I have been working on my oral history report. I chose my mom as the person to interview. She was born in 1921. She has lived through so many changes in the world in her lifetime. Her father was born in 1894. He had a very strong character and was an important role in forming my mother's strong character. In the process of the interview my mom recants a story of being involved in a boycott in high school that ended in a teacher being fired. She was the first in her family to graduate high school. I am glad that this class required an oral history report. I may never have taken the opportunity to learn so much from my mother's child hood. The rest of my family all want a copy of my report. ... read more

For the past 12 days my family and I were away on our annual camping trip. Each year we pilgrammage to a Christian camp to enjoy fellowship with family and friends we have known for years as well as those we meet for the first time. Many of the attendees are from Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, Washington, DC, PA (of course), and all over the United States. During our encampment, there are morning and evening church services and a host of seminars that are power packed. During the week there are about 3,000 people on the campgroup and on the weekend the amount of people is unbelievable, I'd estimate about 10,000 people attend the church service. The Governor attended the church services as well as the Mayor of Philadelphia. Pictured is the cabin we stayed in ... read more

My nephews’ wedding was this past weekend. My girls were the flower girls. My nephew had his brother's baby in the wedding too. My girls pulled the 7month old baby down the isle in a wagon. It was very cute. It was interesting to me how the triplets would react being in the wedding. They have been the center of attention since they were born. I was not sure how they would be with so many people and the baby and bride getting most of the attention. They did great and had no problem not being the center of attention. I was very happy to see how they interacted with the wedding party. I would include a picture but we do not post pictures of them on the web. ... read more

I remember learning about the holocaust in high school. I graduated from high school longer ago then I would like to admit. This week’s reading was difficult. The Account of Holocaust Mass Shooting, 1942 by: Hermann Friedrich Graebe was very hard to read. What is so different this time around is how much closer it was in years. When I was young 1942 seemed so long ago. It was another life time if you will. It is so hard to fathom that this account of part of the Holocaust was only 54 years ago. My parents were alive while this was going on. Some people who were in these horrid camps and survived are still alive today. Being older my self makes it seem so much closer then it did so many years ago. Hermann writes ... read more

I laugh everday that I pick up the paper and see the Congress has formed another committee that will use millions in tax dollars to push the personal agenda of one self-important $&%^ so they can get there overly made up face on TV. Now our elected officials attempted to push through a constitutional ammendment to ban the desicration of the American Flag. With a war in Iraq and Afganistan, market instability, record national debt, rising inflation, homelss Americans, AIDS, Cancer, etc. how do they really find the time. Our modern civilization is one of inaction and CYOA. ATTENTION ELECTED OFFICIALS.....please work on something relative.....the flag burning issue has been around for a long time I think it can wait a little longer. Perhaps you could try working on something that will better the lives of ... read more

About this same time each year, my family and I go on a ten day camping trip. We started going camping when our children were very young. We stay in a log cabin and enjoy the beauty of nature. I don't have any pics of our previous trips for your viewing pleasure as I did not have my digital camera at the time and I have no idea how to work my scanner. This year I plan to take lots of pictures and will add a few photos on my travelblog when I get back from my trip.... read more

This has been a crazy last 2 weeks. My one daughter became ill and had a low grade fever. My mother n law picker her up at daycare. She called my husband after a few hours to tell him she had a 104 degree fever. My husband called me at work and we both left work to take her to the doctors right away. One hour later we were at the doctors and her fever went to 105.6 degrees. The doctor said he thought it was a virus and not to worry about how high the number was. Too late we were already worried. She has epilepsy and can have seizures with high fevers. He checked her for an ear infection and sent us home. He thought it might be a sinus infection and prescribed an ... read more

Today, my girls graduated from Kindergarten. It was very inspiring. They sang many songs. The one song they sang went like this" We're building a better world loving one person at a time. We're building a better world with peace. We're building a better world with friends. The world goes round and round." How do we go from kindergarten to college and lose all hope of building a better world?... read more

My mother’s family lived on a farm. They had 7 boys and 2 girls. The oldest son had just turned 16 years old and went to work in the mines. My grandfather did not want his sons working in the mines. He left the farm and went to work in Philadelphia. After a few months he came back home and took the oldest son with him. My grandmother wanted her son back and my father said you have to come and get him. That was the only way he could get my grand mother to leave the farm. That was when my mother’s family moved to Philadelphia. My father passed away quite a few years ago. I wish I had taken this class while he was still alive. I would have loved to interview my father ... read more

I had trouble figuring out how all this works, but starting to make progress. Joined into a meeting of about 10 folks from the surrounding areas (Havertown, Ardmore, Bryn Mawr, and Bala Cynwyd; just outside Philly). It's interesting how people give and receive information. Someone makes a statement that is not clear to me (and others), but sees no problems with the communication himself. How do you get through the day? Is normal for the region or is it just me? My mom is of Pennsylvania Dutch heritage. She frequently speaks in partial sentences. I've been dealing with her for years so I get it. Makes me more aware of how I may be perceived to other. Maybe I need to slow down a bit.... read more
