Posted by: Onaxthiel- Carson City, Nevada is much smaller than the city just up the highway from it, Reno, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have it's fair share of gambling. As the state capital, it wouldn't be able to retain the respect of any of the larger NV localities if they didn't have at least a few slot machines. To make sure that everyone knows they are there, the state has conveniently located all the bars and casinos on the main drag, within a block of the statehouse, and right across from the old governors mansion. Looking for the statehouse, we were privileged to see a few of these establishments: The Nugget casino, with the loosest lots in town! Dopplegangers, featuring Hollywood knockout oil wrestling! Hot! Hot! Hot! We figured that the Nugget would be ... read more
Nevada State Seal. Seems appropriate for a state where about 90% of the land is federally owned.

Believe it or not, birding can be a sport. As an activity where there are winners and there are losers and there are stats, birding is indeed a sport. Allow me to elaborate: In the world of birds, there occurs a phenomenon where, on occasion, a particular bird will have some wires crossed (just as humans do), and they get a little lost in life. Instead of returning to their wintering grounds or sticking with their conspecifics en route to their breeding grounds, they find themselves on vacation hundreds of miles from where they belong. On occasion, birdwatchers run across these "vagrants," as they're called, and report to fellow birders of their serendipitous find. When it comes to rarities, word travels fast throughout the birding community, as it means "tickers," or "listers," have the opportunity to ... read more

Please remember and be reasssured: You do not have to be or become an animal rights' fanatic to learn and care about animals living in captivity: So saying that, before I leave on this "journey for the animals" I plan on visiting the Oregon Zoo in Portland (which I did on January 3rd, 2008- see photos for comments). In the process of my research on animals living in captivity, it is important for me to share what is going on at the many zoos and circuses around the world, including in the United States. If we choose to visit places like these that keep animals in captivity, I would encourage us to do so with open eyes. Truly look at the animals you are visiting. In the silence of your heart, try to feel and understand ... read more

I have done it again, and left it too late to update the blog. I didn’t keep a diary, and dates and a lot of details have escaped through the sieve of my mind. So, I am bunching the rest of our Oregon holiday into this one entry. Three Capes Loop: Cape Mears State Park, Cape Lookout State Park, Cape Kiwanda State Park When we woke up in Pacific City, we went back to the Pelican pub brewery where we had dinner and were blown away with the views that were just a curtain of black when we had had dinner. The brew pub is right on the beach front, and what an amazing beach. Unfortunately they let 4 wheel drives on this one to. I get quite upset about this. Beaches should be left alone. ... read more

Hi everyone! Justin and I are counting the days until we get on that plane and go on our first very big adventure. We've always loved to travel since we met and Thailand has been a dream of ours. Well, to celebrate our third year of marriage together (that's right ladies, I made my husband promise to take me on a honeymoon every year!), we decided to take the jump and make that dream come true. I've spent months, weeks, days planning our trip to the last detail. We are flying with Korean airline which will be a first. I tried calling them to book good seats but if you don't speak Korean, good luck with that!I'm a little nervous but that airline has really good reviews so we should be ok. We are dividing our two ... read more

I love arriving at new places in the dark and discovering them in the morning. We did not have high expectations of seaside, as it was merely the first place we came to and we needed to stop driving. But it was a really cute low-key seaside village. Maybe the main street was slightly prettied up for the tourists, but if so, it was done sensitively enough. No Shopping mall ugliness or gold coast style high rise development. Just little coastal shacks and old bagged brick hotels whose peeling walls had seen years of salt and rain and wind. We woke up and walked to the beach. It was sooooo good to see waves again for the first time since Hawaii. You wouldn’t want to be going swimming without a full winter weight wet suit, booties ... read more

We said goodbye to Jane, Paul, Aislinn and Attikus in style at the Columbia River Gorge . This was pretty cool, as we had seen the source of the river - The Columbia ice fields (in the Rockies) - with Marilyn and Richard, and we would see it enter the ocean in Astoria, where we were headed. After goodbyes and coffee, Jono and I hit the road to the coast. As soon as we were out of the city we noticed a growing accumulation of snow on either side of the road, and in no time at all we were driving (very slowly) over a snow and ice covered road. We were totally unprepared for this - we didn’t realise the passes between Portland and the Coast were high enough to gather so much snow, and ... read more

It snowed. Not a white christmas because it was too warm to settle, but it was lovely anyway. I'm experiencing a few days of winter up here before I go back south, so I'm not complaining at all, even if I am struggling to keep warm. In fact yesterday involved huge amounts of food and drink, and the food was excellent thanks to my friend Carl, an avid student of the Nigel Slater school of comfort food cooking. It was also good to go out and walk round while the shops were all closed. Arriving back from Cuba, America's commercialism was thrown into sharp focus, with a barrage of adverts and shops as far as the eye can see full of people making last ditch attempts to buy crap for their families. It's an interesting contrast. ... read more
