IBM. Years later I met a captain in Port Credit ... read more

Good Morning all!! Hope everyone had a good weekend.... Sally and I decided last Friday to take a drive over to Newport Rhode Island for the day. It's a little over an hours drive from Norwich Connecticut. We have been here in Connecticut for almost 3 weeks now and decided that it was time to go exploring. About 5 miles out of Newport we noticed that there was quite a bit of traffic heading in the same direction as us. When we arrived in Newport we found that is was the weekend of the tall ship festival in Newport which explained all the traffic. It took us over an hour to find a parking spot. Numerous large Schooners were in port as well as quite a few luxury yachts. Newport Rhode Island is also known for ... read more

We covered a lot of highway on our road trip through New England and Quebec including the cities of Newport, RI; Hyanis, MA; Boston, MA; Salem, MA; Portland, ME, Quebec City, QC, Montreal, QC; and Southington, CT. Day 1 - We picked up our rental car from JFK Airport and headed out of Long Island, up the New York state coastline. We stopped at Rye, NY, for a snack lunch and visited the local beach and park. Our next stop was the Mystic Seaport, CT, where we viewed the tall mast sailing ship and other nautical memorabilia. The driving portion of driving trips always takes longer than planned (but less than what Google Maps tells you). We arrived in Newport, RI at about 5pm with just enough daylight to really enjoy the Cliff Walk trail along ... read more

Das ... read more

Attempt #1 to sail to Newport, Rhode Island: Predicted 15 knot winds are gusting above 40 knots instead... seas whip up and our trusty crew (including myself) are FREEZING! My brother-in-law, David, finds himself experiencing an uncomfortable time at sea... in full fowl weather gear, hats, gloves, boots and harnesses, we initiate him into the wild world of full weather in your face sort of sailing. Our other crew are Bruce (who sailed with us last year for several months and knows the boat well), Kelly (married to Cyrus' cousin Chris and has been sailing her whole life) and her father, Rich (Kelly's dad, who has a boat in Maine and also has years of sailing experience). David represents the South and amazes us with stories of bass fishing and duck hunting. Kelly is quiet and ... read more

My husband and I took a day trip to Newport, Rhode Island, which is about 2 hours from our home. We went to view one of the most popular mansions by one of the world's most families, the Vanderbilts. Their mansion is called The Breakers, due to the water breaking on the rocks in their backyard. I'm so amazed at how people can live in a "summer cottage" like the one we saw. It's Beautiful with a capital b. Even the children had their own house to play in. It's the size of a small one family house and they got to play in there. Everywhere you look, you see golden inlay this and golden inley that along with dolphins and acorns. I've been there before, but not a Christmas time. It was just decorated for ... read more
