After a day and a half in San Francisco, I picked up my brother, Craig from the San Francisco airport so that he could join me in a week of my road trip and then fly out of Salt Lake City seven days later. We spent two days driving up the California coast and stopped and hiked in the Redwoods, amazing. We then spent two nights camping on the southern coast edge of Oregon where we hiked on the rocks, got caught in fast moving sand and watched sea otters at play. (If there is a next life, I want to be a river otter.) From the coast we drove to Crater Lake and then on to Bend. If you ever go to Crater Lake when there is still snow, don’t believe the people in the ... read more

This entry covers our trip from Fort Bidwell, CA to Valley of the Rogue, OR, where we spent three days, and the five days we stayed in Coos Bay, on the south Oregon coast. Our last night in Fort Bidwell saw snow and wind. We had planned to take a shortcut over Fandango Pass, but decided given the snow, that we had better take a longer, but less elevated route to our next stop at Valley of the Rogue (named for the wild and scenic Rogue River), in southwest Oregon. Although it snowed on the higher passes, the road remained dry and safe and we arrived mid-afternoon at the Valley of the Rogue State Park and settled in for a three day stay. On 9 April, we left Valley of the Rogue and traveled north on ... read more

So I'm at Kells in downtown Portland on Friday night. I sit down to talk to these girls. We get to talking about where we are from (nobody in Portland is from Portland... sort of like Atlanta in that aspect) anyway the one girl says she is from Atlanta now but Indiana actually. (interesting) For some reason I respond with “Go Hoosiers.” To which I find out that she is a Boilermaker fan. She continues to tell me that she went to “Rose.” I find it interesting that she just says “Rose.” I find myself saying the full name most of the time because nobody knows the school so it makes more sense. Anyway I just smiled at her and sang the fight song... just pure randomness. So yes, I'm now living in Portland, OR. I ... read more

We've spent two days packing and are almost ready. The kids will be taking us to the airport after Church today. They've never been alone this long (3 weeks) without us and we've never been alone this long without them. We all are looking forward to it but I'm sure we will miss each other.......eventually :-) ... read more

Alturas, California makes a great staging point for a run up the middle of Oregon. A clear night produced morning temps of 24F at 0600. I enjoyed my morning coffee and yogurt watching Moto GP Free Practice 2 from Estoril, Portugal. By 0900 temps had risen to 38F, sunshine, and it was time to hit the road. Gassing up in town before departure, I noticed coolant leaking from my bike. I was about to head out across 150 miles of southern Oregon's Great Basin Desert, so it was time for some investigation. In a small town like Alturas, the guys at NAPA will actually let you borrow a couple tools. Soon several body panels were removed from the ST1300, but the source of the leak was not found. After the bike was warmed up there was ... read more

So if you're reading this, you already know that I'm going to Hawaii. How cool is that?! I'll be in Oahu for the duration (which, after much research, I've confirmed is not the Big Island ). Home will be a three bedroom house right on the beach with a fully equipped kitchen and high-speed internet access (food, shelter, and high-speed, the necessities of life!) The house is on url=http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fmaps.google.com%2Fmaps%3Fhl%3Den%26q%3DEwa%2BBeach%2C%2BHI%2C%2BUSA%26um%3D1%26ie%3DUTF-8%26sa%3DX%26oi%3Dgeocode_result%26resnum%3D1%26ct%3Dtitle&ei=MZb1R7n8N6jmpgSM-8m_DQ&usg=AFQjCNHZJwzckGF4UQsUHIcnYkxCW-y7jw&sig2=kvaPk1y40gnTr8nB7xmgSA Ewa Beach in southern Oahu. Our original ambitious plan was to head down the Oregon coast to San Fran, head east into the Yosemite national park, then travel north back to Vancouver via the interior. We had planned well ahead to camp, and had purchased all the right wet weather gear. We were prepared for bad weather. Needless to say, I was so excited to go on this trip. I really wanted to be close to nature again, away from big cities, public transport, people, time. So we set off early on the Tuesday morning in the rental car. The drive down to Oregon is long and boring. And once we passed the US - Canadian border, it was just straight, on the I5 all the way to Oregon. US highways are good well marked roads with plenty of rest stops. ... read more

PUPPY KOKO'OLUA We're so excited! Spring is almost here, bringing with it change, growth and rebirth. But for Erin and I, spring brings with it something new this year....a puppy. In particular, and 8-week old puppy named Koko'olua (meaning 'companion' in Hawaiian). Lua or lu-lu for short. Here are some pictures of her. She is a Mini Tri-Colored Australian Shepherd. And she is a bundle of uber-cute love. She's a licker, a cuddler, and a non-barker. Everything is great so far and we're excited about the present and future with our new human-canine family. Hope everyone is healthy and happy. Write soon and come and visit us if you can. We'll do the same. Matthew and Erin... read more
