Our condo was so nice and huge! We made our own breakfast at our leisure! The view from the deck was gorgeous. Ed got up real early hoping to take a picture of the sunrise over the water, but learned we were going to get to see the sunset….the sunrise was on the other side of our building!!!
Following breakfast we’d took off to go tour The Breakers, one of the beautiful mansions you could visit here in Newport. In the mid 1800’s wealthy southern planters seeking to beat the heat began to build their summer “cottages” along Bellevue Avenue in Newport. Several years later wealthy northerners began building larger mansions nearby. By the turn of the century many of the nations wealthiest families were spending their summers in Newport. They included the Vanderbilts, who built The Breakers. It was their summer residence and was only used two months out of the year.
We truly enjoyed our tour. We were most impressed that in a day and age where having one bathroom was considered lucky, The Breakers had twenty!! We also were impressed by the dressing rooms complete with tons of storage. At first glance we didn’t understand all
the long poles were in the closets. At one point we got a closer look and the were wooden hangers for long dresses. You’ll have to look at the picture I snapped.
I must say the people there were quite accommodating. Obviously Terry couldn’t do stairs, but there was someone on each level that took us up the elevator and made sure we got where we needed to go!
Once we returned to our condo, we got out the wheelchair so we could walk around the town. There were only a few places where it really wasn’t easy to get the wheelchair across the street but we managed quite well.
We planned on an early dinner at the Red Parrot, a local restaurant we had tried last year. Ed wanted to have the lobster scampi he’d had last year. It was so very good. We decided to share a dessert called No Way Jose!! It had vanilla ice cream, "hot" peanut butter sauce, hot fudge, Oreo cookies, whipped cream, drizzled with butterscotch and topped with Oreo cookies in a HUGE glass. It could have been a great dessert but the were very stingy with their ice cream.
Newport was tough to navigate this year because there was a big boat show. There were tons of people, lots of traffic, and no parking!! We still had a great time and got around pretty good!!
One thing I forgot to mention all around Newport was the flowers. They were beautiful. The hydrangeas were particularly pretty. I took a few good flower pictures!
We wanted to see the sunset on the bay in front of our condo and God did not disappoint!! It was beautiful!
Tomorrow was a travel day, plus we are constantly tracking Hurricane Lee as it follows us up the coast. Hopefully it won’t impact us too much!
