Todays goal was finding Jeff and Maria’s Ice Cream Shoppe. Somehow it came up on my Facebook several
Months ago. When I looked it up I found it was only 17 miles from where we were spending the night. As everyone knows, I’m always up for a new ice cream place and their hot dogs looked pretty good too!
This was simply a travel day. We couldn’t find accommodations in Newport that would last through Friday because if the boat show. We couldn’t find accommodations in Freeport that would start on Friday. So I found a place in between and we planned to explore the area.
The drive to Heff and Maria’s was great. It was like driving state roads in West Virginia….very scenic. The trouble is , it’s impossible to take pictures while driving!! This trip it different because Terry tore the ligaments in his knee and is unable to drive. I’ve been doing all the driving so I’ll be taking zero pictures from the car!!
Jeff and Maria’s opened at noon and we were the first customers of the day. When we arrived the place looked closed and we could see a note on the door
but couldn’t read it from the car. Ed got out and went to the window…IT WAS OPEN!!!!! The inside dining room was closed (not enough help) but I was willing to sit outside!! Jeff told Ed he was the only one working today but he’d let us inside since we were the only ones there.
This place was known for the Peanut Butter Wizard. It was a specialty sundae with peanut butter topping, chocolate topping, chopped Reese cups, your choice of ice cream (typically vanilla), whipped cream, and a waffle cone on top. (Refer to the picture). They has quite a variety of ice cream and frozen yogurt, but this is what I came for!
Their other specialties were fried hot dogs with toasted buns and grilled cheese. We all ordered our food and talked with Jeff as he prepared everything. He was quite interested in my ice cream travels! He shared that their ice cream came from a local dairy called Richardsons, well known locally for their ice cream!! It did not disappoint. My peanut butter wizard was outstanding. It was very large with the perfect ratio of toppings to ice cream. Some places like to skimp
on one or the other….not Jeff….this was perfect!!
We truly enjoyed ourselves at Jeff and Maria’s. It was well worth the drive!
In looking at the area, I found a an apple farm and thought we should check it out. It was called Cider Hill Farm and it did not disappoint!! It was the quintessential New England fall farm
Stand complete with a gift shop, cider mill, a bakery, fresh fruits and veggies, mums, corn shocks, just everything there is to love about fall. You could go out into the fields and pick your own apples or just bag up what they had ready!! While it was busy, it wasn’t overly crowded! We loved this stop!!
Up next was our home for the night. We’ve been hearing all along on this trip that Hurricane Lee was going to impact the coastline of New England. As I was checking into the hotel the clerk was informing all guests that they had plenty of flashlights in case of power failure, that the start of the storm was one am, and that this was a brief but fast storm. The good news was it’s just about an hour to our
next place. The bad news was check out and our drive time will be during the worst part of the storm. We may have to alter our route inland, but we shall see tomorrow!!
Since we had lunch at Jeff and Maria’s, we agreed to just chill out in our rooms and have our sandwiches for dinner. We also have apple cider, apple cider donuts, fruits and veggies that we bought at Cider Hill Farms. Every once in a while you need a relaxing day. Since Terry is nursing a bad knee this came as a welcome rest for him!! Now to just get the weather to cooperate!!
